New york assisted death bill: The New York State Legislative Assembly passed an important bill on Monday (June 09, 2025), under which patients suffering from incurable disease will get legal permission to abolish their life through medicines.

This proposal will now be sent to the state governor Kathy Hachul for approval. According to the bill, if a person is struggling with an incurable disease and expresses this desire himself, then he will be able to take medicines to end life after the consent of two doctors. The supporters of the bill say that this law will give an option to those who want to take a final decision on their own and dignity. Bill’s proposer and Democratic state senator Brad Hyelman-Sigal said that there is a way to end the suffering.

Some leaders and organizations opposing the bill said that the state should not take steps in this direction. Republican Senator George Borrello said, “The state should not enact any law like approval of suicide. We should improve the quality of care in the last time of life, not to make a system to eliminate it.”

The proposal was passed in late April

The proposal was passed by the state assembly in late April. Under this law, such a seriously ill person, whom doctors have told that they can die within six months, will have to make written requests for the drug ending life.

The signature of two witnesses will be necessary on this request, so that it can be ensured that no pressure has been put on the patient. After this, this application will be valid only after the approval of the patient’s chief doctor and a consultant doctor.
