Today, gathering of huge crowds of people has become common in India, the world’s most populous country. But since the beginning of this year till now, many serious accidents have happened in India due to this huge crowd. Be it the crowd of devotees in the temples, the victory ceremony, the crowd of passengers at the railway stations or the crowd of fans of the leaders at political rallies. So far this year, there have been eight stampede accidents in India, in which a total of 129 people have died.

In a country like India, during religious events, huge crowds of devotees often gather at temples and pilgrimage sites. This often leads to overcrowding in most cases and creates difficulties in security measures.

One such incident of stampede took place on Saturday (November 1, 2025) at Sri Venkateswara Swamy Temple located in Srikakulam district of Andhra Pradesh. Where a huge crowd of devotees gathered on the occasion of Kartik Ekadashi and due to lack of adequate arrangements, nine people died and many were injured. A child was also included among those who died. Eyewitnesses of the accident blamed the poor crowd management system of the temple administration for this accident.

Where have stampede incidents taken place in India?

Andhra Pradesh temple stampede (1 November): At least nine people died after a huge crowd gathered at Sri Venkateswara Swamy temple in Srikakulam district of Andhra Pradesh on the occasion of Ekadashi. These included eight women and one child.

Karur stampede (27 September): A total of 41 people were killed and more than 50 injured when a stampede broke out during a public meeting of Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK) chief and actor-politician Vijay in Karur, Tamil Nadu on September 27, 2025.

Haridwar Stampede (27 July): On July 27, 2025, in Haridwar, Uttarakhand, a stampede broke out due to a huge crowd of devotees gathering on the staircase-like path leading to Maa Mansa Devi temple. A total of eight people, including a child, died in this accident and 30 others were injured. Later, after the death of a 55-year-old woman in AIIMS Hospital, Rishikesh, the number of deaths increased to 9.

Goa temple stampede (3 May): Six people were killed in a stampede at the Lairai Devi Jatra temple in Shirgaon, North Goa. Apart from this, 70 other people were injured. Temple committee chairman Dinanath Gavankar said that about 50 to 70 thousand devotees were present in the temple at the time of the stampede.

New Delhi Railway Station Stampede (15 February): At the same time, 18 people including four children died in the stampede at New Delhi Railway Station. This accident happened when a large number of passengers were trying to board trains to attend the Maha Kumbh Mela organized in Prayagraj.

Mahakumbh Stampede (January 29): 30 people were killed and 60 others were injured in a major stampede during the Maha Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh. This accident happened in the early hours when lakhs of devotees had gathered to take bath on the holy occasion of Mauni Amavasya.

Tirupati stampede (January 9): A large crowd of devotees had gathered at the Lord Sri Venkateswara Swamy Temple located in the Tirumala Hills of Andhra Pradesh to get tickets for Baikuntha Dwara Darshanam, which led to a stampede and six people died in this accident.

On the occasion of Mauni Amavasya (29 January 2025) in Prayagraj Mahakumbh (Maha Kumbh 2025), there was a stampede due to increasing crowd before bathing. 30 devotees were killed in this stampede accident while many devotees were injured. The Judicial Inquiry Commission was formed by the UP government to investigate the Mahakumbh stampede, now the Judicial Inquiry Commission will record the statements of common citizens.

During Mahakumbh 2025, the Commission formed to investigate the Sangam Noj on the festival of Mauni Amavasya has sought evidence and videos from the common citizens about the stampede. The Commission has been asked to provide videos and evidence in two weeks. Any person can send evidence and video to the judicial commission through WhatsApp number and email ID in two weeks.

The identity sending video will be confidential

Apart from this, any person can directly give evidence and video to the office at Lucknow Vikas Bhavan. It has also been said that the identity of the person giving video and evidence will be kept confidential. A three -member committee headed by retired Justice Harsh Kumar of the stampede on the day of Mauni Amavasya is investigating.

More than 66 crore people took holy dip in the confluence

According to Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, “Mahakumbh-2025, starting from Paush Purnima, Mahakumbh-2025, February 26 in Prayagraj today, till the date of Mahashivratri, more than 66 crore 21 lakh devotees got the virtuous benefit of bathing in the holy Triveni in a total of 45 days till the date of Mahashivratri.”
