The National Medical Commission has given strict instructions to medical colleges, institutes and universities across the country that MBBS fees should be charged only for the fixed period of study. Charging fees for a period of one year of internship will be considered against the rules.

Many complaints reached the Commission that some medical colleges are charging fees from students in the name of full 5 or 5.5 year courses. To this they also add a mandatory internship of one year, during which there is no classroom study. This order has been issued to stop this.

According to the rules, the educational duration of MBBS course is 4.5 years i.e. 54 months. This is followed by a one-year compulsory rotating medical internship (CRMI). This is the time for training, not for studying. Therefore, it is not right to include this period in the fees.

The Commission has clearly said that where there is no education, there are no fees. The students should be charged the same fees that they have to pay for studies, labs, classrooms and teaching facilities. During internship, students undergo hospital training, learning to work with patients, but it is not part of classroom-based education. It has also been said in the notice that charging more fees than the stipulated academic time is like taking money without studying. The fee structure should be clear, understandable and according to the facilities.

Strict action will be taken

NMC has written in its order that all medical colleges should follow this rule and correct their fee structure immediately. If any college charges additional fees in the name of internship, strict action will be taken against it.

This decision has brought relief to thousands of students who spend huge amount for medical studies. Many families fulfill their dream of making their children doctors with the help of their savings and loans. In such a situation, the additional fees of one year became a big problem for them.

The Commission has also said that fees should always be reasonable and should be decided according to the education and facilities provided to the students. Transparency is very important, so that students and parents can clearly understand what they are paying fees for.

Commission gave strict instructions

Now all medical colleges will have to change their rules. They have to ensure that the fees are limited to only 4.5 years of studies. No educational fees should be charged from students during internship.

The Commission has also warned that if any institution does not follow this order, legal and administrative action will be taken against it. That is, this time the instructions have not come just as advice, but in the form of a strict order.
