Recently a new phishing scam has come to light in which users are tricked into stealing their Apple ID by tricking them into saying that they have lost their iPhone.

How does this Lost iPhone Alert scam work?

According to Switzerland’s National Cyber ​​Security Center (NCSC), when a user reports his iPhone lost and activates the Find My iPhone feature, he can write a message on the lock screen like if this phone is found, contact this number. This is the place where swindlers lay their traps.

Cyber ​​criminals posing as Apple Find My team send iMessage or SMS to the user. These messages also contain details like the model, color, storage of the phone so that everything seems real. Then it is written, “Your lost iPhone 14 Midnight 128GB has been found. Click on the link below to see the location.”

As soon as the user clicks on that link, he reaches a fake Apple login page. This page looks like the real Apple site but as soon as the person enters their Apple ID and password, all the information goes straight to the fraudsters. After this, criminals use this data to unlock the stolen device and sell it.

How to avoid this dangerous scam?

Cyber ​​security agencies have clearly warned that never click on any unknown link, even if it seems to be from Apple. Even if you open the link by mistake, check the URL carefully before entering the Apple ID. The real site always ends with apple.com.

Also, if your phone is stolen then do not write your main email ID on the lock screen. Use a different email or contact number instead so that fraudsters cannot directly access your information. Additionally, it is also important to install a PIN lock on the SIM card and keep two-level verification (2FA) on.
