‘Speak Marathi, Varna ..’, language conflict on seat in local train, watch video

The controversy over a minor seat in Mumbai’s local train has now become a big linguistic issue. On Friday (July 18), in a female compartment of the Central Line on the evening, a woman told another woman – “If you want to live in Mumbai, speak Marathi, otherwise get out”.

The incident happened when the train was packed with the crowd. During this time there was an argument among women. This incident video is now becoming increasingly viral on social media.

What is in viral video?

It was seen in the video that 6 to 7 women were arguing for one seat. In the midst of the debate, a woman commented on not speaking Marathi on another woman, which caught the matter.

Shortly, other women also started participating in the debate. After this incident, Railway Protection Force (RPF) and Government Railway Police (GRP) have started investigating the case. Officials said that this matter has now become a matter of social and linguistic harmony.

Language dispute depth once again

This incident has again given air to the language politics going on in Maharashtra. Recently, there have been many cases of Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) activists attacking non-Marathi speakers. This week, a shopkeeper was beaten up with WhatsApp status in Vikhroli, Mumbai. The shopkeeper was forced to publicly apologize.

Apart from this, on 1 July, a street food vendor was slapped in Marathi in Thane for not talking in Marathi. The migrant auto driver was publicly beaten in Palghar, including the Shiv Sena workers of the MNS and Uddhav Thackeray faction.

Mumbai businessman Sushil Kedia’s office was also vandalized because he had talked about not learning Marathi. The video of this incident has also gone viral, in which 5 to 6 people were seen throwing bricks in their office.

A security personnel tried to stop them, but the attackers did not stop even to vacate the bag. The businessman later released apologies. Such cases have once again raised the ongoing tension regarding the language and identity of Maharashtra.

Maharashtra: Raj Thackeray warns CM Devendra Fadnavis, ‘… will shut down schools’

In a public meeting held on Friday in Meera-Bhayander, Maharashtra, Maharashtra Navnirman Sena Chief Raj Thackeray said in clear terms that if the state government tries to make Hindi compulsory from the first grade, MNS will not back down from closing the school.

He warned Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis directly and said that no attempt to impose Hindi in Maharashtra will be tolerated. This statement has come at a time when the dispute in the state over the triple policy is deepening.

Raj Thackeray said that efforts are being made to impose Hindi in place of Marathi. He alleged that this is an “experiment”, so that Mumbai could be gradually connected to Gujarat. According to him, Hindi is just 200 years old language, while the history of Marathi is 2,500 to 3,000 years old.

Raj Thackeray lashed out at the committee constituted by Devendra Fadnavis and said that even before the government had tried, MNS had closed their shops.

Recently, MNS workers assaulted a shopkeeper, who refused to talk in Marathi. Two orders of the BJP government, in which it was a matter of making Hindi compulsory from the first, has been withdrawn after the protest. But Chief Minister Fadnavis again said that the Trishag policy will be implemented, but the committee will decide to decide the class. On this, Thackeray said, “If the government imposes Hindi again, we will close the school.”

Palghar: UP’s auto driver said ‘I will speak Hindi’, then something happened that apologizes

The language dispute has once again taken a fierce form in Maharashtra. This time the case is in Palghar district where a migrant auto-rickshaw driver at Virar station was publicly beaten by Shiv Sena (UBT) and Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) workers and forced him to forcibly apologize.

The incident came out after a video went viral, in which the driver insisted on talking in Hindi and said, “I will speak Hindi.” Angry activists beat him up, considering this statement an insult to Marathi language and cultural symbols.

It is being told that the dispute started a few days ago when a person from Uttar Pradesh, Bhavesh Padolia, and the said driver had a debate about not talking in Marathi. In the viral video, the driver was seen answering in Bhojpuri and Hindi, which many local organizations considered an insult to Marathi Asmita.

According to the news channel NDTV, on Saturday (July 12), supporters of Shiv Sena (UBT) and MNS surrounded the driver near Virar railway station. Many people, including the women present there, slapped her and publicly apologized.

Confirming the incident, Virar city head of Shiv Sena (UBT), Uday Jadhav, said, “If someone insults Marathi language, Maharashtra or Marathi manush, he will get a reply in Shiv Sena style. We have taught him a lesson by apologizing to that auto driver.” Jadhav also claimed that the auto driver had made derogatory remarks about Maharashtra and Marathi, which could not be tolerated in any form.

No police complaint has been filed on this incident yet. The Palghar police say that viral video is being watched and the facts are being investigated, but no formal complaint has been received from any side yet.

Significantly, this incident is a recent case of increasing tension over language dispute in the state. Earlier on 1 July, a street food vendor in Thane was beaten by MNS workers for not talking in Marathi. Even after this, many organizations had protested. Now this issue is not only increasing social stress, but is also becoming a center of political debate regarding education policy and linguistic identity.

Leader of Opposition in the Legislative Council Ambadas Danve and party leader Milind Narvekar submitted a letter in this regard to Shiv Sena Shinde Gut Minister Shambhuraj Desai.

20% reservation for Marathi Manush in Mumbai- Shiv Sena UBT
Milind Narvekar has shared this letter on X. Posting, he said, “We demand that 20 percent houses should be reserved for Marathi Manush in Mumbai in every building.” According to PTI, earlier on Thursday (July 10), he asked in the Legislative Council whether any social organization had demanded a 50 percent house reserved for Marathi, and whether the government has taken any decision on it.

Responding to this, Deputy Chief Minister and Housing Minister Eknath Shinde told in written reply that his department has not received any letter in this regard.
