African countries Burkina Faso and Mali have given a strong reply to America and announced a ban on the entry of American citizens into their countries. Both the countries have taken this decision in protest against the similar travel ban imposed by the Trump administration on citizens of 39 countries. The administration of US President Donald Trump had recently decided to impose a travel ban on citizens of 39 countries. This list includes many countries in Africa and other regions, whose citizens have imposed strict restrictions on entry into America.

The governments of Burkina Faso and Mali have made it clear that they do not want to discriminate against any country. They say that while their citizens can be banned, the same rules will apply to American citizens also.

After the confirmation of the kidnapping of five Indian citizens in the West African country Mali, the Government of India and the Indian Embassy have started immediate efforts for their safe release. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said on Monday that the Indian Embassy in Bamako is in constant touch with the Mali authorities and the concerned company. According to the Ministry of External Affairs, the incident took place on 6 November 2025 in an area that has seen several attacks and kidnappings by armed groups in the last few years.

Officials in New Delhi said that the Indian Embassy is in constant touch with Mali’s security agencies and the company where these Indians were working. MEA Headquarters is also coordinating with other foreign missions and international partners to understand the security situation in the region. The ministry said that ‘all necessary efforts are being made for their release and the situation is being constantly monitored.’

Mali is struggling with instability
Mali is one of the most unstable countries in West Africa. The situation here has worsened due to several military coups and increasing activities of jihadi groups linked to Al-Qaeda and Islamic State. Kidnappings of foreign workers are particularly common in the central and northern parts of Mali, as government control is very weak in these areas.

Mali’s army’s morale is declining, people are losing confidence in the military government

Mali’s military junta is now struggling to maintain order in the country, which took power through a coup in 2020 and 2021. In fact, isolation from Western allies and dependence on foreign mercenaries has made Mali weak and extremely stressed. The morale of Mali’s army is completely weakened and it lacks resources. Additionally, due to the continued advance of militants and the collapse of infrastructure, people’s trust in the government is eroding.
