Tesla owner Elon Musk answered this question asked on social media. In reply to the post, Elon Musk wrote that ‘Yes, but it also depends on the traffic around you’. This feature is not included in Tesla models in India.

How does Tesla car work?

Tesla’s driver monitoring system keeps an eye on the eyes of the person sitting in the driver’s seat through a camera installed in the cabin. After five such strikes, the fully self-driving feature stops in the vehicle and the driver has to handle the steering wheel himself. But now drivers have been given more facilities in Tesla cars.

The world’s famous electric car company Tesla has finally launched Model Y SUV in India, but this car will not be manufactured in India. It will be brought from the plant in Shanghai as Completely Built Unit (CBU), which leads to heavy import duty on it. The initial price of Model Y has been kept at around 60 lakhs, which removes it from the reach of common Indian customers.

How much is the price of Tesla Model Y?

• Heavy important duty is imposed on foreign cars in India, due to which the price of Tesla Model Y has increased considerably. 70% tax is levied on cars up to $ 40,000 (about 34.38 lakh) and 100% tax on expensive cars. This tax is fixed on the basis of cost, insurance and freight (CIF).
• For this reason, the price of Model Y has reached about 60 lakhs, which is expensive by Indian options like Tata Harrier.Ev and Mahindra Xuv.e9.
• While the price of Tata Harrier.ev is between 21.49 lakh to 30.23 lakh and the price of Mahindra Xuv.e9 is between 21.90 lakh to 31.25 lakhs, Tesla’s model y will not be directly faced by domestic brands like Tata or Mahindra but will be faced with international companies like Tata or Mahindra.

Tesla will affect domestic companies?

• Tesla’s arrival in India will not affect domestic companies because the first reason is the huge price difference. The 6 million car comes in the luxury segment, while the electric vehicles of TATA and Mahindra are made keeping in mind the mid-segment customers.
• Second, Tesla has not opened any local manufacturing unit in India yet, causing its cars to come completely (CBU) and cost expensive. Third, the customer base of this price range cars is very limited in India, so the sale of Tesla will not have any significant impact on the choice of common customers.

What will change with Tesla coming to India?

• According to experts, Tesla’s arrival in India is a positive sign for domestic companies. With this, companies like Tata, Mahindra, MG will pay attention to more innovation, better features and customer experience in their electric vehicles.
• Gaurav Wangal of S&P Global Mobility says that Indian companies will need to work hard in technology and design from Tesla’s entry. At the same time, Som Kapoor of Ey-Parthenon believes that Tesla’s vehicles are quite expensive, so it will not directly affect the market share of companies like TATA or Mahindra.
• India has become an essential market for Tesla at this time. On the one hand, while the EV segment in the world’s third largest automobile market is growing rapidly, on the other hand Tesla’s global sales have fallen 13.5% in the June quarter and it is getting a tough challenge from Chinese companies. It is estimated that India’s EV market can reach 10 lakh crores by 2030 to 22–25% annually.

Tesla model y in india: Alan Musk’s company Tesla has finally taken the official entry in India and Model Y has been launched. Its initial ex-showroom price is 59.89 lakhs, while the long range variant reaches 68 lakhs. This car is available only in the rear-wheel-drive (RWD) configuration.

The company has also opened India’s first showroom at Mumbai’s Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC). However, a few weeks after the launch, there are reports that Tesla prices can be cut by up to Rs 15-20 lakh.

Why Tesla so expensive in India?

The price of Tesla Model Y in India is much higher than in American and Chinese markets. In the US, the same car is available for about $ 44,990 i.e. 38.60 lakhs, while in China it is 31.5 lakhs and about 46 lakhs in Germany.

The biggest reason for the high prices in India is import duty, which is imposed from 70% to 110%. Since Tesla is currently entering India through CBU (Completely Built Unit) vehicles, it is being taxed in India.

Import duty is the biggest obstruction

Alan Musk has expressed concern about India’s import duty many times. He tweeted in 2021 and said that the import duty on vehicles in India is the highest in the world.

He believes that before setting up a factory in India, he wants to see how the demand in the market is, but due to such an expensive price, the car does not reach the customers.

Displeasure of domestic companies also became a hurdle

While Musk is demanding relief from the government, desi companies like Tata Motors and Mahindra have opposed it. He says that if foreign companies are exempted from import duty, then it will be injustice to local investors who have already invested heavy.

What is the new EV policy of the government?

In March 2024, the Government of India introduced the new Electric Vehicle (EV) policy, under which foreign companies will be allowed to import 8,000 electric cars every year on 15% import duty, if they invest more than ₹ 4,150 crore in India. However, to avail this facility, companies will also have to accept certain conditions.

They will have to start local production in India within three years.
By the third year, 25% localization and 50% localization will be necessary by the fifth year. In addition, the priced of imported vehicles should be more than $ 35,000 (about ₹ 29 lakh).

The purpose of this policy is to promote local production in India and attract foreign investment, but also strengthen ‘Make in India’.

Tesla’s next move: Will a factory be built in India?

Tesla has not yet made any official announcement to set up a factory in India. However, in 2024, Alan Musk had a plan to visit India, in which he was scheduled to meet Prime Minister Modi and was expected to announce an investment of $ 2–3 billion.

However, the tour was canceled at the last minute and no update came after that.

Can the price decrease with trade deal?

There is a conversation on a trade deal between India and the US, including the issue of reducing import duty on cars. The US wants India to remove the duty on automobiles, so that Tesla and other American companies can get easier in India.

If this trade deal is finalized before 31 July 2025 and import duty is reduced, then it may cause a drastic drop in the prices of Tesla Model Y.

How much can the price of Tesla decrease?

If Tesla is exempted under EV policy or import duty is reduced through trade deal, then the price of Model Y can come down from 60 lakhs to 45 lakhs.

Auto experts say that Tesla’s cars will be able to reach the mid-segment EV buyers, which are currently away from Tesla due to the price. This will not only increase the sales of the company but will also strengthen its brand domination in India.

Sealion 7 SUV of Byd has also been introduced in two variants in India. Its first variant comes with a single motor, which has a battery of 82.56kwh. This variant gives power of about 313 bhp and a range of about 482 km. Its price is 51.80 lakh rupees. At the same time, its second variant comes with dual motor, which gives power of about 530 bhp. However, the range decreases slightly and it can cover a distance of about 456 kilometers. The price of this dual motor variant can be between 60 to 65 lakhs. The specialty of this car is its powerful motor setup and sharp acceleration, but its range is slightly less than Tesla Model Y’s long range variants.

How is BMW X1 LWB luxury, range and price?

BMW’s X1 LWB is a premium electric SUV known for luxury build quality and balanced performance. It has a 66.4kwh battery, which generates power of 204 bhp. The range of this SUV is about 531 kilometers, which makes it better for long distances. Its ex-showroom price is Rs 51.90 lakh. In terms of range, it is slightly better than BYD and comes around Tesla’s RWD variants.

Which SUV is ahead in which?

If we compare the three trains, the long range variant of Tesla Model Y gives the highest range of 622 km.
