In Maharashtra, a clarification has been presented once again over the dispute arising over Maratha reservation. Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde clearly stated clearly that the process of giving a certificate of Kunbi caste to the eligible people of the Maratha community has only been simplified and there is no question of any new reservation decision. He said that the OBC class will not suffer any kind of damage from this mandate (GR). This statement has come amid the displeasure and controversy of OBC leaders.

Controversy over GR and resentment of Bhujbal

Minister of State Chhagan Bhujbal had called a meeting of OBC leaders, objecting to GR. He argued that this step could affect the rights of the OBC community. On this, Shinde made it clear that Bhujbal has already been assured that the mandate will not affect the interests of the OBC and his reservation quota. The government has simplified only the process of distribution of certificates.

Shinde said that since 2012 there is a provision to issue a clan certificate, the government has simplified the process of implementing it only.

Chhagan Bhujbal is angry with the government order to give the status of Kunbi to the Marathas for reservation. Maratha Reservation Movement activist Manoj Jarage on Tuesday has said that after the government proposal (GR) to issue the Kunbi (OBC) caste certificate, the members of their community have said to get the benefit of reservation.

Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader Chhagan Bhujbal said on Wednesday evening that he would knock the court against GR. He said, “OBC leaders suspect GR … Who won after Jarang’s movement. We are taking legal opinions about whether the government is authorized to change the caste of the people.”

The issue of Maratha reservation in Maharashtra is once again gaining momentum. The state government has extended the tenure of the Geniology Committee constituted under the chairmanship of the Tehsildar at the tehsil level to issue caste certificate and caste validity certificate for Maratha society to 30 June 2026.

This committee tests the eligibility of eligible persons associated with Kunbi and Maratha-Kunbi caste. An order has been issued in this regard by the Department of Social Justice and Special Assistance. State Social Justice Minister Sanjay Shirsat gave information about this on 30 August.

Role of Geniology Committee

The Maharashtra government formed the ‘Justice Sandeep Shinde Samiti’ in the year 2023, which is also commonly known as the Geniology Committee. The main function of this committee is to investigate historical and lineage -based relations between the Maratha community and the Kunbi caste.

The committee determines which people can be given the benefit of reservation of Kunbi (OBC) category based on documents and historical records. In this way, the committee plays an important role in connecting the Maratha society with reservation.

Reservation demand for Maratha society

Please tell that the Maratha community has been demanding reservation for a long time. The society argues that their ancestors are basically associated with the farming class, ie Kunbi. The committee is working to confirm this relationship in historical and government records.
