Gold Silver On Sweets: Sweets are recognized for their taste as well as their royal presentation. Especially those sweets which are decorated with delicate sheets of silver or gold. These delicate sheets are called work. These shiny layers are not just for show, but they have centuries-old cultural, medicinal and spiritual significance. So let us know.

Ayurveda and medicinal importance

In ancient Ayurveda, gold and silver were believed to have powerful healing properties. Silver is known for its antimicrobial properties and along with cooling the body, it also strengthens the immune system. When applied on sweets, it also helps in keeping them safe by stopping the growth of bacteria. Along with this, gold is considered a symbol of vitality and longevity. It provides energy to the body and also increases strength. This is the reason why the use of Vark was not only decorative but also medicinal.

History related to Mughals

It is said that the tradition of applying gold and silver work on sweets first started during the Mughal period. The Mughal emperors, famous for their lavish taste, used to decorate royal meals with gold and silver plated utensils to showcase their wealth and grandeur. With time, this royal custom reached even the common homes through grand courts.

Religious and spiritual significance

Work in India is not just decorative, but it is a symbol of purity, prosperity and auspiciousness. On every festival, sweets plated with silver are often offered as Prasad. In Jainism also, silver work is used to decorate temple idols and sacred objects.

art of making work

Creating the work was a complex process. Small metal pieces were placed between layers of parchment and beaten until they were formed into thin sheets of gold or silver. This process continued until they became almost transparent. After this, a delicate and edible sheet was made which was decorated over the food.

In his today’s Mann Ki Baat program, Prime Minister Narendra Modi wished the entire countrymen on the occasion of Chhath festival and described it as a symbol of deep unity between culture, nature and society. He said that there is festive joy in the entire country at this time.

The Prime Minister said that recently we all celebrated Diwali and now a large number of people are preparing to celebrate the great festival of Chhath. PM Modi described Chhath festival as a symbol of deep unity between culture, nature and society.

PM Modi said that every section of the society stands together on the ghats of Chhath, which is the most beautiful example of India’s social unity. He gave a message to all the countrymen that no matter which corner of the country or the world you are in, definitely participate in this great festival of Chhath and experience this experience. He bowed to Chhathi Maiya and especially wished the people of Bihar, Jharkhand and Purvanchal a very happy Chhath festival.

What did PM Modi say on Indian breed of dogs?

PM Modi said, “About five years ago, I had discussed Indian breed dogs in this program. I had urged the countrymen as well as our security forces to adopt Indian breed dogs, because they adapt more easily to our environment and conditions. BSF and CRPF have increased the number of Indian breed dogs in their squads. For training of dogs BSF’s National Training Center is in Tekanpur, Gwalior. Here, special focus is being given to Rampur Hound of Uttar Pradesh, Mudhol Hound of Karnataka and Maharashtra.

PM Modi further said, “Training manuals for Indian breed dogs have been rewritten to bring out their unique strengths. Indian dogs like Mongreles, Mudhol Hounds, Kombai and Pandicona are being trained at CRPF’s Dog Breeding and training school in Bengaluru. Last year in Lucknow, All India Police Duty Meet was organized. At that time, a dog named Riya had attracted people’s attention. This is a Mudhol Hound which has been trained by BSF. Riya won the first prize here by defeating many foreign breeds.”

When it comes to Diwali, rows of lamps, shining markets and the smell of sweets come before our eyes. Today’s India sparkles with modern lights, but even centuries ago, when there was no electricity, the glow of Diwali was equally special. History tells that the fragrance of this festival reached the Mughal courts also. The walls of the palaces of the emperors, who were often known for their Islamic discipline, were illuminated with lamps on the night of Diwali.

At that time Diwali was not just a religious festival but had become a symbol of the fusion of cultures. From Emperor Akbar to Muhammad Shah included this festival in their royal tradition. In the Mughal Sultanate, it was given a new name ‘Jashn-e-Chiraga’, i.e. Festival of Lights.

Special courts were held on the occasion of Diwali.

Akbar’s era was not only the golden age of Mughal rule but also a period of cultural co-existence. He never showed hesitation in adopting Hindu customs. During Diwali, every corner of Agra Fort and the streets of Fatehpur Sikri was illuminated with rows of lamps. Historian Abul Fazal has written in ‘Ain-e-Akbari’ that Akbar used to hold special courts on the occasion of Diwali. Royal banquets were held in the courtyard of the palace decorated with lamps, in which Hindu and Muslim courtiers used to sit together. His courtiers Birbal and Begum Jodhabai were considered the soul of this event.

The form in which Diwali is celebrated today with firecrackers and fireworks started during the Mughal period. In the 18th-19th century, the Nawabs of Bengal and Awadh patronized festivals like Durga Puja and Diwali and organized spectacular fireworks. According to Dr. Katherine Butler Scofield, fireworks had become common on Diwali by the 18th century. Some scholars opposed this festival and called it un-Islamic, but Akbar accepted it as a festival of love and light. For them, this festival was more than a religious ritual, it was a symbol of unity and harmony.

Between 1720-1748, Diwali began to be celebrated in a royal style during the reign of Muhammad Shah Rangeela. Preparations started weeks in advance in the palaces of Delhi and Agra. Innumerable lamps were lit around the fort and the fragrance of sweets spread throughout the court.

Shahjahan made Diwali more grand

Emperor Shahjahan made Delhi the capital and built the Red Fort and made Diwali more grand. He started the tradition of lighting the sky lamp. In the Red Fort, huge lamps were lit on 40 yard high pillars, whose light spread across the entire Chandni Chowk. The palace would be decorated with lamps, chandeliers and lampshades, there would be music and poetry gatherings in the court and the king would watch the lights from the balcony.

During the reign of Aurangzeb, the celebration of Diwali remained formal. He considered it the tradition of Hindu kings. Nevertheless, the royal families of Jodhpur and Jaipur sent gifts every year on Diwali and people continued to light lamps in their homes.

India is a country that is full of diversities. Every state, every village, different customs and traditions are seen in every village. Some traditions change over time, while some are still played as it was played centuries ago. The special thing is that many such customs are also seen in these traditions which seem a bit strange to hear, but there are beliefs related to society and culture behind them. One of these traditions is still played in some parts of Assam, where when a girl first gets periods, she is married to a tree. This is not a story but a truth that has been going on for generations.

Where is this tradition played?
This unique tradition is played in Boganigaon, Solmari village in the district of Assam state. This tradition is called Tolini Biah in the local language. This is a cultural and traditional custom, which the people there still play with great faith and respect. This marriage is seen as a ritual, in which the girl is prepared for social and mentally changes.

When a girl gets periods for the first time, the people there consider that time as a new beginning of her life. This is a big change, and it is believed that this ritual is performed to see this change as purity. At this time the girl is kept separate from the house for a few days. He is neither allowed to get out in the sun, nor is it allowed to live with the rest of the family members. It usually lasts for 3 to 5 days.

Which tree is married?
A few days after the period, a girl is married to a banana tree. This marriage is like a common marriage. In which the house is decorated, there are songs and music, relatives and villagers gather, the girl is decorated and the banana tree is prepared as a groom. This ritual is symbolic and is considered to be the first marriage of the girl. Family members are fully involved in this wedding and celebrate it as a big celebration. During this time, the special thing is that the girl has to follow certain rules, such as just eating fruits and staying away from the sun. However, this marriage from a banana tree is not a real marriage, but a traditional ritual.

What is the reason behind this tradition
There is also a belief behind this tradition that this marriage is done for the long life of her husband’s husband to protect the girl from evil eyes and her husband’s husband. Some people also believe that such rituals are the way to respect the changes in women’s body. However, in today’s era, many people also question this tradition, but many families of the village still play it as part of their culture.

MiG-21, the oldest and brave warrior of the Indian Air Force, is formally retiring next month. This fighter aircraft, which protected the sky for about six decades, was once called the “backbone of the Air Force”. MiG-21 waved India’s victory in many important campaigns from the 1971 war. But increasing technical challenges and accidents have put a complete stop on its journey. Now this aircraft will always be remembered by becoming a glorious chapter of Indian defense history. On Monday (August 25, 2025), the MiG-21 fighter jets took their final flight at the air base at Naal in Bikaner. These aircraft will be given a final farewell in the formal retirement ceremony held in Chandigarh on 26 September.

Air Force chief filled the final flight of MiG
Air Force Chief Air Chief Marshal Amar Preet Singh flew from Nal to MiG-21 on August 18-19 on the symbolic farewell of MiG-21. It was a passionate moment for several generations of trained pilots on a fighter aircraft of the Russian origin serving the Air Force for 62 years. Air Chief Marshal Singh said after his flight- ‘MiG-21 has been the most powerful fighter aircraft of the Indian Air Force since its inception in the 1960s and we are still using it. It is one of the highest, large -scale supersonic fighter aircraft in history, with more than 11,000 aircraft used in more than 60 countries.

MiG-21 starts in India
In 1963, India won the first batch of MiG-21 aircraft. A total of 13 aircraft were brought during this period. At that time, the Air Force was looking for a high-altitude interceptor that could compete with aircraft like American U-2 spy plane. This was the reason that India bought MiG-21. MiG-21 was not limited to interceptors only. Over time its role reached ground attack, fighter reconnaissance mission, air defense and even new pilots training. However, training was not part of its original design. Initially, permission to fly MiG-21 was given only to the most experienced pilots of the Indian Air Force. The reason for this was its challenging flight capabilities. The small size of the aircraft, limited cockpit visibility and landing speed of more than 300 kilometers per hour made it extremely difficult for new pilots.

MiG-21 made historical contribution in many wars
The contribution of MiG-21 in many wars was historic. The aircraft participated in the 1965 war and played an important role in the 1971 battle on the attack on the Governor’s residence in Dhaka, especially on 14 December. The Governor resigned the next day and on 16 December, Pakistan surrendered and 93,000 of its soldiers laid down their arms. Subsequently, in 1999, under the Operation White Sea, the aircraft also showed enlightenment when MiG-21 killed a Pakistani Atlantic aircraft infiltrating Indian territory. In the 2010s, MiG-21 showed its strength when India launched accurate airstrikes on terrorist bases in Pakistan after the 2019 Pulwama terror attack. At the same time, this aircraft remained active in the 2020s and played an important role in Ladakh patrolling the Line of Actual Control (LAC) with China.

Air Force’s backbone remained for decades
Despite the difficulties, the MiG-21 remained the favorite aircraft of the Indian Air Force. Not only this, it remained the backbone of the Air Force until Russia-made Sukhoi SU-30MKI was included in the fleet in the mid-2000s. During the years MiG-21 was continuously upgraded to modern weapons and avionics. This made it much more than “just one fighter jet”. MiG-21 was not just a fighter jet, but it also became a symbol of strong military relations in India-Russia. This relationship also persists for decades like MiG-21 and is equally strong today.

Price of MiG-21
What was the exact price of MiG-21 in the 1960s is not clear, but this aircraft was considered very cheap due to mass production. Its cost was much lower than the western fighter jets like F-4 phantom of that time. During this period, the Israeli intelligence agency gave an Iraqi pilot 3 million dollars in lieu of its MiG-21. It is clear that at that time it was important to achieve this aircraft for testing.
