Thousands of youths of Generation G (18 to 30 years) took to the roads on Monday (September 08, 2025) and started a protest against the government after banning several social media sites including Facebook, Instagram and YouTube in Nepal.

In protest against the ban, the youth tried to enter the Parliament House complex in New Baneshwar. He damaged the barricades and tried to arson. The police used tear gas to control the protesters. Also, some protesters are also reported injured.

The protesting youth say that there is corruption and unemployment in the country and these social media sites have been banned due to questioning it. According to the report of ‘The Kathmandu Post’, on August 25, the Nepal cabinet decided that all social media operators would have to register within seven days under 2023.

In view of the arson and demonstrations, the Nepal government imposed curfew in New Baneshwar and its surrounding areas till 10 pm. The government says that social media sites have been banned due to not being ‘registered’.

Kathmandu district administration has imposed curfew from New Baneshwar Chowk to Bijulibzar Bridge (near Everest Hotel) located in the west area of ​​the city. The curfew has been set up in the eastern region from Min Bhawan, Shanti Nagar to Tinkun Chowk, iPlex goods in North Side to Ratna State Secondary School and Shankhamul Bridge in South.

After this violent movement, PM KP Oli said, ‘I have heard about a well -planned’ Jane Ji Rebellion ‘. We are not against social media. We are against chaos, ego and degradation of our country. What cannot be accepted is that people who do business in Nepal, earn money and still do not follow the law.

The protesters gathered at 9 am in Mandla in the capital Kathmandu and started a rally with placards and slogans. The rally lasted till Baneshwar, which is a major political center of Nepal. The organizers clearly stated that this is not only one day performance, but in the coming days, they will raise their voice.

Nepal Telecom Authority (NTA) shared the names of 26 platforms, among them Facebook, Messenger, Instagram, YouTube, WhatsApp, X, Linkedin, Snapchat, Reddit, Discard, Pinterest, Signal, Threads, Wecht, Quora, Tumbler, Clubbhouse, Mastodon, Rambal, VK, VK, IMO, Jalo, Sol and Hamaro Patro are included, which are banned.
