MBBS studies prove to be very expensive for lakhs of students who dream of becoming doctors. High fees and other expenses of private medical colleges sometimes become a big challenge for financially weak students. However, the central and state governments run many scholarship schemes to help such students, through which the financial burden of studies can be reduced to a great extent.

Under government scholarship, eligible students are provided financial assistance for tuition fees, living expenses and other educational needs. This assistance is determined on the basis of the student’s educational qualification, social class and family income. In many schemes, students can get assistance ranging from Rs 20 thousand to Rs 1 lakh or more every year.

PM-USP Scholarship Scheme

Prime Minister Higher Education Promotion (PM-USP) Scheme is included in the major schemes of the Central Government. Under this scheme, students who have excelled in class 12th are provided financial assistance for higher education. The benefit of this scholarship is available to those students who have secured 80 percent or more marks in 12th and whose family annual income is less than Rs 4.5 lakh. Eligible students can be given assistance up to Rs 20 thousand annually.

Central Sector Scholarship Scheme

Central Sector Scholarship Scheme is also an important scheme for meritorious students. Under this, financial assistance is given to eligible students studying in colleges and universities. To avail the benefits of this scheme, the educational record of the student should be good and the annual income of the family should be within the prescribed limit. Scholarship up to Rs 20 thousand is provided to selected students every year.

Post Matric Scholarship

Post Matric Scholarship Scheme is operated for Scheduled Caste (SC), Scheduled Tribe (ST) and Other Backward Class (OBC) students. This scheme is run by the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment and the Ministry of Tribal Affairs. Under this scheme, tuition fees, examination fees and other educational expenses of the students are covered. Apart from this, maintenance allowance is also given to the students, so that they can meet other expenses incurred during their studies.

Prime Minister Scholarship Scheme

Prime Minister’s Scholarship Scheme is run exclusively for Ex-Servicemen and dependent children and widows of Indian Coast Guard personnel. Under this scheme, eligible students are given a scholarship of Rs 2,500 to Rs 3,000 every month. Its objective is to encourage children from military families for higher education.
