Recalling the contribution of Khaleda Zia, Prime Minister Modi said that as the first woman Prime Minister of Bangladesh, she played an important role in the development of the country as well as in strengthening India-Bangladesh relations.

PM Modi further said, as the first woman Prime Minister of Bangladesh, her important contribution to the development of Bangladesh as well as India-Bangladesh relations will always be remembered. I fondly remember my meeting with him in Dhaka in 2015. We hope that his vision and legacy will continue to guide our partnership in the future. may his soul rest in peace.

BNP issued statement

According to the statement issued by Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), Khaleda Zia died at Evercare Hospital in Dhaka at around 6 am. He was undergoing treatment in this hospital for more than a month. Party leaders and supporters expressed deep grief over his death and remembered him as a major political figure who played an important role in the modern political history of Bangladesh. The party said, we pray for the peace of his soul and request everyone to pray for his soul.

Was struggling with many diseases

Khaleda Zia was admitted to a private hospital on November 23 after serious heart and lung problems. According to Bangladeshi media reports, she was also suffering from pneumonia in her last weeks. She remained under medical observation for 36 days and her condition was said to be critical. In the last few years, the former Prime Minister was suffering from many chronic diseases, which included liver cirrhosis, diabetes, arthritis and chronic problems related to kidney, lungs, heart and eyes.

His treatment was overseen by a multidisciplinary medical team, which included experts from Bangladesh as well as doctors from the United Kingdom, the United States, China and Australia. This month there was discussion about sending him abroad for better medical care. However, those plans were ultimately shelved after doctors’ advice, as doctors said his physical condition was too weak for international travel.

• Heart problem: Khaleda Zia had a blockage in her heart. First stents were placed and later a pacemaker was also installed. Doctors told that the heart problem was quite old.
• Kidney failure: In the last days of her life, Khaleda Zia’s kidneys were badly affected. In such a situation, he had to undergo dialysis daily. Doctors told that when dialysis was stopped, his condition deteriorated.
• Lung infection and shortness of breath: In November 2025, Khaleda Zia suddenly had difficulty in breathing, cough and fever. During examination, pneumonia was found in the lungs. After this he was put on ventilator.
• Arthritis: Khaleda Zia was also suffering from joint pain and other age-related problems like eye problems, weakness and body pain.

The condition worsened in November

Let us tell you that Khaleda Zia suddenly fell very ill on 23 November 2025. Due to shortness of breath, fever and weakness, he was immediately admitted to Evercare Hospital. Initially he was kept in CCU, but when his condition deteriorated he was shifted to ICU.

Khaleda Zia’s personal doctor Professor Dr. AZM Zahid Hussain had said on 27-28 December that she was going through a critical moment. Many of his organs are not working together. Doctors say that due to old age and so many diseases, it became difficult to treat everyone at once.
