Social activist and famous educationist Sonam Wangchuk started an indefinite hunger strike at Jantar Mantar in Delhi on 28 June 2026. Due to this, Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) got huge public support and strong base. However, now on the 27th day (23 July) he has ended his fast.

Union Ministers JP Nadda and Jitendra Singh reached Medanta Hospital in Gurugram on Thursday, where JP Nadda broke the fast of Sonam Wangchuk by giving her juice. After this, Wangchuk issued a video message on Friday morning saying that he was in continuous talks with the government for the last two days. During this, their three main demands were discussed and after getting written assurance, they decided to end the hunger strike.

Wangchuk ended his fast after agreeing to the three demands. In them, the government has assured in writing not to register a case against the protesting students, to discuss in the Parliament the issue of paper leak and fixing accountability in the examination system and to give appropriate compensation to the families of the students who committed suicide.

What were Sonam Wangchuk’s demands?
Sonam Wangchuk joined the Cockroach Party movement on June 28, when she started an indefinite hunger strike at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar in support of students against the NEET-UG paper leak and alleged irregularities in the education system. Sonam Wangchuk’s demands were that Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan should resign, NEET paper leak and irregularities in the examination should be investigated impartially and action should be taken against the culprits. Apart from this, accountability should be fixed by improving the education system. Apart from all this, compensation should be given to the families of the victims in cases of suicide of students related to paper leak.

Have done hunger strike before also
Let us tell you that this was not the first fast of Sonam Wangchuk. Earlier in March 2024, he had gone on a hunger strike for 21 days demanding inclusion of Ladakh in the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution, full statehood, employment security for local youth and environmental protection. After this, in September 2024, he set out on the Delhi Chalo Padyatra, but he was detained on the Delhi border.
