On the occasion of Guru Purnima on July 29, filmmaker Karan Johar thanked the two biggest gurus of his life, Aditya Chopra and Shahrukh Khan. Karan told in an emotional post how both of them played the biggest role in turning his dreams into reality. He said that Aditya Chopra inspired him to pursue a career in films, while Shahrukh Khan expressed confidence in him when he had not even directed his first film.

Filmmaker Karan Johar shared a collage of pictures with Shahrukh Khan and Aditya Chopra on his Instagram. In the post, he recalled his first meeting with Aditya Chopra and said that when he was preparing to go for further studies, Aditya gave him a chance to become an assistant director in ‘Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge’.

Karan Johar wrote in his post, ‘Two conversations completely changed my life. My first conversation was with Aditya Chopra at 1 am in the night, when he offered me to become his assistant in ‘Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge’. At that time I was going abroad for further studies. He told me that I should become a director. If I did not choose this path, it would be my biggest mistake.

Karan further said, ‘I could not sleep that night. The next morning I went to my father and asked him for a year of my life, so that I could work on the film sets. Papa asked me, ‘Do you know how to work on the set?’ I clearly said, ‘No.’ Then he asked, ‘Will you work hard and obey everything?’ I said yes. Then he said, ‘With this you can become a good producer, but to become a director the only thing you need is passion.’ At that time, perhaps Aditya Chopra was the only one who had full faith in me and my passion.

Said this for Shahrukh Khan
Remembering Shahrukh Khan, Karan Johar wrote, ‘We were in Switzerland. I was looking at the mountains and pretending to be homesick. Then Shahrukh came to me and said, ‘You will become a director and I will do your first film.’ I thought maybe he was saying this because of low oxygen, but he was completely serious. After returning to India, he also talked to my father about this. Even my father did not believe it at first, but Shahrukh stuck to his decision.

‘I love you both very much’
Karan further wrote, ‘Till date I don’t understand why he trusted me so much, just like Aditya Chopra did. Aditya and brother (Shah Rukh), I love you both very much. You both have the biggest contribution in my every success, every shortcoming, every victory and every defeat. Whatever stories I am able to tell today is possible only because of both of you.
