Maharashtra MBBS Bond: The Maharashtra government has abolished the almost two-decade old rule under which students had to serve a compulsory bond for one year after completing MBBS studies. This system was implemented in 2006 with the aim of removing the shortage of doctors in rural areas. Now, with time, the number of medical college and MBBS seats has increased rapidly, whereas the posts available for bond service in government hospitals remain almost limited. In such a situation, thousands of young doctors had to wait a long time to get posting, due to which both their studies and career were getting affected. In view of this situation, the state government has now decided to end this system.

Why were MBBS bond rules abolished?

According to the Maharashtra government, when this bond policy was implemented in 2006, there were about 4500 MBBS seats in the state. Now this number has increased to more than 11,000. On the other hand, the number of posts available for bond service in government departments did not increase in the same proportion. Because of this, every year a large number of MBBS pass doctors keep waiting for posting. Many students, despite being eligible for admission in Post Graduate Medical courses, could not take admission merely due to non-completion of bond service.

The government believes that the existing system was no longer practical. Apart from this, the government said in its order that many new MBBS doctors used to complete the bond service only to get eligibility for admission in PG course. In such a situation, he was not able to provide medical services with full efficiency at his work place. Apart from this, it was also recognized that doctors who have recently completed MBBS studies are not fully prepared to provide emergency medical services independently. Keeping all these aspects in view, the bond arrangement was reviewed and it was decided to end it.

Which students will get the benefit?

This decision of the government will be applicable to the students doing MBBS from government, government aided and municipal medical colleges. Apart from this, students of those private medical colleges who have availed the benefits of government schemes will also be able to avail this benefit. According to the government order, those students who have not yet got posting for bond service, who got posting but did not join or who could not complete their closed service due to some reason, will now be exempted from this mandatory service. However, those doctors who have joined their bond posting before the government order is issued, they will have to complete the prescribed period. Those who earlier deposited the fine to avoid the bond will not get the amount back.

What will happen next now?

The state government has clarified that now new bond posting will not be done. Along with this, instructions have also been given to close the online bond invitation portal. After this decision, now MBBS pass students will be able to directly move towards their further studies and career without waiting for bond posting. This is also expected to reduce the delay in admission to post graduate medical courses.

Doctors and students welcomed the decision

Maharashtra Association of Resident Doctors welcomed this decision of the government and called it a long pending reform. The organization says that this will provide relief to students from unnecessary delays in PG admission and starting their career. Representatives associated with students and parents also said that earlier students had to wait for posting in government hospitals to fulfill the bond. Many times, even in medical colleges, all the students did not get opportunities on time, due to which they had to look for posting at other places.
