Delhi’s VMMC and Safdarjung Hospital on 19 November 2025 added a new chapter to kidney transplant services by performing successful kidney transplant of a child for the first time. This achievement is not only a proud moment for the hospital, but is also the first pediatric kidney transplant conducted in any central government hospital in the country.

11 year old child got new life

An 11-year-old child from Sultanpur, UP was suffering from a rare condition like ‘Bilateral Hypodysplastic Kidney’ for about one and a half years. The child, who was brought to Safdarjung Hospital in critical condition, even suffered cardiac arrest during treatment and investigation revealed that both his kidneys had completely failed. Since then he was dependent on regular dialysis.

Mother became a life giver, complex surgery was successful

According to experts, kidney transplant in children is always considered difficult. Fitting an adult kidney into a small body and connecting it to delicate blood vessels is a very complex process. The child’s mother donated a kidney and after the surgery the kidney started functioning immediately. Doctors say that the child is now completely free from the need of dialysis and is recovering rapidly.

Hospital becomes support amid financial crisis

The child’s father runs the family as a laborer and the expenditure of lakhs of rupees in a private hospital was impossible for him. The hospital administration not only took over the transplant process but also announced that it would bear the cost of the expensive medicines required thereafter.

Team of expert doctors together created history

Hospital Director Dr. Sandeep Bansal said that this achievement is the result of years of hard work and dedication of the medical team. He described this as a step to strengthen the capacity and confidence of government health services in the country. This surgery was led by Professor, Chief Director of the Department of Urology and Renal Transplant. Dr. Pawan Vasudeva did it. Along with him Prof. Dr. Neeraj Kumar was also included in the surgical team. The pediatric team was led by Dr. Shobha Sharma, along with Dr. Srinivasvaradhan and Head of the Department, Dr. Pradeep K. Debta stay connected. The anesthesia team was headed by Dr. Sushil, whose team included Dr. Mamta and Dr. Sonali.

Kidney Transplant Health: Rohani Acharya, daughter of former Bihar CM Lalu Prasad, is in the headlines at the moment. There was discord among the family after RJD’s crushing defeat in Bihar Assembly. Along with breaking ties with his family, he has announced to leave politics. Lalu Prasad Yadav’s daughter Rohini Acharya had donated one of her kidneys in 2022 to save her father’s life. Let us tell you how much lifespan increases by donating a kidney.

How much does age increase?

The biggest question in the minds of those who undergo kidney transplant is that how many years can a person live after the operation. It is not easy to give a direct answer to this, because it depends on many things, how well the kidney is matched, what are the previous diseases of the patient and how the body accepts the new kidney.

According to Praram9 Hospital, if the kidney comes from a close relative and the tissue match is good, then the chances of it functioning well for a long time are much higher. In such cases, there is more hope that the patient’s age will increase and the quality of life will improve. At the same time, if the kidney comes from a non-relative or a deceased donor, the success rate may be slightly lower, but the results are still considered quite good.

Life increased after kidney transplant

2017 figures from the Thai Transplantation Society show that 78.2 percent of kidney transplant patients survived for at least 10 years. This means that out of every 100 people, 78 patients lived more than a decade after transplant. This clearly shows the success of kidney transplant. However, longevity does not depend on surgery alone. After transplant, how faithfully the patient takes medicines, takes care of his health and follows the doctor’s advice, the long-term success largely depends on this.

How to take care of yourself after kidney transplant?

Care after kidney transplant is very important, because it depends on how soon the patient will be able to return to his normal life and how long the new kidney will function well. There are some things which are very important to make a daily habit.

proper use of medicines

To prevent the body from rejecting the new kidney after transplant, immunosuppressant medicines have to be taken. These medicines slightly weaken the body’s immunity, due to which the risk of infection increases. Therefore, it is very important to avoid contact with sick people, stay away from crowds and take medicines on time.

Regular checkups and doctor follow-up

It is mandatory to attend every appointment fixed by the doctor. If you experience high fever, feeling like cold, change in urination, pain or swelling at the stitched area, pus-like discharge from the wound, difficulty in breathing, diarrhea, or any kind of strange pain around the new kidney, then you should immediately consult a doctor. Such symptoms can be early warnings.

Kidney Transplant Information: Kidney transplant is a very risky task, but it saves people’s lives. When a person’s kidneys stop functioning properly and the body does not get proper relief even with the help of dialysis, then doctors recommend kidney transplant. In such a situation, this question definitely arises in the mind that the new kidney gets implanted in the body, but what happens to the old, bad kidney of the patient? This is the question that makes people think the most. Let us tell you what happens to an old kidney.

What happens to old kidneys?

According to Nyulangone’s report, in most cases doctors leave the old kidneys inside the body. Actually, even if a bad kidney is not functioning properly, it does not harm the body. In such a situation, there is no need to remove it during surgery. In medical language it is called “non-functional kidney”, which can exist inside the body without any problem. Apart from this, it becomes smaller with time. People often think that the old kidney would be removed and a new kidney would be implanted in the same place. Whereas the reality is the opposite. The doctor places the new kidney in the lower part of the stomach i.e. lower abdomen. Here connection to blood supply and bladder can be done easily. This means that most patients have three kidneys after transplant, two old and one new.

When is the kidney removed?

However, in some cases the kidney may be removed, such as if there is persistent infection in the old kidney. Apart from this, if the kidney has become very large and is causing swelling or pain in the stomach. If any disease is found in the kidneys, such as cancer, they are removed. In such cases, doctors remove the old kidney before or along with the transplant. However, even if the old kidney remains intact, the new kidney takes over the entire work such as filtering the blood, making urine and removing toxins from the body. Even if the old kidney remains in its place, it has no role left in our life.

There is good news for millions of people suffering from kidney disease. Scientists from Canada and China have together created a ‘universal kidney’, which can work for patients of every blood group. This means that now the hassle of finding a donor for kidney transplant can end. This discovery will not only reduce the waiting list, but will also save millions of lives. Let us know what is Universal Kidney and how was it discovered?

This problem occurs most in kidney transplant.

In the world of kidney transplant, the biggest difficulty lies in matching blood groups. If the blood group of the donor and the patient is not the same then the body does not accept the kidney. Suppose someone’s blood group is A and if he is given a B type kidney, then the body rejects it considering it as ‘foreign’. To avoid this rejection, many medicines are given to the patient. These medicines are very expensive and many times they are not able to save life.

This blood group is universal donor

Let us tell you that O type blood group is called ‘universal donor’, because the kidney of this group can be given to a patient with any blood group A, B, AB or O. However, the problem is that O type kidneys are very rare. Its demand is so high that in America about 11 people die every day due to not getting a kidney. Even in India, lakhs of patients are spending their lives on dialysis because a suitable donor is not available for them. Apart from this, the waiting list is so long that many patients leave the world while waiting.

How was the universal kidney prepared?

Now scientists have found the solution to this problem. After 10 years of hard work, biochemist Stephen Withers of the University of British Columbia, Canada, and his team have created a kidney that will be suitable for patients of every blood group. It has been named ‘universal kidney’. This kidney works like O type, that is, it can be transplanted into the body of a patient with any blood group.

How was this kidney made?

Now the question arises that how was this kidney made? Actually, there are some special sugar molecules (antigens) on the surface of the kidneys of blood group A, B or AB. These antigens tell the body whether the kidney is its own or foreign. These antigens are not present in O type kidneys, hence everyone accepts it. For this, scientists took A type kidney and used special enzymes (proteins) in it. These enzymes work like a kind of ‘magic scissors’, which cut the antigens from the type A kidney. Due to this the kidney becomes like O type.

How was the universal kidney tested?

Scientists tested this universal kidney in the body of a brain-dead person. In this test, which was done with the consent of the family, the kidney continued to function for several days. It cleaned the blood. Removed waste material and functioned like a normal kidney. On the third day, some mild traces of A type were seen in the kidneys, due to which the body’s immune system became slightly active. However, this reaction was much less than normal.

Till now, if the deceased person has had diabetes or high blood pressure in the case of organ donation, then his limbs were rarely accepted for transplant. But recently, the Indian Society for Organ Transplantation (ISOT) has released a detailed report for the first time that such organs can be used, provided they are in the right condition and live up to medical standards.

What was said in the report

ISOT report, which has been published in Lancet Regional – South -East Asia, states that India does not have such sufficient data. But according to international data, 15-20 percent of the deceased organists have high blood pressure and 2-8 percent diabetes. Evidence from USRRDs and UNOS databases of the US suggests that in these cases the risk of primary non-function, acute rejections or delayed graft function (DGF) may increase slightly after kidney transplant. However, overall, the effect on graft survival is minor.

In a conversation with Times of India, Dr. Dinesh Khullar, senior nephrologist and co-writer of the ISOT report, said, “On the basis that the deceased was diabetes, it is wrong to dismiss the organ immediately. Our team has suggested a screening criterion, so that the diabetes is safe for using the diabetic donor or not. Evaluate the position of the resipient separately and then decide. “

Impact of diabetes and high BP

Uncontrolled diabetes damages the kidney blood vessels over time, which can reduce the ability to filter the kidney. At the same time, high blood pressure also weakens it by increasing the pressure on the kidney. Despite this, organ is not unusable in all cases. Many times the organs are also completely healthy.

Dr. Shiv Sarin, director of the Institute of Liver and Beller Sciences, also told Times of India, “Diabetes, high blood pressure or even the organs of the deceased donors who have history of cancer can also be used for transplant, but every case is necessary. Should, because in one-third of cases, the liver can be used to take care of the kidney from high BP donor.

Why this change is necessary

Experts believe that this new thinking may increase the number of organ donation. With this, thousands of patients sitting in waiting for transplant will get new life. However, it is necessary that strict medical testing and personal case-case should be evaluated before the transplant.

Human body is not less than a machine. Even if a person is declared medically dead, even all the parts of his body do not stop working immediately. It has become possible from the process of modern medical science and organ donation that even after death, some organs are given new life to the needy. This process is mainly possible in the case of people declared brain dead, as blood circulation and oxygen supply in their body is maintained by artificial means, so that the organs can be kept alive for some time.

Which organs live after death?

The life period of different organs is different, which is directly related to the time limit of their transplant. After removing the organs from the body, they are kept in special solution and at cold temperatures so that their functionality is maintained.

Here is the estimated time frame of some major limbs and their transplant.

Heart: The heart is one of the most sensitive organs. It is considered best to transplant within 4 to 6 hours after death.

lungs: The lungs also need to transplant within 4 to 6 hours similar to the heart. They are also highly sensitive to time.

Liver: The liver can be kept safe for 8 to 12 hours for transplant. Its comparatively long period makes it more favorable for long distances transport.

Pancreas: The pancreatic can usually be used for transplant from 12 to 18 hours. According to some sources, it can also be up to 24 hours.

Intestons: It is necessary to transplant the intestines within 8 to 16 hours.

kidney: Kidney is one of the longest surviving important organs. It can be protected for transplant from 24 to 36 hours after death, in some cases even for 72 hours. This is why the number of kidney transplant is higher than other organs.

Eyes: The cornea of the eye can be extracted within 6 to 8 hours after death. However, the cornea tissue can be stored for 14 days after removing, which gives more time for transplant.

skin: Skin tissue can be extracted within 24 hours after death and it can be stored up to 5 years after a special process.

Bones: The bones can also be stored for 5 years within 24 hours.

Heart Valve: Heart valves can be removed after death and can be stored for 10 years.

Organ donation process and challenges

Donation of vital organs is possible only when the person has been declared ‘brain dead’ in the hospital and kept on ventilator support. This is so that the organs get oxygen and they are viable. If a person dies due to stopping at home or heart rate, then the donation of his vital organs is usually not possible, because the organs are damaged in a few minutes due to lack of oxygen. Time is very important in transplantation of organs, which is called cold ischemia time. During this time, the organ is taken out of the body and kept in a cold environment. The less time it takes in this process. The success rate of transplant is equally better.

Ang donation is a life -saving work. It is important to understand that even after death some of our organs live for some time and they can give precious gifts of life to someone else. Due to the progress and quick response systems of medical science, it has now been possible that these organs can be transplanted successfully, giving thousands of people new expectations.

<p style ="Text-Align: justify;"> Kidney is an important organ of the body, but sometimes it gets damaged. In such a situation, life is in danger. Can there be life without a kidney? This is a question on which the discussion has started. This is because both the kidneys of Vrindavan’s saint Premanand Maharaj have been bad for almost 20 years. Despite this, saints revolve around Vrindavan every morning and are absorbed in devotion to Radha Rani. Many people have a question in the mind that human beings can survive like this even after both kidneys are spoiled?

<p style ="Text-Align: justify;"> When the doctor told Premanand Maharaj, this thing

<p style ="Text-Align: justify;"> Sant Premanand Maharaj told many times in his video how he is alive. He had told that years ago a doctor in Delhi’s hospital had said that Baba both your kidneys have deteriorated. Your life is from two and a half years to five years. Life ends after this. On this, Saint Premanand Maharaj told that there is trust in God, so I am alive today. Radharani is with me and his blessings. So even today I am among you all and chanting their names.

<p style ="Text-Align: justify;"> saints suffering from which disease of kidney?

<p style ="Text-Align: justify;"> According to the information, Premanand Maharaj is suffering from autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease. According to experts, this disease comes from parents to children, in which the size of the kidney becomes bigger. Water accumulates in the kidney. After which the knots gradually become and then the kidney stops working. Premanand Maharaj has such a dangerous disease, even then he is alive. Medical science is also surprised to see all this. Premanand Maharaj says that both our kidneys are bad, but I have Thakur ji with me. We are not worried. We are alive and sitting because of them.

<p style ="Text-Align: justify;"> life with a kidney

<p style ="Text-Align: justify;"> There are two kidneys in a human body. Even if a kidney is taken out due to any disease or health problem, it can lead a healthy life. Many times such cases also come up when people are born with the same kidney. & nbsp; then spend their entire life through a kidney. However, a kidney person is advised to make a lot of changes in everyday lifestyle. Kidney of people is being affected due to poor lifestyle, junk food consumption, alcohol and cigarette. & Nbsp;

<p style ="Text-Align: justify;"> Treatment in case of kidney failure

<p style ="Text-Align: justify;"> Dialysis of patients is done in case of kidney failure. Along with this, the patient is also advised for kidney transplant.
