The reason for this is that only 50 percent of the daily production is being produced in the entire country. We import 60 percent of the LPG consumption in our country. 90 percent of that 60 percent comes from the Strait of Hormus. It is closed for India. Thousands of hotels are closing in every state

The Aam Aadmi Party chief further said, “The biggest brunt of this is being borne by restaurants and hotels. The government has issued an order that LPG gas will not be provided to restaurants and hotels. In view of security, restaurants and hotels cannot keep stock of these cylinders. Cylinders are supplied to them daily. Now if LPG is suddenly stopped, they do not have stock even for two days.”

Due to this, 20 percent of hotels and restaurants in Mumbai have been closed. There is a possibility of 50 percent hotels being closed in the next three days. 10 thousand hotels in Tamil Nadu are on the verge of closure. Irvind Kejriwal said, “In Morbi, the ‘capital of tile industry’ of Gujarat, where there are 650 industries, 170 have been closed and one lakh people have become unemployed. There is a possibility of more than one crore people becoming unemployed suddenly in the entire country. We can imagine what would be the situation if so many people become unemployed suddenly.”

Arvind Kejriwal said, “In the past few days, the government has increased the prices of domestic and commercial cylinders. Restaurant associations in Maharashtra and Karnataka have warned that if the supply is not improved, food shops may be closed within a few days. Industry representatives say that this disruption has started affecting operations in Mumbai and Bengaluru.

Restaurants on the verge of closure

According to media reports, India Hotels and Restaurants Association President Vijay Shetty said that the shortage is spreading rapidly and this sector may soon come to a standstill.

He said, “If this shortage continues, all restaurants in Mumbai will be closed in the next two days.” He also said that the association has written a letter to Union Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri and is also in touch with Maharashtra Civil Supplies Minister Chhagan Bhujbal. Restaurant owners say that commercial LPG supply has largely stopped since Sunday, while domestic cylinders are being delivered in two to eight days after booking.

What is the government’s decision?

Let us tell you that India imports up to 90 percent of its LPG requirement from the Middle East. Due to tension there, the number of ships coming through the Strait of Hormuz has reduced. Amidst this limited supply, the government has decided to provide relief to domestic consumers because hotels or restaurants also have the option of large electric ovens, piped natural gas (PNG) and induction. Whereas at the domestic level, people mostly depend on 14.2 kg LPG cylinders. This is the reason why oil marketing companies like Indian Oil Corporation, Bharat Petroleum and Hindustan Petroleum have been instructed to give priority to domestic cooking gas supply amid supply shortage.

Officials said that to prevent hoarding by consumers, the waiting period for LPG delivery has been increased from 15 days to 25 days. Sources said India is looking for new international suppliers to stabilize LPG supply, which includes possible imports from Algeria, Australia, Canada and Norway.
