A pregnant woman dies every two minutes in the world. This information was given by the World Health Organization i.e. WHO in a report, which told that a pregnant woman lost her life every two minutes during 2023. This figure is shocking, as about 2.60 lakh women died during or later in 2023 at the global level during pregnancy and delivery. However, between 2000 and 2023, there has been a decrease of 40 percent in maternal mortality (Maternal Mortality Ratio – MMR). Let us know why women lose their lives during pregnancy and delivery?

What is maternal death?

According to the WHO, maternal death is the death of a woman who loses her life in 42 days during pregnancy, at the time of delivery or after delivery. These cases belong to pregnancy or management. At the same time, the American College of Obstatocians and Gynecologists (ACOG) also see maternal deaths in many cases by linking the death in the period after one year of pregnancy. Maternal mortality rate (MMR) shows the number of maternal deaths per 1,00,000 living births. Global MMR 197 per 1,00,000 living births in 2023, which was 346 in low -income countries and 10 in high income countries.

What causes pregnant women to lose their lives?

Hemorrhage: Postpartum hemorrhage is the biggest cause of maternal death after delivery. Such cases are found more in developing countries like India-Pakistan. According to WHO, 1,14,000 women died in 1990 due to bleeding, which fell to 47,000 by 2021. However, this is still the main cause of maternal death at global level.

Hypertensive disorders: High blood pressure disorders such as preclampsia and eclampsia are the leading causes of death in pregnant women. These disorders can damage the brain, kidney and other organs.

Mental Health Conditions: Mental health conditions such as depression, anxiety and postpartum depression are the main causes of maternal death. Experts say that there is a need to increase the mental health screening of women after pregnant and delivery.

Infections: Infections such as pregnancy or after delivery are another major cause of maternal death. Inadequate cleaning, lack of skilled health workers and limited access to antibiotics increase this danger.

Cardiovascular Conditions: Heart disease and cardiomyopathy (weak heart muscle) are among the main causes of maternal death. Changes in the body during pregnancy can increase pressure on the heart due to increase in blood amounts.

How can maternal mortality rate reduce?

According to experts, the hazards can be identified and resolved by regular examination during pregnancy. At the same time, the presence of trend doctors during delivery can reduce maternal mortality rate. Problems can be overcome by giving information about the dangers coming to pregnant women and their families.

SDG India Progress: The life of mother and child in India has become more secure than before. Due to the efforts of the government, better treatment and increasing awareness of the people, now the situation has improved much more than before. The new government report states that in the last few years, the data of deaths in hospitals, free treatment and care of children, has now steadily declined. India has now joined those countries which are improving this direction at a high speed from the world.

What the new report says

According to the Sample Registration System (SRS) report 2021 released by the Registrar General on 7 May 2025, in 2014–16, in every 1 lakh delivery in the country, where 130 women were killed earlier, 2019–21 This figure has come down to 93. That is, there has been a tremendous improvement in it.

A huge decrease in children’s deaths

1. According to the report, not only the mothers, but the life of young children has also become more secure than before. The death of children younger than 1 year on every 1000 was 39 in 2014, now it has come down to 27.

2. In a few days of birth, the figure of children who came to know was 26, now 19 is left.

3. Children under five years of age died in 45 in 2014, now only 31 are left.

4. The average figure (TFR) of childbirth (TFR) has now come to 2.0.

5. The number of girls at birth has also improved. Earlier it was 899 and now it has come to 913.

Which states are at the forefront

The situation has become much better in some state. 8 states like Kerala (20), Maharashtra (38), Tamil Nadu (49) have already completed the target. The deaths of young children in 12 states and union territory are now less than the fixed limit. The deaths of newborns in 6 states and UTS have also reduced greatly. Since 1990, India has improved more than 80% in terms of saving the lives of mother and children, while the average of the whole world is only 48%. That is, India’s speed is faster than the rest of the world.

Big role of government schemes

This improvement has not happened in India, there are many schemes of the government behind this, these include Ayushman Bharat Yojana, special facilities for pregnant women and infrastructure for better treatment. They have had a lot of impact.

Ayushman Bharat Yojana- Every family gets treatment up to Rs 5 lakh every year.

Special facility for pregnant women- delivery, medicines, tests, nutrition help in the hospital … All this is being given free.

Infrastructure for better treatment- In many places, now special hospitals, mother-child care units, waiting rooms, HDU/ICU and newborn children have been created.

Awareness is increasing

According to the report, now women and families have become more aware about treatment in hospital. Government facilities are reaching more people and its effect is clearly visible in the figures. If India continues at this speed, then soon the day will come when the fear of delivery and the death of children can be completely eliminated.

Maternal Mortality in India : In the last 20 years, there has been a decrease of 40% in cases of pregnancy, delivery or a few days later. This is a good news and its credit goes to better health services. But a new report has expressed concern that if steps are not taken on time, this improvement may stop.

The UN Agency (UNFPA) for the United Nations Children Fund (UNICEF), WHO and Sexual and Reproductive Health Affairs (UNFPA) has released a report on 7 April. According to this, there has been a decrease of 40 percent during pregnancy or delivery from 2000 to 2023 or in cases of differences of 42 days.

It has been said in the report that this situation has improved due to better health services, although since 2016 its speed has started slowing down. It is estimated that in 2023, 2.60 lakh women lost their lives during pregnancy and complications during delivery, which is a maternity death in about two minutes.

This includes deaths related to delivery or pregnancy in maternal death. The report stated that maternal mortality in Nigeria is the highest in the world. In India, in 2023, 19,000 pregnant women died (Pregnancy Complications Death), which is 7.2% of the whole world. The second number is from India.
