NEET Re-Exam 2026: The re-exam of the country’s biggest medical entrance examination NEET-UG 2026 is being conducted today on June 21, 2026, in which more than 22.79 lakh students are participating. After the paper leak controversy, it has become a big challenge for NTA to conduct the examination in a completely fair and safe manner. For this reason, before the examination, security arrangements were checked by conducting mock drills across the country. The teams of police, administration and NTA are busy ensuring that no incidents like cheating, fraud or paper leak take place during the examination.

A total of 1.29 lakh MBBS seats are available in medical colleges across the country, due to which the competition is very tough. According to statistics, on an average 18 students are vying for an MBBS seat, making the path to becoming a doctor more challenging than before. In such a situation, let us know how difficult it is to become a doctor.

Examination will be held in 565 cities, 22.79 lakh students will give the exam.

A total of more than 22.79 lakh students across the country have registered for NEET-UG 2026 re-exam. These include about 13.33 lakh girl students and 9.47 lakh boys. About 22.05 lakh candidates appeared in the first examination. This examination is being conducted in a total of 565 cities including 551 cities in India and 14 cities abroad. This examination, conducted on such a large scale, is considered one of the biggest medical admission examinations in the country.

Also read – NTA ready for NEET re-exam, deployed 6700 observers, 40 to 50 policemen at every center

How difficult is it to become a doctor?

According to career counseling experts, at present there are a total of 823 medical colleges in the country, where 1,29,603 MBBS seats are available. Of these, there are 63,160 seats in 450 government medical colleges, while 66,443 seats are available in 373 private and deemed medical colleges. However, most of the students try to get admission in government medical colleges due to low fees, due to which the competition is very high there. The competition for MBBS seats in NEET-UG 2026 is very tough.

If we look at the total of more than 22.79 lakh registered candidates and 1.29 lakh MBBS seats, on an average around 18 students are competing for one seat. At the same time, due to limited seats in government medical colleges and low fees, government colleges are the first choice of most of the students. This is the reason why competition for government MBBS seats becomes even more difficult, where on an average 36 candidates are vying for one seat.

Attempt Limit In NEET UG: After the ongoing controversy regarding NEET UG 2026 and cancellation of the examination, the National Testing Agency has now started preparing for major changes. In the coming time, age limit and attempt limit may be implemented in the medical entrance examination. This means that students can now get a chance to take NEET UG exam till the prescribed age and only a limited number of times.

The central government told the parliamentary committee on Thursday that former ISRO chief Dr. Major reforms will be made in the examination system based on the recommendations of the expert committee headed by Radhakrishnan. In its presentation before the Parliamentary Standing Committee headed by Congress MP Digvijay Singh, the NDA has put forward a roadmap of several long-term reforms.

Attempt limit may be implemented for the first time in NEET

At present, only the minimum age limit for students in NEET UG exam has been fixed at 17 years, there is no maximum age limit and students can appear for the exam any number of times. However, NTA is preparing to make changes in this system. The agency told the parliamentary committee that the number of attempts by candidates may be fixed in future. Along with this, implementation of maximum age limit is also being considered. It has not been clarified yet how many attempts the girl students will get and what will be the maximum age.

Focus on computer based and multi session examination

NTA told the committee that in the coming time, NEET UG examination can be conducted completely in computer based test i.e. CBT mode. Apart from this, work is also being done on multi-session and multi-stage examination system. Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan has already announced that preparations can be made to conduct NEET UG in CBT mode next year. At present, NTA has the capacity to conduct computer-based examination of about 1.5 lakh students in one shift, which has been targeted to be increased to 10 lakh next year.

Reforms increased after paper leak controversy

This time a big controversy has arisen regarding NEET UG exam 2026. More than 22 lakh students had appeared in the examination held on May 3. Later allegations were made that about 120 questions of the viral guess paper were matching the real exam. According to NTA, the agency received information about the alleged irregularities on May 7, after which the matter was referred to the central agencies on May 8 and the examination was canceled on May 12. Now the re-examination will be held on June 21, however, in the parliamentary committee meeting, NTA directly refused to consider it as a paper leak. The agency said that irregularities and malpractices came to light in the examination process, but it would not be correct to call it a complete paper leak. In the meeting, BJP MPs also objected to the use of the word paper leak. At the same time, opposition MPs raised the question that if the paper was not leaked then why did the examination have to be cancelled.

A big update has come out regarding the medical entrance exam NEET UG 2026. After confirming the paper leak, the National Testing Agency (NTA) has canceled the examination held on May 3. Now the re-exam will be conducted on 21 June 2026. With this decision, the entire schedule of medical admission has been pushed forward by about 1 to 2 months.

According to NTA, maintaining fairness of the examination is the top priority. For this reason it was decided to conduct the examination again. The agency has clarified that students will not need to apply again or deposit fees. Only the registration done earlier will remain valid.

Admit cards for re-exam will be issued by June 14. Students will be able to download them from the official website. Meanwhile, coaching institutes have also extended their revision batches till June, so that students can prepare again.

Counseling will be affected

Changing the date of examination will have a direct impact on the result and counselling. Whereas earlier the result was likely to be released in the first week of June, now the result is expected to be released in the end of June or the first week of July. After this, the counseling process of the Medical Counseling Committee (MCC) will start only after July.

According to reports, this delay will also affect the new session of medical colleges. Usually classes start in late July or early August, but this time the session is likely to start from late August or September.

Also read- Ishita Gupta of Bhadohi topped the district, got 96.6% marks, see toppers list

Exam will be held in CBT mode from next year

There is mixed reaction among students and parents regarding this decision. While on one hand the hope of fair examination has been raised, on the other hand the pressure of preparation has increased. Many students had planned admission in other courses, which may have to be stopped now. The Union Education Minister has said that in future the NEET exam will be conducted online (CBT mode), so that incidents like paper leaks can be prevented.

If the candidates face any kind of problem then they can contact the official email and phone number of the National Testing Agency. For problems related to examination, center or admit card, an email can be emailed to neet-ug@nta.ac.in. You can also contact on helpline numbers 011-40759000 and 011-69227700.

Now another big revelation has come to light in the NEET paper leak case related to Biwal family of Jamvaramgarh in Jaipur district of Rajasthan. The 12th marksheet of the student Rishi, for whom NEET paper is allegedly being bought, has raised many questions.

According to the information, Rishi had passed the 12th examination with second division and had got very less marks in many subjects. It is told that out of total 56 marks in the theory exam, he got only 9 marks in Physics, 15 marks in Chemistry and only 20 marks in Biology. He was able to pass the exam with the help of grace marks.

Question on transparency of examination system

Questions are being raised regarding this matter that if the alleged paper leak had not been revealed then it is possible that the same student would have got admission in a government medical college by scoring good marks in NEET. In such a situation, a poorly performing student would have been on the path to becoming a doctor. This case has raised concerns about the transparency of the examination system and the credibility of medical education. If ineligible students reach the medical college by wrong means then in future it will directly impact the health system and the safety of patients. Incidents like paper leak not only harm the fairness of the examination but also do great injustice to the hard-working students. Besides, this also weakens the society’s trust in the education system and competitive examinations.

Recently, after the major reduction in the cut-off marks of NEET-PG, the debate has intensified across the country. Questions began to arise among medical students, parents and health experts whether this decision would affect the quality of medical education. Many people expressed apprehension that getting admission in PG on low marks may affect the level of specialist doctors in future. Meanwhile, the Central Government clarified its stand in the Supreme Court and said that the purpose of NEET-PG is not to decide the minimum qualification of a student as a doctor. According to the government, the real eligibility to become a doctor is proved only after completing MBBS studies and internship. NEET-PG is only an entrance examination, which aims to prepare the merit list of candidates for limited postgraduate (MD/MS) seats.

Every candidate appearing for the NEET-PG exam is already a qualified doctor. He has completed 4.5 years of MBBS studies and after that he has also done one year of compulsory internship. To pass MBBS, students are required to score at least 50 percent marks in both theory and practical examinations. That means, even before appearing for NEET-PG, the candidates have already obtained the necessary medical training and qualifications.

What are the new cut-offs?
This time the cut-off of NEET PG has been kept very low. The cut-off for General and EWS categories has been fixed at 103 marks, while for General PWD candidates it is 90 marks. Whereas for SC, ST and Other Backward Class categories, the cut-off has been fixed at 40 marks. After this reduction in cut-off, now more students than before will be able to participate in the counseling process and will get the opportunity to get a postgraduate medical seat.

Why was the cut-off reduced?
The main reason given by the government behind reducing the cut-off is that a large number of postgraduate medical seats remained vacant every year. Despite about 70,000 seats being available, admission was not being done on all the seats, while more than two lakh students had appeared in the examination. The government says that medical seats are created from public resources, so leaving them vacant is harmful. For this reason, the cut-off was reduced so that more candidates can participate in counselling, seats do not remain vacant and the number of specialist doctors in the country can be increased.

Lakhs of students in the country dream of making a career in the medical field. It has been believed for a long time that to become a doctor, it is necessary to take Biology in 11th and 12th. If a student chose Maths (PCM) after 10th, then the path to the medical line was considered almost closed for him. For this reason, many students either chose Biology under pressure or later regretted that they took the wrong stream, but now this situation has changed.

National Medical Commission (NMC) has made a major change in the eligibility rules for NEET UG 2026. According to the new rules, now students studying Maths in 12th can also move ahead on the path of becoming doctors. This decision has brought relief to lakhs of students who had chosen PCM stream but now want to come into the medical field.

What is the new rule?

Earlier, for the medical entrance examination, it was necessary that the student had studied Biology as a main subject in class 11th and 12th. Students without Biology were not considered eligible to take the NEET exam. Now NMC has eased this condition. According to the new rule, if a student has studied Physics, Chemistry and Maths (PCM) in 12th, then he can pass Biology or Biotechnology as an additional subject from a recognized board, and after that he will be eligible to appear for the medical entrance examination, that is, now there is no need to repeat the entire 11th-12th with Biology. Just passing Biology as an additional subject will be enough.

How to become eligible for NEET?

For admission to medical course, it is necessary to pass NEET-UG. According to the new rule, if a student has passed Biology as an additional subject after 12th, then he can appear for the NEET exam. After successful in the examination, he can take admission in MBBS, BDS and other medical courses in medical colleges in India or abroad. With this, students preparing for engineering can also move towards medicine.

Changing stream made easy

This decision is especially beneficial for those students who had chosen PCM stream after 10th in haste, lack of information or due to family pressure. Earlier, if such students wanted to come into the medical field, they had to repeat the entire 11th and 12th with Biology. This would take him an extra year or two. Now by passing the examination of just one additional subject they can become eligible for medical. This will save both time and effort. Also, students can now keep both engineering and medical options open. Some necessary conditions for medical admission will still remain applicable. Like the minimum age of the student should be 17 years by 31st December of the year of admission.

How many marks are required?

The conditions related to 12th marks for appearing in NEET exam are also fixed. General category students should have at least 50 percent marks in Physics, Chemistry and Biology (PCB). This limit is 40 percent for OBC, SC and ST category students. Minimum 45 percent marks are required for Disabled (PwD) category. If Biology has been taken as an additional subject, its marks will also be added to the eligibility.

The recognition of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Institute of Medical Excellence (Medical College) located in Reasi district of Jammu and Kashmir has been canceled on charges of violating standards. This decision has been taken by the National Medical Commission (NMC), under which the permission to run MBBS course in this college has been canceled with immediate effect. The thing to note is that 50 MBBS seats were sanctioned in this college for the session 2025-26, but now there will be no new admission on these seats. Also, let us know what will happen to the students taking admission in this session?

What is the whole matter?

It is noteworthy that this college located in Kakaryal is associated with Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board. In September 2025, NMC had given it permission to start MBBS course with 50 seats. The Medical Assessment and Rating Board (MARB) of NMC conducted a surprise inspection of the college on January 2, 2026, which found several major deficiencies. In view of these shortcomings, permission was withdrawn from the college.

What shortcomings were found in the inspection?

It is being told that the biggest problem in the college was the shortage of teachers and doctors. There were 39 percent less teachers in the college than required. The shortage of tutors, demonstrators and senior resident doctors was up to 65 percent. A good medical college should have adequate staff so that the students get proper training, but here even the basic needs were not being met.

The number of patients is also very less

According to the rules, at least 400 patients should have come to the OPD of this college every day, of which the number was only 182. Apart from this, the hospital beds should have been 80 percent filled, but only 45 percent were filled. Even in ICU, only half the beds were being used. At the same time, only 25 cases of delivery were found, which is very less. In a training college, the patient load is necessary so that the students can get practical experience.

The condition of the library is also bad

It is being told that the college library had only half the books as required. There should have been 1500 books, instead only 744 books were found. There were only 2 medical journals, whereas there should have been 15. Many departments did not even have basic facilities like labs, research rooms, lecture rooms. At some places there were not separate wards for male and female patients. There was no room for small operations. Overall only 2 operation theaters were functioning. All these shortcomings were against the minimum standards of NMC.

What will happen to the students now?

The most important question is what will happen to the students taking admission in this session? NMC has clearly said that no student will lose his seat. The students enrolled in the 2025-26 session will be sent to other recognized medical colleges of Jammu and Kashmir as additional seats. This responsibility rests with the Health Department of the Union Territory Government. They will soon adjust the students in new colleges. With this, students’ education will continue without interruption.
