How Alzheimer’s Impacts Relationships: If, after nearly four decades of marriage, your spouse suddenly asks you again, “Will you marry me?” So it becomes not just an emotional moment, but a deep story of illness and unbreakable love, battling memory. Something similar happened to 78-year-old Linda Feldman in November 2025. Her husband Michael O’Riley (77) is suffering from Alzheimer’s. Some days he doesn’t even remember that Linda is his wife, but one thing never changes, he just knows that he loves her very much.

In Linda’s words in this story published recently in The Washington Post, he just knows that he loves me, it never changes. In today’s times, where relationships break easily, this story shows that true love can survive even in the face of difficult challenges like illness.

life before memories

Michael and Linda met in 1979. Both worked in the field of law and their friendship gradually turned into a deep relationship. Despite having different natures, they became a part of each other’s world. Travels, long conversations and time spent with family became the hallmark of their life. In 1987, they married Sadegi and lived together like a strong family for years.

When the disease began to be understood

About seven years ago, Michael was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. This disease not only takes away memories, but also gradually limits a person’s identity, self-reliance and social life. Michael, who once argued in court for hours without notes, now started getting confused in words and ways. Linda took care of him at home for a long time, it was a very exhausting experience mentally and emotionally.

Irritability, confusion and loss of identity are common problems in Alzheimer’s patients, but the one saving grace with Michael was that his affection never diminished. He still held Linda’s hand, hugged her and said “I love you.”

Caring and emotional health

Two and a half years ago, Linda had to shift Michael to a memory care facility with a heavy heart. This decision is very difficult for many families, but proper care is important not only for the mental health of the patient but also for the caregiver. Linda admits that here she is relieved that Michael is safe.

Once again ‘yes’

In November 2025, Michael proposed marriage to Linda again. Just like the first time. This was a new thing for them, but for Linda it was an emotional moment beyond memories. They remarried in a small ceremony in January. It is not just a story, but also emphasizes how important emotional connection is in a disease like Alzheimer’s.
