India on Tuesday (October 21, 2025) has announced a major change in its embassy located in Kabul, the capital of Afghanistan. The Ministry of External Affairs has announced that India will upgrade its political presence in Afghanistan from a technical mission to the level of a full embassy. This step is part of India’s growing engagement with the Taliban government. However, India has not yet given formal recognition to the Taliban regime which returned to power in August 2021.

This announcement has been made by the Indian Foreign Ministry at a time when Taliban Foreign Minister Aamir Khan Muttaki had recently completed his tour of India. India had called back its officials after the return of Taliban.

It is noteworthy that after the return of Taliban to power in the year 2021, India had withdrawn all its officers from Afghanistan and also closed all its missions. But, in June 2022, India sent a technical team led by a middle-level diplomat to Afghanistan and re-established a limited diplomatic presence in Kabul.

India’s Ministry of External Affairs issued a statement saying, ‘In accordance with the decision announced during the recent visit of the Foreign Minister of Afghanistan to India, the Government of India is, with immediate effect, restoring the status of India’s Technical Mission in Kabul and establishing it as the Embassy of India in Afghanistan.’ The ministry said, ‘This decision underlines that India is committed to further deepening its bilateral relations with the Afghan side in all areas of mutual interest.’

Sergio Gore has come to New Delhi on a six-day visit

According to the US State Department, Gore was accompanied by Deputy Secretary of Management and Resources Michael J. Rigas has also come on a visit to New Delhi. His visit will last from October 9 to 14, 2025.

This visit of Sergio Gore is taking place at a time when India and America are working towards further strengthening strategic and trade relations. Both countries are considering ways to finalize a trade agreement and increase cooperation in technology and defense sectors.

India and the United States have resumed talks on the recently proposed trade agreement after a few weeks of gap. The Foreign Minister also said that the stress in relations is not affecting every aspect of the conversation. He said, ‘There are problems, issues, no one can deny it. Those issues require negotiations, discussions and solutions and this is what we are trying to do.

He further said, ‘I will really refrain from finding anything implications about it more than issues. I think I also want to say that a large part of the relationship is either running as before or in some cases is going on more than before.
