Tamil Nadu Congress Cabinet: For the first time in almost six decades, Congress is going to be a part of the Tamil Nadu cabinet. Two party MLAs are scheduled to take oath as ministers in the Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK)-led government on Thursday.

The announcement came after Congress national president Mallikarjun Kharge announced the inclusion of Congress MLAs S. Approved the inclusion of Rajesh Kumar and P. Vishwanathan.

This move is being considered an important step in the changing political scenario of Tamil Nadu and an important means of strengthening the alliance supporting the TVK government.

Confirming the development through a social media post and calling it a historic moment for the party, AICC General Secretary K.C. “It is a historic occasion for us as the Congress is joining the Tamil Nadu cabinet after a long gap of 59 years,” Venugopal said.

He also extended his good wishes to both the leaders and expressed confidence that they will work towards fulfilling the aspirations of the people of Tamil Nadu by pursuing a welfare-oriented governance model.

Congress currently has 5 MLAs in the Tamil Nadu Assembly and after the assembly elections it has emerged as a major supporting force for the TVK government.

The support given by the Congress, along with other alliance partners including the Left parties, VCK and IUML, helped the Vijay-led administration easily cross the majority mark in the Assembly.

Political observers consider the inclusion of Congress ministers to be more important than a normal process of cabinet expansion. This is being considered a deliberate strategic move by the TVK leadership to strengthen coalition management and give more representation to allies while maintaining political stability.

The swearing-in ceremony to be held on Thursday is believed to be the beginning of a new chapter in Tamil Nadu politics, with the Congress returning to hold ministerial responsibilities in the state after a gap of nearly six decades.

Madhar Badruddin (VMS Mustafa), MLA of the ruling Tamil Nadu Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK), created a controversy on Thursday by supporting the statement given by Leader of Opposition in the Assembly Udhayanidhi Stalin on Sanatan Dharma. However, after all-round criticism he withdrew his statement.

Responding to this controversy, Tamil Nadu Minister Aadhav Arjun said that TVK is not against any religion, but opposes inequality.

Arjun said, “Udayanidhi Stalin has no knowledge of Sanatana Dharma. Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam is against the caste system and religious systems. We consider all religions equal. As a minister and under the leadership of our leader (Chief Minister Vijay), we respect all religions”.

He said that TVK opposes the caste system, not Hinduism.

Arjun clarified, “We are not against Hindus, but against Hindutva. In the North, Sanatan Dharma is often understood as Hinduism, while in the South it is associated with inequality. We believe that all religions should be treated equally and we are not against any religion”.

He said that Udhayanidhi was also against the caste system.

Madurai Central MLA Badruddin had commented, “We are also in the field to destroy Sanatan Dharma”.

The TVK MLA, however, issued a clarification after Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders criticized him and the Joseph C Vijay-led government.

BJP chief spokesperson Narayanan Tirupati alleged that a Muslim person, especially an elected representative, saying derogatory things about Hindu religion and announcing its abolition would seriously harm religious harmony.

Tirupathi asked in a post on ‘X’, “Will Mustafa, who criticizes Sanatan Dharma, dare to criticize the Islamic faith? Will he come forward to criticize Christianity?

The BJP leader said that the belief that one has the right to say anything just because one is in power shows arrogance.

He said, “Chief Minister Vijay has not yet condemned Udhayanidhi Stalin’s speech on Sanatan Dharma in the Assembly or the comments of TVK MLA Mustafa. For a Chief Minister who claims to represent all the people, it is not befitting his high position to not condemn criticism of the lifestyle of the majority community.

Tirupati said that Sanatan Dharma is “alive and eternal”. He said, “No one has destroyed or erased it in the past, nor is any person living today capable of doing so, nor will anyone born in the future be able to destroy it.”

Mustafa, when asked by reporters in Madurai on May 12 about TVK’s chances of winning the confidence motion in the assembly, had said that the party would be victorious.

When asked about Udhayanidhi Stalin’s comments regarding abolition of Sanatana Dharma, Mustafa said, “We in TVK are friends with Periyar E.V. Ramasamy and B.R. We follow the ideologies of Ambedkar, and we oppose Sanatan Dharma.

Mustafa clarified in a post on ‘X’ on Thursday that “we are not against any religion”.

Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) leader Udhayanidhi Stalin, during his address in the Assembly on May 12, reiterated his earlier controversial statement that Sanatan Dharma should be abolished.

BJP leader Vinod P Selvam demanded that Vijay should sack Mustafa to prove that he stands for secular values.

BJP’s ‘no entry’ message
Dilip Ghosh also gave clear indications about the new strategy of BJP. He said, “Last time we made a mistake, we probably gave tickets to the people who lost and we had to suffer the loss. This time the BJP is not giving entry to anyone.” This statement is being seen as an internal ‘filter mechanism’ of BJP. After not being able to perform as expected in the 2021 elections, the party now seems to be more cautious in candidate selection. BJP’s focus is now on such faces who are organizationally strong and can work at the grassroots level.

Dissatisfaction and changing equation in TMC
In this reshuffle, the party, while retaining 135 of its 209 sitting MLAs, canceled the tickets of 74, while the seats of 15 leaders were changed. Many big names were left out of the list, including leaders like Partha Chatterjee (Behala West), Vivek Gupta (Jorasanko), Paresh Pal (Behala), Asit Majumdar (Chinsura), actor Chiranjeet (Barasat), Kanchan Malik (Uttarpara), Mukutmani Adhikari (Ranaghat South) and Jeevan Krishna Saha (Bardhaman). Apart from this, four ministers Tajmul Hussain, Biplab Roy Chowdhury, Jyotsna Mandi and Manoj Tiwari could not make it to the candidate list, which indicated a large-scale political restructuring within the party.

The possibility of increasing dissatisfaction within TMC cannot be ruled out after the tickets of 74 MLAs were denied. Ticket distribution has always been a sensitive issue in Bengal politics and many times it has also become the reason for defection. BJP claims that many disgruntled leaders are contacting them, but the party currently wants to give a message of organizational discipline by adopting a policy of ‘no entry’. This strategy is being considered as an attempt to move BJP away from the politics of defection and towards ‘organization based elections’.
