NEET UG 2026 Result: After the release of NEET UG results by the National Testing Agency (NTA), now all eyes are on admission in medical colleges. However, qualifying NEET and getting an MBBS seat in a government college are two different things. The number of MBBS seats across the country is limited, while the number of eligible candidates is many times more.

According to the seat matrix, at present there are a total of 1,36,339 MBBS seats in the country. Of these, there are more than 63 thousand government and more than 73 thousand private medical college seats. This means that almost only one out of every eight qualified candidates gets an MBBS seat, while the competition for government medical colleges becomes even tougher. In such a situation, the big question is, where are the chances of getting an MBBS seat at a lower rank and what the counseling trades of previous years say.

Where can one get MBBS at lower rank?

Even if your rank has not reached the cut-off of a top government medical college, hope is not completely lost. On the basis of previous years counselling, there are many government medical colleges where MBBS seats have been allotted even at lower ranks. These colleges include Government Medical College of Punjab, Government Medical College Latur of Maharashtra, Shaheed Hasan Khan Mewati Government Medical College of Haryana, Late Baliram Kashyap Memorial Government Medical College of Chhattisgarh and Government Medical College Firozabad of Uttar Pradesh, where there is a record of getting MBBS seat despite having low rank.

If you don’t get this option in government college then also

If you do not get a seat in a government medical college, then many private medical colleges also provide MBBS facility at low fees. These include the names of institutes like Shadana Institute of Medical Sciences, SIMSRC Bangalore and Babasaheb Ambedkar Medical College and Hospital New Delhi. However, private college fees may vary according to different states and institutes.

What is the score required for government MBBS seat?

Mere qualifying in NEET UG 2026 does not guarantee admission in medical college. For this, the All India Rank of the candidate, category, counseling round, availability of seats and reservation policy of the state play a big role. According to the current counseling trend, for general category candidates, more than 610 marks are considered safe for government MBBS seats. At the same time, 590 plus marks for OBC candidates, 600 plus for EWS, two 550 plus marks for SC and 490 plus marks for ST category are considered better, although the final cut off will be clear only after counselling.

What score is required for AIIMS and top medical colleges?

Competition for admission in the top medical institutes of the country is highest. Based on the trend of previous years, around 690 to 705 or more marks may be required for AIIMS New Delhi. Whereas for other major AIIMS like Bhopal, Jodhpur, Rishikesh and Bhubaneswar, around 660 to 680 marks are considered competitive. Even in institutes like JIPMER Puducherry and Maulana Azad Medical College, candidates with more than 670 marks generally have a strong position.
