Canada-china relations: Canada has given a big blow to China. The Canadian government has issued an order asking a large Chinese company to close all the operations going on in the country. The Carney government has taken this step in view of national security.

Canadian Industry Minister Meloni Jolie said on Friday (June 27, 2025) that the government has ordered Chinese surveillance equipment company Hikavijan to stop working in Canada. He said that working in the country will be a threat to national security. Jolie said that this decision has been taken on the basis of information given by Canada’s security and intelligence agencies.

Hikvision on the radar of international investigative agencies

Hikvision has been on the radar of many international investigative agencies before. The US has already blacklisted the company and many questions have been raised on this in the European Union. It is alleged that the products of Hikvision have been used by the Chinese government in monitoring, human rights violations and even in the oppression of Uigar Muslims. This move of Canada becomes even more important in this context, as it is not just a technical restriction but also a diplomatic member that Canada gives a top priority to the safety of its digital borders.

Will it bring new stress in China-Canada relations?
Canada and China relations are already going through a critical phase. The arrest of Huawei, Michael Kovarig and Michael Spavor, Hong Kong Policy and Now Hikavjan sanctions have all become the cause of tension in the relationship between the two countries. Now it will have to be seen how Beijing reacts to this decision. China will probably call this move as ‘political motivated’ and ‘politics of technology’. This may further affect business and diplomatic dialogues. Apart from this, Canada has been accused of working on China in the country in the wrong and intelligence.
