Prime Minister Narendra Modi greeted people on Friday (5 September 2025) on the occasion of Milad-un-Nabi. This festival is celebrated on the occasion of the birthday of Prophet Muhammad, the founder of Islam. Prime Minister Modi said in a post on ‘X’, “This holy day brought peace and prosperity in our society. Always guide us the values, service and justice. Happy Eid.”

Milad-un-Nabi Prophet-e-Islam is celebrated as the birthday of Hazrat Muhammad. This festival falls in the Rabi-al-Awaal, the third month of the Islamic calendar. Sunni Muslims consider 12 Rabi-al-Awaal to be the birthday of the Prophet. At the same time, Shia Muslims consider 17 Rabi-al-Awal as date of birth.

Meaning of Milad-un-Nabi
Milad-un-Nabi means the birth of the Prophet and it is also called Maulid in many places, which means giving birth. This day is an opportunity to remember the teachings of the Prophet and his life. Prophet Mohammed was born in Mecca in about 570 AD. He is considered the founder and final prophet of Islam. At the age of six, he was orphans and raised by grandfather and uncle. At the age of 40, he received the first message of Allah from the angel Jibril Alaihissalam in the diamond cave of Mecca. This message later became part of the Quran. The Prophet spent his entire life to spread the message of humanity.

In India and other countries
In countries like India, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, processions are taken out, religious meetings are held and sweets are distributed in house to house. Countries like Saudi Arabia and Qatar do not celebrate it, because there is a tradition of Wahabwad and Salafiism, which does not consider events like birthdays appropriate.
