Reasons For Male Infertility: In the last few years, cases of infertility among men are increasing rapidly and its direct impact is visible on young couples thinking of starting a family. People believe that infertility is only a women’s problem, but men are responsible for about 40 percent of the total infertility cases in the country. Along with this, the reasons related to women are also around 40 percent, while 10 percent such cases have been seen in which the problem is on both sides and the remaining 10 percent remains completely unexplained.

Why is infertility increasing in men?

The biggest cause of male infertility is decreasing sperm count, its motility and morphology. A 2022 global meta-analysis found that between 1973 and 2018, men’s average sperm concentration declined by a massive 51.6 percent. The World Health Organization has also changed its scale and has now considered 15 million sperm (ml) as the lower limit of normal limit, whereas earlier this limit was considered to be around 40 million (ml).

What do experts say?

Experts say that today not only sperm count but also its quality has become a big challenge. With increasing age, the ‘biological clock’ in men also shows effect, due to which the quality of sperm DNA decreases and the health risks for the future child can also increase. Late parenthood, stress, irregular lifestyle, smoking, alcohol, poor eating habits and long working hours cause severe damage to sperm.

What came out in the study?

Apart from this, recent studies have found that air pollution, microplastics, nanoplastics and chemical exposure are having a serious impact on the male reproductive system capacity. Chemicals like BPA, phthalates and many pesticides disrupt the natural balance of hormones and reduce testosterone, which affects sperm production. PM2.5, heavy metals and free radicals present in smoking damage sperm DNA. An AIIMS study found azoospermia (absence of sperm in the sample) and OATS syndrome, such as lower than normal sperm count, mobility or size, were the most common causes of male infertility among men.

When should one get tested?

Experts advise couples that if they are unable to conceive even after trying for a year, then men should also get themselves tested immediately. For correct assessment, three different semen reports at an interval of 2 to 3 days are considered necessary. In the normal report, volume more than 2 ml, count more than 20 ml, motility more than 50 percent and normal forms more than 30 percent are considered standard.

What is the treatment?

Problems like blockage in the reproductive tract can be cured by surgery. In many cases, it is possible to become a father with the help of only one sperm through assisted reproductive technology like IUI or ICSI.

Causes Of Male Infertility: In today’s changing lifestyle, fertility rates are also changing rapidly. Many studies have found that 40 to 50 percent of the total cases of increasing infertility are due to reasons related to men. Men’s fertility is affected by many reasons, of which smoking, drinking excessive alcohol and sedentary lifestyle are considered to be the main reasons. Fertility is decreasing all over the world, in such a situation it becomes very important for men to understand these lifestyle factors and make improvements in time.

Cigarette smoke badly affects the quality of sperm. The harmful chemicals and heavy metals present in it like cadmium and lead damage the DNA of sperm. This reduces the molality of the sperm, that is, the ability of the sperm to move forward and reach the egg decreases, this has a direct impact on fertilization and the chances of pregnancy are reduced. Many global studies have also found that the sperm concentration of smokers is 12 to 20 percent lower than that of non-smokers. Let us tell you what are the reasons for increasing infertility apart from cigarettes and alcohol.

What are the reasons why infertility is increasing?

Apart from smoking and alcohol, there are many other reasons due to which infertility is increasing rapidly. According to Palanibalajifertilitycenter,

effect of drugs

The most commonly used illicit drug worldwide is cannabis (marijuana), and the majority of its consumers are men. If a man consumes cannabis more than once a week for three consecutive months, his sperm count and sperm concentration may decrease. If other drugs or alcohol are also taken along with it, the harm increases further.

obesity

As the BMI of men increases, body fat starts increasing around the scrotum. Due to this, the temperature there increases, which affects the process of sperm formation. Increased fat also increases oxidative stress, which affects sperm motility, DNA quality and interaction with the egg.

mental health

Whether the stress is due to work, family or any other reason, continuous psychological stress in men can impair sperm quality. Many times, due to stress, semen parameters become abnormal, which reduces the chances of becoming a father.

diet

Sperm quality largely depends on diet. Sperm parameters are seen to be better in people who eat a diet rich in omega-3 fatty acids, antioxidants and vitamins, such as the Mediterranean diet. This type of diet is very low in saturated and trans fats, which are believed to be associated with poor semen quality.

effect of age

Although there is no strict limit, but age above 40 years is generally considered to be the age of becoming an advanced father. With increasing age, genetic changes also occur in sperm, which can increase the risk of some health problems in the child.

Zero Sperm Count In Men: If you want to become a father and you suddenly find out that your sperm count has suddenly become zero. You might be thinking that this happens rarely, but it does happen and it is called azoospermia. Azoospermia is a condition when there is no sperm present in the semen of a man. It can be of two types – obstructive, in which due to some obstruction the sperm cannot reach the semen, and non-obstructive, in which the problem occurs in the process of sperm formation itself. Let us tell you when this problem occurs and what is its treatment.

How common is this problem?

Now the question comes that how common is this problem, the answer is quite a lot. If about 10 percent of men are struggling with infertility, then overall azoospermia is found in 1 percent of them.

What are the causes of azoospermia?

There can be many reasons for this happening. Some genetic conditions like Klinefelter syndrome, some medical treatments like chemotherapy or radiation and many other reasons. The most obvious reason could also be vasectomy, in which sperm are not able to mix with other fluids. In many cases the cause is not fully understood, such as pregnancy or poor testicular development in childhood.

How to deal with this problem

According to Hopkinsmedicine, first of all meet a male infertility expert. After this it is necessary to get the semen analysis done again. In a lab that specializes in sperm testing, because there can be a lot of difference in reports from different places. It is also important to know whether small amounts of sperm are present or not, because this can completely change the course of treatment. Earlier, almost every azoospermic man had to undergo biopsy to determine whether the problem was obstructive or non-obstructive. But now biopsy is usually not done alone, because in most cases even without biopsy it can be estimated whether there is a blockage or sperm are not being produced.

During testicular dissection, it has been found that the condition of sperm formation can be different in different parts of the testis. At some places less sperm are being produced, at some places maturation stops, and at some places sperm producing cells are not present at all. For this reason, diagnostic biopsy alone often does not change treatment.

How is treatment decided?

It completely depends on the patient. Many factors like the age of the partner, fertility of both, medical reports, family plans and financial situation decide the treatment.
In some people, removing the blockage such as vasectomy reversal, in some people quitting harmful drugs or addictions, in some people correcting hormonal problems and in some varicocele surgery may be helpful. For many men, ART is the best option by extracting sperm directly from the testicles.

Every couple dreams of starting a family, but this path of everyone is not easy. Recently, the World Health Organization (WHO) and many medical studies have revealed that 1 out of every 6 men (1 in 6 men) worldwide are facing the problem of infertility i.e. infertility. That is, if you think that the problem in pregnancy is only a problem related to women, then it is a misunderstanding. Research clearly says that men also become the same reason.

What does research say?

According to WHO and many international medical journals, Infertility is not limited to women just. In 40 to 50 percent of cases, pregnancy is not done due to men. Many reasons account for this. Lifestyle, catering mistakes, alcohol-cigarette consumption, stress and timely testing.

Major reason for infertility in men

Smoking and alcohol: These habits reduce both the quality and number of sperm.

Lack of nutrition: Vitamin D, zinc and folic acid deficiency also affects sperm production.

Lack of stress and sleep: Continuous stress causes hormonal imbalance, which reduces fertility.

Overweight or obesity: Research suggests that obesity reduces testosterone levels.

Avoiding testing: Many men do not get testing due to shame or hesitation, due to which treatment starts late.

Why is fertility test important?

According to doctors, if success is not being achieved even after trying for 1 year, then both men and women must do fertility testing. This causes the problem quickly and increases the chances of treatment through advance techniques like IVF, IUI.

Need for support and awareness

Couples struggling with infertility often feel themselves alone. In such a situation, the support of family and friends matters a lot. Experts believe that it is very important to break the social stigma (stigma) about infertility. It is possible to solve the problem by openly interacting and taking advice from a doctor in time.

Expert opinion

Dr. Prashant Singh, Andrologist, AIIMS, New Delhi, says, “Today one in every 6 male is struggling with infertility.

WiFi has become an important part of our life in modern lifestyle. Whether it is at home or in office, it is very important to have Wi-Fi everywhere. Do you know that Wi-Fi can also cause infertility? If not, then let us tell you about it.

What is the connection of Wi-Fi and infertility?

Wi-Fi devices such as routers and laptops and smartphones connected to it emit RF-MR on the frequency of 2.45 GHz. These are non-ignorant razes, which are considered safe for human health. However, many studies have surfaced that these raj contact for a long time can lead to negative impact on the reproductive system. In particular, sperm dynamics, numbers, and DNA integrity may be affected in men.

Research was done in Japan

A research was done in Japan during 2018. It was revealed that the sperm samples placed near the Wi-Fi router found less dynamics after two hours. In this study, 51 men samples were divided into three groups. The first sample was placed in a Wi-Fi area. The second sample was kept in the Wi-Fi area, but a shield was installed in the middle of it. At the same time, the third sample was completely in touch with Wi-Fi. After two hours, the dynamics of the sperm with the third sample were 26.4 %, while in the control group it was found to be 53.3 %. At the same time, 23.3 % sperm present in the third sample after 24 hours were found dead, while in the remaining two samples this figure was 8.4 %.

Effect on sperm health

Motability, count and DN integrity are very important for sperm health. Research found that the RF-MR rage emanating from Wi-Fi increases the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in sperm, which causes oxidative stress. This oxidative stress increases lipid peroxidation in sperm membranes, which can lead to their motility and DNA damage.

This thing came out in 2011 study

During 2011, a study was published in Fertility and Sterility magazine. It was told that 25 % sperm in samples of sperm kept for four hours near the laptop associated with Wi-Fi became sedan. At the same time, DNA was damaged in 9 %. This was due to RF-MR instead of heating of impact laptop, because the laptops which were not connected to Wi-Fi, the damage in those samples was very low.

Effect on women’s fertility health

In many research, women’s fertility health was also worked. During 2022, a research published in the International Journal of Public Health Research found that RF-MR Ovary can damage the eggs, ovarian follicles, and fetal development in the Ovary. This may increase the risk of hormonal disabilities, ovulation decrease and miscarriage.
