An earthquake of 6.5 magnitude was felt in Mexico on Friday (2 December 2025). The epicenter of the earthquake was near San Marcos in Guerrero state. When the earthquake occurred, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum was giving her first press briefing of the new year. The earthquake was so strong that President Claudia Sheinbaum and the people present there immediately ran out of the building.

President held press briefing after earthquake

After some time, President Claudia Sheinbaum resumed her press briefing. He told, ‘I spoke to Guerrero Governor Evelyn Salgado. No report of any serious damage has been received so far. As soon as the earthquake began, residents and tourists of Mexico City and Acapulco ran into the streets.

According to the report of news agency Associated Press, the earthquake in Mexico City was so strong that tall buildings started shaking and people started running out of the buildings towards open spaces.

Metro started shaking due to earthquake

A major train accident has occurred in Mexico. Officials said on Sunday (December 28) that at least 13 people have died due to the derailment of an interoceanic train in the country’s Oaxaca state.

According to the report of news agency Reuters, Mexico’s Navy said that there were a total of 250 people on board the train, including 9 crew members and 241 passengers. Of these, the lives of 193 people are said to be safe, while 98 people are injured, out of which 36 are being given medical aid. Officials said that the accident happened between Chiwela and Nizanda cities.

What did the President of Mexico say
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said on the social media platform X that the condition of the five injured people was serious and said that senior officials had been sent to the scene to help the families of those killed. Mexico’s Attorney General Ernestina Godoy Ramos said in a post on social media that the Attorney General’s Office has started an investigation into the incident.

The interoceanic train was inaugurated by former President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador in the year 2023. It is part of the larger Interoceanic Corridor project and was designed to modernize the rail link across the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, connecting Mexico’s Pacific port of Salina Cruz with Coatzacoalcos on the Gulf Coast.

This train is special for Mexico
The Mexican government has tried to develop this isthmus as a strategic trade corridor. The aim was to create a route that could compete with the Panama Canal by expanding ports, railways and industrial infrastructure. Let us tell you that this train is also part of a broader effort to expand passenger and freight rail in southern Mexico and promote economic development in the region.

Following the footsteps of America, another country in the world has announced to impose tariffs on India. This country is America’s neighbor, whose name is Mexico. Mexico has decided to impose 50 percent tariff on goods from India, China and other Asian countries from January 1, 2026. However, if we talk about the currency of Mexico, the currency here is called Peso.

According to the report of Vice.com, the value of 1 peso is 5.05 rupees against Indian currency. In this way, if an Indian earns Rs 20,000 by going to Mexico, then after coming to India its value will become Rs 1 lakh 936. It is clear from this comparison that the Mexican peso is more valuable than the Indian rupee.

The peso was first adopted as the official currency of Mexico in the year 1863. Today this currency is considered a strong currency not only in Mexico but also in the international market. Apart from Mexico, the name of currency in many countries is Peso. These major countries include Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Philippines and Uruguay. However, the peso of all these countries is different from each other and their value is also different.

Which peso notes are used in Mexico?

In Mexico the peso is divided into 100 centavos. There are a total of 6 types of notes in circulation, which are 20, 50, 100, 200, 500 and 1000 pesos. These notes are issued by Mexico’s central bank, Banco de Mexico. Mexico’s economy is considered a developing mixed economy. Globally, this country is the 13th largest economy in the world. This country is known for its strong export, automobile, oil, manufacturing and tourism sectors. This is the reason why the stability and strength of the Mexican peso remains.

A major plane accident has come to light in the central part of Mexico. At least seven people died when a small private plane crashed while attempting an emergency landing. After the accident, there was chaos in the area and the administration immediately started relief and rescue operations.

Where and how did the accident happen?
According to Mexico State Civil Protection Coordinator Adrien Hernandez, the accident occurred in San Mateo Atenco, an industrial area located about five kilometers from Toluca Airport and about 50 kilometers west of Mexico City. The plane was coming from Acapulco.

trying to get on the football field
According to the information, the plane was trying to make an emergency landing on a nearby football field. During this time he collided with the iron roof of a commercial building located nearby. After the collision, a massive fire broke out in the plane, which engulfed the surrounding area as well.

how many people were in the plane
Hernandez said that there were a total of eight passengers and two crew members on board the plane. However, only seven bodies could be recovered several hours after the accident. Search and identification of other people is ongoing.

There was chaos due to fire
Immediately after the accident, fire brigade and rescue teams reached the spot and brought the fire under control. Ana Muniz, mayor of San Mateo Atenco, told Milenio Television that due to the seriousness of the fire, about 130 people in the surrounding areas were evacuated to safe places.

The area was sealed
The administration has surrounded the entire area as a precautionary measure. There is an atmosphere of panic among the local people and security has been increased around the incident site. Officials say that investigation into the cause of the accident has been started. The real reason why the plane crashed due to technical fault or any other reason will become clear only after the investigation is completed.

Tariff: America has imposed 50 percent tariff on the import of Indian goods. Recently, Mexico also announced to impose 50 percent tariff on the export of Indian products to the country. Ever since President Donald Trump was elected President of America for the second time, the word tariff has started being used more. Trump has imposed tariffs on India, Brazil and even the European Union. Now the question arises that what is this tariff after all?

What is tariff?

Tariff is a type of tax, which the government imposes on goods and services coming from foreign countries. For example, if a company in our country brings shoes made in a foreign company, then it will have to pay tariff to the government, due to which the shoes will become more expensive in the local market. Trump is not the first person to impose tariffs on imports from various countries, rather tariffs have been in place for centuries. It has been used to promote local trade and generate revenue.

Tariff is a border fee or tax, which the government imposes on goods imported from other countries. Companies importing goods have to pay this tax at the border. It is the same with service providers also. Obviously, if the expenditure on imports will be high, then things will automatically become expensive in the local market. There are two types of tariffs:-

Specific Tariff- A fixed price per unit imported, such as $500 for each automobile.
Ad-Valorem Tariff- A portion of the price of the item, such as 5 percent of the price of an item.

Why does the government impose tariffs?

Tariffs are a way for the government to generate revenue. Another advantage of this is that it enables local companies to compete with foreign companies. We can understand this with an example – suppose Chinese companies are manufacturing mobile phones and exporting them on a large scale to sell in America. In order to make profit, if the company will sell its smartphone with new technology at a cheaper rate, then obviously people will buy it more.

This will cause loss to American companies and the government’s revenue will also reduce. To deal with this, the government takes the help of tariffs so that domestic companies can be saved and the revenue also does not reduce. With the imposition of tariff, Chinese phones will become expensive in the American markets. Due to this, people will go back to local companies, which will give a boost to the companies there.

India is among the countries that impose highest tariffs

Generally, all countries impose tariffs, the only difference is the rate. However, India is one of the countries that imposes the highest tariffs compared to other countries. After Trump became President again, India removed 150 percent, 125 percent and 100 percent tariff rates. Earlier India used to impose 125 percent tariff on the import of luxury cars, which has now been reduced to 70 percent and now this is the highest rate of tariff in India. In the year 2025, the tariff rates in India have reduced by an average of 10.65 percent.

After Mexico’s decision to increase the tariff on some Indian products by 50 percent, the Indian government has adopted a tough stance. The government has said that it reserves the right to take ‘necessary decisions’ to protect the interests of Indian exporters. A government official said on Saturday, ‘India reserves the right to take necessary steps to protect the interests of Indian exporters, and will continue to try to find a solution through negotiations.’

Beneficial solution for both countries

According to the Indian official, India had started talks with Mexico at the time of the initial proposal of this bill. The Commerce Department is in touch with the Mexican Economy Ministry to find a solution that is beneficial to both countries in line with global trade rules. In this regard, a high level meeting has been held between Commerce Secretary Rajesh Aggarwal and Mexico’s Deputy Economy Minister Luis Rosendo. There are plans for further talks also.

The Indian government said that unilaterally increasing the Most Favored National (MFN) tariff without prior consultation is against the security of cooperative economic relations between the two countries. It also does not match the principles of transparency and predictability of the multilateral trading system.

Tariff will be applicable on Asian countries from next year

This tariff decision of Mexico has been taken to protect its domestic industry and producers. These new tariffs will be applicable from January 1, 2026. This tariff will be imposed on products from countries with which Mexico does not have a free trade agreement (FTA), such as India, China, South Korea, Thailand and Indonesia.

Affected products include auto parts, light vehicles, clothing, plastics, steel, home appliances, toys, textiles, furniture, shoes, leather goods, paper, cardboard, motorcycles, aluminum, trailers, glass, soap, perfumes and cosmetics.

Big impact on Indian automobile exports

Mexico is India’s third largest car export market. From here India exports cars and parts worth about 1 billion dollars (about Rs 8,500 crore). Major companies like Volkswagen, Hyundai, Nissan and Maruti Suzuki will be affected. Tariff on cars will increase from 20 percent to 50 percent.

The Indian official said, ‘India values its partnership with Mexico and stands ready to work together to create a stable and balanced trade environment for the benefit of businesses and consumers of both countries.’

Preparation of new plan between the two countries

India and Mexico are also planning to start talks for a free trade agreement. Experts believe that due to FTA, Indian companies can get exemption from these tariffs. This decision has come at a time when there is a tariff war going on in global trade. This step by Mexico is to strengthen domestic industry and increase income, but it may increase prices.

After America, Mexico has decided to impose 50 percent tariff on some selected goods imported from India. Now India has reacted to this step of Mexico. An official said on Saturday (December 13, 2025) that after this decision of Mexico, New Delhi has warned to take appropriate steps to protect its interests. He said, ‘India reserves the right to take appropriate steps to protect the interests of the country’s exporters while seeking a solution through dialogue.’

According to a PTI report, the official said that India was in touch with Mexico on this matter since the initial phase of the introduction of the bill. He said, ‘India’s Commerce Department is in talks with the Finance Ministry of Mexico to find a mutually beneficial solution in line with global trade rules.’

High level talks between India and Mexico

A high-level meeting has already taken place between India’s Commerce Secretary Rajesh Aggarwal and Mexico’s Deputy Finance Minister Luis Rosendo regarding this matter and follow-up meetings are also expected after this. The Government has said that a unilateral increase in MFN tariffs without any prior negotiation is neither consistent with the spirit of our cooperative economic relations nor with the principles of predictability and transparency of the multilateral trading system.

These tariffs, which are being imposed by Mexico to protect the national industry and producers, will come into effect from the beginning of next year i.e. January 1, 2026. The official said, ‘India attaches great importance to its partnership with Mexico and is ready to work collaboratively for a stable and balanced trade environment in the interest of businesses and consumers of both countries.’

Mexico imposed tariff on which Indian goods?

According to Mexico’s daily newspaper El Universal, Mexico has imposed tariffs on products like auto parts, light cars, clothing, plastics, steel, home appliances, toys, furniture, shoes, leather goods, paper, cardboard, motorcycles, aluminum, trailers, glass, soap, perfumes and cosmetics imported from India.

After America, now Mexico has also given a big blow to India. Mexico’s Parliament has approved a new bill, under which heavy tariffs ranging from 5% to 50% will be imposed on goods imported from many countries including India, China, Brazil. This law will apply to countries with which Mexico does not have a free trade agreement (FTA)—which includes India. This new fee structure will be applicable from January 1, 2026.

Mexico Parliament passes high-tariff bill
Both houses of the Mexican Parliament – the Senate and the lower house – have approved this bill. President Claudia Sheinbaum introduced it in September, proposing to increase import duties on 1,463 products.

Which products will be expensive?
The areas where fees have been increased in this law include:

vehicle parts

light vehicle

plastic products

toys

clothing and apparel

Furniture

Shoes

ready-made clothes

aluminum products

glassware

Tariffs ranging from 5% to 50% can be imposed on all these categories.

Why impact on India?
India does not have any FTA with Mexico, so this law will directly apply to Indian exports. India was Mexico’s 9th largest trading partner in the year 2023, and the total bilateral trade between the two countries stood at $10.58 billion. This means that many products sent from India will now become costlier in Mexico, which may affect the competitiveness of Indian companies.

Biggest impact on China, but India also affected
The government estimates that this move will generate additional revenue of $3.8 billion for Mexico every year. Although the biggest impact will be on China’s exports, India is also among the major countries which will have to face the brunt of this new law.

America had also taken a similar step
Earlier in August, America had increased the customs duty on many products imported from India to 50%. Now after Mexico’s decision, the pressure on Indian trade may increase further.

On December 10, Mexico’s Senate passed a major bill, in which there is a provision to impose up to 50% tariff on Asian countries like China, India, South Korea, Thailand and Indonesia. This is exactly like Trump’s tariff, which will come into effect from 2026. Mexico has taken this step by adopting a protectionist policy like the administration of US President Donald Trump, where Trump has also imposed heavy tariffs on Asian countries.

More impact on non-FTA countries

Tariff will be imposed or increased on about 1400 products of Asian countries. Automobiles, auto parts, clothes, footwear, plastics, steel, furniture, toys, aluminum and glass related goods exported to Mexico will be expensive. Countries which do not have a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with Mexico will be more affected.

This bill was passed rapidly in the Mexican Parliament. The Lower House approved it on December 10, and the Senate passed the bill by a 76–5 vote. President Sheinbaum had made this proposal in September 2025 itself and she is going to sign it soon.

Mexico trying to please America

Donald Trump has put pressure on Mexico to distance itself from China. The US-Mexico-Canada Trade Deal (USMCA) is due to be reviewed in 2026, and the US is considering Mexico as a ‘backdoor’ entry point for China. Experts are saying this is an attempt to please Washington. Like America, Mexico is also moving towards protectionism. This will strengthen Mexico’s local factories and more than 3 lakh jobs can be saved. But imported parts will be expensive, which may increase inflation. Mexican business groups have opposed this.

India-Mexico trade to be worth $11.7 billion in 2024

According to reports, trade between India and Mexico has increased in the last few years. In 2022, trade between the two countries was worth $11.4 billion, however, there was a decline in 2023 and it was $10.6 billion. In 2024, trade jumped to $11.7 billion, which is an all-time high. India’s trade surplus with Mexico is also very high. In 2024, India exported goods worth $8.9 billion to Mexico, while imported goods worth only $2.8 billion.
