To promote technical education in the country and to provide financial assistance to talented students, the central and state governments are running many scholarship schemes. There are schemes available especially for students studying M.Tech (Master of Technology), under which financial assistance of thousands of rupees is given every month.

Amidst the rising cost of higher education, these scholarship schemes are proving to be of great help to the students. Their objective is to encourage economically deserving students to move forward in the field of technical education, research and innovation.

One of the most popular schemes for M.Tech students includes the PG Scholarship Scheme of All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE). Under this scheme, a scholarship of Rs 12,400 per month is provided to the eligible students. It is available to students who have passed national level examinations like GATE, GPAT or CEED and are enrolled in a full-time postgraduate program in an AICTE approved institute.

UGC’s special scheme for SC/ST students

The University Grants Commission (UGC) also operates a special scholarship scheme for students belonging to the Scheduled Caste (SC) and Scheduled Tribe (ST) categories. Under this scheme, financial assistance of Rs 7,800 per month is given to eligible students. Apart from this, assistance of Rs 15,000 is also provided every year, which can be used for study material, research work and other educational needs. To avail the benefit of this scheme, it is necessary for the student to belong to SC or ST category and studying in regular and full-time M.Tech course in a recognized institute.

Application can be made from NSP portal

Application for UGC scholarships is made online through the National Scholarship Portal (NSP). During the application, students have to submit caste certificate, documents related to educational qualification and information of the institute. Students are advised to complete the application process within the stipulated time limit so that they do not face any kind of problem.

Also getting benefits from state government schemes

Apart from the Central Government, many state governments are also providing financial assistance to the students pursuing technical education. In many states including Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, different scholarship and stipend schemes are being run for meritorious and needy students. In many states, assistance ranging from Rs 15,000 to Rs 50,000 per month is given to Scheduled Caste, Scheduled Tribe, Economically Weaker Section (EWS) and students engaged in research work. However, the amount and eligibility conditions may vary state-wise.
