America has implemented a 50 percent tariff on India. This decision has been taken by President Donald Trump under the Executive Order 14329 of 6 August 2025. According to the order, the already existing tariffs on imported goods from India were increased by an additional 25 per cent, due to which the total duty has increased to 50 per cent. The US administration decided to impose an additional 25 per cent tariff because India buys oil from Russia.

According to the ANI report, US National Economic Council Director Kevin Haset has given a big statement on the matter. He said that India is adopting a stubborn attitude in opening its market for American products. This relationship is complex. A part of it is associated with putting pressure on Russia so that there can be peace agreement in the Ukraine conflict. He said that trade talk with India is like a marathon. There will be ups and downs in it. Haset indicated that if India maintains its stance, President Donald Trump can take strict steps.

Russia-Ukraine War related aspect
The US has directly linked the decision to impose an extra 25 per cent tariff to the Russia-Ukraine war. The US wants India to put pressure on Russia and reduce oil imports, but India is continuing oil imports from Russia for its energy security and affordable supply. Due to this, commercial and diplomatic tension between America and India is increasing.

Stress in Indo-US relations
Although the strategic partnership remains between the two countries, the differences over trade and energy policy are seen deepening. The US wants India to open markets for American products. However, India’s attitude is clear that it will give priority to domestic industry and energy security first. Regarding this, PM Modi has also given a statement that he will keep the farmers of the country first. Meanwhile, it is feared that this dispute may also affect FTA (Free Trade Agreement) and Indo-Pacific cooperation in the coming months.

90 days ban on increase in tariff

The global stock markets on Thursday saw a dramatic rise in the global stock markets after US President Donald Trump announced a 90 -day ban on a huge increase in tariffs. However, China was excluded from this ban. The move raged in investors in Asia and Europe, while there was uncertainty on the situation of Beijing.

What did WTO say on tariff war?

The World Trade Organization (WTO) has feared a serious damage to the global economic scenario between the growing trade tension between the US and China. WTO Director General Nagoji Okonzo-Ewela said that the negative comprehensive economic impact of this global trade uncertainty will not be limited to the US and China only but will also see their impact to other economies, especially the least developed countries. The trade between the US and China in the world trade is about three percent. This shows that any kind of stress in the trade relations between the two countries can cause major losses for global trade.

In the last few days, two top economies of the world are continuously levying each other, due to which the trade war is deepening. While the US has announced a fee of 125 percent on China, China has said to impose 84 percent fee on it.
