A surprising incident has come to light near the Gulf of San Sebastian on the southern coast of Argentina. 26 killer whales have been found dead here. This incident not only remains a mystery for scientists, but is also a big warning for the marine ecosystem.

According to scientists, this is the third time in history that such a large number of killer whales have been found dead together. Earlier in 1955, 17 whales were found dead at Paraparaumu Beach in New Zealand and in 2022, 9 whales were found dead in the Strait of Magellan. This time’s case is also special because all these were Type D killer whales, which are rarely seen in the world.

What have scientists found so far

According to the report of Independent, preliminary investigation has revealed that all these whales were of the same species and no external injury or signs of collision were found on their bodies. Scientists have taken biological samples to find out whether water pollution, temperature change or noise pollution is the cause. Many experts believe that changes in ocean temperature and magnetic field may have affected the whales’ navigation sense, causing them to get stuck on the shore.

Characteristics of Type D killer whales

Type D killer whales are counted among the rarest marine mammals in the world. They are identified by the white spots near their eyes, round head and small dorsal fin on their back. These whales usually live in cold areas of the Southern Ocean and hunt with their herds.

The most powerful predator of the sea

Killer whales, also known as orca, are the largest species of the dolphin family. These are the top predators of the sea and their food includes fishes, seals, penguins and sometimes even sharks. Their social structure is very strong. They hunt together like a pack of wolves. A group consists of up to 40 whales, which collectively surround their target.

alarm bell for marine balance

Experts say that such incidents are a sign of imbalance not only of whales but of the marine ecosystem. If the temperature, pollution or noise level increases in the depths of the sea, it can be fatal for these creatures, so scientists are very serious about this incident and have warned that if such incidents happen again and again, it will have a deep impact on marine biodiversity.

There is a “brown strip” spread in the middle of the ocean which is visible even from space. It sounds strange, but this is not a road, but a plant floating in water. The name of this plant is Great Atlantic Sargassum Belt. It is a huge brown marine plant that has spread to such a large extent that it now looks like a long brown ribbon on the earth’s map. Scientists are surprised to see this because this plant is now about 8,850 kilometers long and 37.5 million tonnes heavy. That means it has covered an area as big as America.

What is the Great Atlantic Sargassum Belt that is going viral on social media?

Sargassum is a type of brown colored sea plant or algae. Earlier it was found only in the Sargasso Sea, which is in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. But now this plant has spread rapidly from West Africa to the Gulf of Mexico. Scientists saw its first major expansion in 2011. At that time it was a small group, but now it has spread throughout the ocean. Scientists say that this plant is spreading rapidly because the elements called nitrogen and phosphorus have increased in the sea water. These elements mostly reach the sea by flowing from fields and dirty water (sewage) of cities. Due to this, the plants get a lot of “fertilizer” and they start growing faster. This is the reason why the Sargassum belt is no longer under control.

This belt is as dangerous as it is beautiful.

This belt serves as home for many fishes, prawns, turtles and eels of the sea. These sea creatures hide among it and also use it for their food. That means, in a way, it has become a floating forest of the sea. But, its disadvantages are also very big. When this belt reaches the sea shore, it makes the beaches dirty. This causes problems for tourism, fishing, and even power plants (nuclear plants).

Users were also surprised

When its pictures went viral on social media and people came to know that something like this had spread in the ocean, they were surprised. Users expressed surprise and said that if such a plant is spreading in water, then there is definitely something special in it. One user wrote… I am surprised to see it, I would like to see it with my own eyes. Another user wrote…The magic of nature is amazing, it can show anything.
