Vijay government of Tamil Nadu has received a big blow from Madras High Court. The court canceled the order regarding giving government jobs to the families of those killed in the stampede in Karur last year. The court says that the order to give government jobs to the families of those killed in the stampede violates Articles 14 and 16 of the Constitution. In September last year, there was a stampede during a TVK rally in Karur district. A large number of people had reached there to listen to Vijay. 41 people died and many others were injured in this accident. CBI is investigating this matter.

Madras High Court said that by maintaining the order of giving government jobs to the families of those killed in the Karur stampede, in future other people will also start demanding similar employment, which will lead to a flood of such claims. After the hearing, the court canceled the order of the Tamil Nadu government. Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay had handed over appointment letters to 31 relatives of those who lost their lives in the stampede on July 10, 2026.

41 people died in Karur stampede

This accident took place at a rally organized under the leadership of Vijay on September 27 in Veluchamipuram, Karur. Due to the sudden stampede in the crowd, 41 people were killed and at least 110 others were injured. After the accident, there was a demand for an independent investigation into this incident. Taking cognizance of the matter, the Supreme Court issued an interim order on October 13 and handed over the investigation to the CBI. The court formed a monitoring committee under the chairmanship of retired Supreme Court judge Justice Ajay Rastogi to oversee the investigation.

CBI is investigating the case

After this CBI has started its investigation. The investigating agency has so far called many senior officials of TVK for questioning in this matter. Those who appeared before the investigating agency include TVK state general secretary Bussi Anand, joint secretaries Nirmal Kumar and Adhav Arjun and Karur West district secretary Mathiyazhagan. The investigation is continuing under the supervision of a Supreme Court-appointed committee as the CBI probes into possible lapses and tries to pin down responsibility in one of the worst election campaign-related accidents in recent times.
