FSSAI Advisory: Food safety regulator FSSAI has issued an important advisory regarding packaging of food items. FSSAI has directed all food business operators across the country to immediately stop using metal pins, wires or any such material in food items and their packaging.

Why was the advisory issued?

According to FSSAI, it has come to its notice that food business operators are using metal or stapler pins and wires to make decorative cakes and to close food packets, cake boxes, sweet boxes, snack pouches and takeaway food parcels.

Many cases have come to light where stapler pins were found stuck or embedded in cake and food packages. The regulator says that this poses a serious threat to food safety as these pins can be accidentally swallowed with food, which poses a great risk of injury and harm to health.

On which things will the instructions apply?

According to the advisory, this instruction will be applicable to all types of food items and packaging. This includes food parcels, takeaway meals, bakery products, cake boxes, sweet boxes and snack packets, meaning that now no businessman will be able to use metal pins or wires to seal, tie or pack any food item.

Action will be taken if rules are broken

FSSAI has clearly stated that appropriate punitive action will be taken against food business operators who do not follow the instructions as per the Food Safety and Standards Act 2006 and the rules made thereunder.

The aim is to protect consumers

FSSAI says that this step has been taken in the interest of public health and food safety. The purpose is to protect consumers from potential injury or health risks caused by metal pins used in packaging.
