During the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit held in China, there was a cordial meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Xi Jinping. The two leaders insisted on strengthening the relationship and moving forward. However, India maintained their strong opposition to China’s ambitious Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). In this summit, most countries including Türkiye, Pakistan and Iran supported BRI, but India was the only country that refused to support it.

During the SCO meeting held in Beijing, India once again refused to support China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) project. India has not been in favor of BRI in any SCO summit or meeting so far. India’s objection to this project has been maintained for a long time and its stand is still the same.

These countries support BRI

Many important decisions were mentioned in the manifesto released after the SCO summit ended in the city of Tianjin, China. It also included China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), which was supported by countries such as Russia, Belarus, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. However, only India did not support the project among all the countries involved.

Why does India object to Bri?

India has always objected to Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). The biggest reason for this is the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), which passes through Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). India has a clear attitude that PoK is an integral part of it and any third country has no right to do construction work there.

At the SCO Summit, Prime Minister Narendra Modi showed a tough stand on the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). In the presence of Xi Jinping and Shahbaz Sharif, PM Modi said without naming that it is mandatory to honor the sovereignty of another country in any project, otherwise he has no importance.

PM Modi further said that the connectivity that sidelines sovereignty does not instill trust nor does it mean. India believes that strong connectivity not only increases trade, but also opens new opportunities for development and mutual trust. From this point of view, India is working on projects like Chabahar port and International North-South Transport Corridor (Instc).

The summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Sangathan (SCO) continues in the city of Tianjin, China. The most important session of the summit was held on Monday, in which leaders of all member countries including India, China, Russia, Pakistan, Iran and Central Asian countries discussed shared interests and current global challenges. After this session, a unique view was seen when Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin sat in the same car and came out.

PM Modi also shared a picture during the journey in the car on his social media handle, with which he wrote, “After the schedule of SCO Summit, President Putin and I went to our bilateral meeting site. The conversation with him is always very informative. This picture is considered a symbol of the strength of India-Russian relations. The presidential talks between the two leaders are going to be held soon. The pressure on India is being increased by Donald Trump. The Trump administration alleges that India is violating America’s sanctions by purchasing oil from Russia.

Meeting between the two countries on Sunday

After the commencement of the summit on Sunday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Chinese President Xi Jinping and held bilateral talks. In this meeting, there was a discussion on increasing cooperation between the two countries and taking forward mutual relations. This meeting is being considered an important diplomatic message between the changing equations between India, Russia and the US.

Why is SCO Summit?

SCO is one of the largest multilateral organizations in Asia, including India, China, Russia, Pakistan, Iran and Central Asian countries. The purpose of this forum is to strengthen political, economic and security cooperation. This meeting in Tianjin focuses on issues like current global crisis, terrorism, energy security and regional stability.
