India’s Industrial Production: Maintaining GDP growth and creating new employment opportunities has become a big challenge for the countries facing America’s high tariffs. At a time when the Indian Rupee is continuously weakening against the Dollar and fluctuations are being seen in the stock market, a positive news has emerged from the economic front.

The country’s industrial production increased by 4 percent in September. This growth has been recorded mainly due to the better performance of the manufacturing sector. According to official data from the National Statistical Office (NSO) released on Tuesday, industrial production, measured in terms of the Index of Industrial Production (IIP), grew by 3.2 percent in September 2024.

Performance of manufacturing and other sectors

NSO has revised the provisional estimate of industrial production growth for August 2025 from 4 percent to 4.1 percent. According to the new data, the production of the manufacturing sector increased by 4.8 percent in September, whereas it increased by 4 percent a year ago i.e. in September 2024. However, there was a decline of 0.4 percent in the mining sector, whereas there was a marginal growth of 0.2 percent a year ago.

increase in power generation

Electricity generation recorded an increase of 3.1 percent in September 2025, whereas in the same period last year this increase was only 0.5 percent. The country’s industrial production has increased by 3 percent during the first half (April-September) of the financial year 2025-26, while in the first half of 2024-25 the growth was 4.1 percent.

On the other hand, Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal will hold an important meeting with the exporters’ community here on Wednesday. In this meeting, measures to further increase the country’s exports will be discussed. The country’s exports have increased by 6.74 percent to reach 36.38 billion dollars in September. This meeting is taking place at a time when India’s exports to its largest trading partner America declined by about 12 percent to $5.46 billion last month.

If there is any confusion in your mind about the country’s industrial strength and the direction of employment, then the time has come to remove it. Annual Survey of Industries – ASI, 2023-24, released through the Ministry of Statistics and Program Implementation of the Government of India (MOSPI), has made it clear that in the last one year, there has been a tremendous increase in the manufacturing of the country i.e. manufacturing sector. This increase has been seen at all three levels employment, capital and production. This survey not only suggests how many jobs have increased, but also makes it clear which states and Industries have seen the economic progress of the country, so let us know which sector people got bumper jobs.

Tremendous increase in employment

In the year 2023-24, there was an increase of 5.9 percent in total employment in industrial sectors. Last year i.e. in 2022-23, this figure was 1.8 crore, which has now increased to more than 1.9 crore. This is an indication that recovery in Industries is intensifying and new jobs are becoming new opportunities. If we talk about the last 10 years i.e. from 2014-15 to 2023-24, then there are more than 57 lakh new jobs during this period, which is a big step towards India’s economic strength and employment. However, not only jobs, but also in terms of investment, there has been a tremendous change in the industrial sector. In 2023-24, the total invest capital was Rs 68 lakh crore, which is much higher than Rs 61 lakh crore in the previous year (2022-23). It indicates the introduction of technical progress and new projects in the capital investment industry.

In which sector people got bumper jobs?

There were some special sectors in manufacturing industries where most people have got jobs. The first food products in this are industry. Where 21.67 lakh people are employed, it became the largest employer, which has 11.1 percent stake in total employment. The highest number of factories in all industries are 16 percent in this sector. This is followed by textile industry. In which 17.14 lakh people got jobs, this is the second largest employer, which has 8.8 percent stake. Apart from this, bumper jobs were found in the basic metal industry. It has 15.23 lakh employees. It is at number three with 7.8 percent employment stake. Along with this, about 13.74 lakh people are working in automotive and trailer manufacturing. At the same time, 13.39 lakh people have got employment in the garment industry.

Which states are ahead in employment?

According to the ASI report, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh and Karnataka are among the five top states where the maximum employment was provided. These states have different stake in employment. For example, 15 percent in Tamil Nadu, 13 percent in Gujarat, 13 percent in Maharashtra, 8 percent in Uttar Pradesh, 6 percent in Karnataka and 45 percent including all other states, it also shows that South and West India are playing leading roles in industry growth and employment.

Manufacturing sector PMI June: In June, the manufacturing sector of the country saw a wonderful boom. On the one hand, despite the battle between American tariff and Iran-Israel on the other side, the factory activity reached 14 months high level because this month there has been a wonderful bounce in business with other countries.

According to Moneycontrol report, Chief India Economist Pranjul Bhandari at HSBC said, “The PMI of India’s manufacturing sector has reached fourteen months high level 58.4 in June. That is, if the demand for things increased, then work on new orders has been done fast and people also got employment.

HSBC India Manufacturing Purchasing Manager Index (PMI) increased from 57.6 to 58.4 in May, the third month of the strong performance of this sector this year. The vision of the quarter has also been Najita positive as the average PMI reading in the June quarter has increased from 57.4 to 57.4, which indicates growing production and domestic demand in factories.

What is PMI index?

Let us know that PMI manufacturing sector activity is revealed. This is an index in which data is collected on things like new orders, production, delivery, employment and investment to suppliers. If the PMI is above 50, it means that the scope of the manufacturing sector is increasing, 50 is the meaning of the situation and below 50, then it means its scope is decreasing, the factory activity is decreasing.

This sector is moving forward by fighting challenges

The most important thing is that this boom in the manufacturing sector has come at a time when India is facing American tariff for the third consecutive month. That is, by dealing with all the challenges, this sector is moving fast. HSBC said, the sector has gained momentum in June due to growth in export of exports. This has also given a boost to employment.

However, the picture looks slow on the industrial output front. According to the Industrial Production Index (IIP), the overall industrial activity in May has come to a nine -month low of 1.2 per cent, which is the result of the blockage in electricity generation and mining due to heavy rains.
