This mysterious phenomenon is called Catatumbo Lightning. The place where lightning strikes frequently in Venezuela is near Lake Maracaibo located in Zulia state. This is where the Catatumbo River joins the lake. According to reports, this area experiences heavy stormy conditions for about 260 days of the year, which makes it completely different from other places. Why has this mystery not been solved yet?

The first attempt to understand the mystery of frequent lightning strikes in Venezuela was made in the 1960s. In initial research, it was estimated that the minerals present under the ground and the elements present in the rocks were attracting electricity. Later, in another research, the reason was said to be the abundance of methane gas in this area. However, none of these reasons has been completely proven. This is the reason that even today scientists have not been able to explain clearly why lightning strikes here so frequently.
