According to the scriptures, people who consume rice on Ekadashi are called hell. On this day, rice is considered equal to eating food.

According to a legend, in ancient times, Maharishi Medha despised the beggar who came in a yagna, this made Mother Durga angry. Maharishi Medha renounced his body to avoid mother’s wrath and atonement and excerpts of the body got absorbed in the earth.

Pleased with this atonement of Maharishi, Mother Durga blessed her that her parts would grow from the earth as grain. It is said that on the day of Ekadashi, excerpts in the earth of Maharishi originated in the form of rice and barley.

It is religious belief that eating rice on Ekadashi is equal to eating the flesh of Maharishi Medha. The one who does so is found in the next birth in the well.

According to strength on this day, food, clothes, water, shoe, asana, fan, umbrella and fruit etc. should be donated.
