As soon as the kidneys affect the fluid balance or blood vessels, changes are immediately visible in the eyes. As kidney problems increase, vision, eye moisture, eye nerves and even the ability to recognize colors can be affected. Sudden blurring of vision or double vision can be a sign of damage to the small nerves of the retina. High BP and diabetes, the two biggest causes of kidney failure, also damage the nerves of the retina. Fluid accumulation, swelling of the retina, or in severe cases, vision loss may also occur.
