Kerala High Court: The Kerala High Court has reprimanded Bharat Mata as a religious symbol. The High Court asked the Registrar of Kerala University on Shukrawar (July 4, 2025), how can Bharat Mata be a religious symbol and how can a law and order problem arise by putting a picture of her? The registrar was recently suspended.

Justice N. Nagresh asked Registrar KS Anil Kumar during the hearing of his petition challenging the suspension. Vice Chancellor of Kerala University, Dr. Mohan Kunnumal, on July 2, suspended Anil Kumar for issuing notice of cancellation of a private program.

Rejecting the interim petition to stop the suspension of Registrar Anil Kumar, the court asked the petitioner how Bharat Mata is a religious symbol? What was the problem of law and order in Kerala will arise due to displaying this?

The petitioner told the High Court that there was a clash between the CPI -M and BJP student branches, Students Federation of India (SFI) and Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) over the performance of the picture.

‘Should this have been worked in this way even when the Governor’s arrival?’
Anil Kumar said that the university’s security officer told him that a religious symbol was displayed in the Senate Hall and in such a situation the program could be canceled. Also claimed that the Vice Chancellor can suspend the registrar only in emergency situations.

The High Court said that VCs can pass the order when the syndicate session is not in the session and the Senate will have to approve the suspension order. Also asked whether this should have been worked in this way even when the Governor came to the program?
