Amid the violence that broke out after the death of a student leader in Bangladesh, protests and attacks against journalists have intensified in the country. Last week, Islamic fundamentalists set fire and vandalized the offices of two major newspapers of the country, in protest against which the journalists there protested fiercely on Monday (December 22, 2025).

Dozens of journalists and media personnel protested by forming a human chain in the country’s capital Dhaka. They were holding placards condemning attacks on press freedom and democratic values. Meanwhile, security forces were also deployed on the spot.

Violence broke out after the death of student leader

In fact, last Thursday (December 18, 2025) an angry mob attacked two offices in Dhaka. Many parts of the office building were set on fire and a lot of vandalism was also done in the office premises. These attacks took place amid anti-India sentiment that emerged after the death of Bangladesh’s popular student leader Sharif Usman Hadi.

Usman Hadi, 32, a staunch critic of India, was one of the leading faces of the pro-democracy movement that ousted Bangladesh’s then PM Sheikh Hasina from power last year. Earlier this month, Usman was shot by two masked gunmen while leaving a mosque in Dhaka. Hadi later died during treatment in a hospital in Singapore on Thursday (18 December).

Protestors set fire to many buildings in Dhaka

Protestors enraged by the killing of student leader Osman Hadi set fire to several buildings in the capital Dhaka, including the offices of two major newspapers, which are considered pro-India.

At the same time, Nurul Kabir, editor of New Age Daily and President of National Editors Council in Bangladesh, said that the attackers tried to burn the journalists alive. “When journalists were working inside the office, buildings were set on fire and even the fire department was prevented from carrying out rescue operations,” he said at a rally on Monday (December 22).

He said that the attackers had made it clear that anyone who disagreed with them would be burnt alive. He was even attacked while trying to help journalists trapped on the rooftop.

Accusations made against the government of Mohammad Yunus

Human rights organizations and media organizations in Bangladesh strongly criticized the uproar and violence and accused Mohammad Yunus and the government led by him of failing to control the situation. Media personnel claimed that this attack was carried out by people associated with the Yunus government.

The legal and political troubles of former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina are increasing continuously. Now a commission investigating the 16-year-old Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) insurgency has made shocking claims. According to the commission, Sheikh Hasina was allegedly behind the bloody rebellion in 2009, in which several top military officers were murdered.

The AFP report said that the Commission has also alleged in its investigation that India had a role in this conspiracy to weaken the Bangladesh Army. The findings of the report released on Sunday put new pressure on 78-year-old Hasina, who is already facing death sentence on charges of “crimes against humanity” over the government crackdown on last year’s student protests.

74 people lost their lives

This new front against Hasina has opened after the interim government working under the chairmanship of Nobel laureate Mohammad Yunus, in which a commission was constituted to re-investigate the BDR insurgency after being ousted from power. This rebellion, which started from Dhaka in 2009, spread across the country in two days and took the lives of 74 people. This incident happened just a few weeks after Hasina’s return.

Commission chief made a big claim

Commission chief A.L.M. Fazlur Rehman has claimed that the Awami League government of that time was directly involved in this rebellion. Describing former MP Fazle Noor Tapas as the main coordinator of this conspiracy, he alleged that Tapas implemented this plan at the behest of Hasina.

Claims of Indian role have made the matter more serious. Rehman said that clear evidence has been found of the involvement of a foreign power and openly took the name of India. According to him, 921 Indians had entered Bangladesh at the time of the rebellion, of which 67 had no records, which has been presented as evidence of the Indian role. There has been no official response from India on these allegations yet.

Sheikh Hasina living in India since 2024

It is worth noting that Sheikh Hasina had gone to India after the massive protests in July-August 2024, due to which relations between the two countries are already tense. After the release of the commission’s report, Yunus said that now the truth has come out.

The Mohammad Yunus government of Bangladesh has now banned the proposed visit of radical Islamic preacher Zakir Naik, wanted in India, to Bangladesh. At present Zakir Naik is taking refuge in Malaysia. There are many serious cases registered against him in India for terrorism, money laundering and spreading hate speech. In 2016, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) had filed a case against him under anti-terrorism laws, after which he fled India and obtained permanent residence status in Malaysia.

Naik was about to attend a religious program in Dhaka

According to reports, Naik was scheduled to attend a religious program to be organized in Dhaka on 28-29 November. The responsibility of this event was given to Spark Event Management Company, which had recently announced on Facebook that it is preparing to bring Naik to Bangladesh. The event was to be held in Agargaon area of ​​Dhaka and the organizers had claimed that they had received government permission.

Government canceled the program

However, now the government has canceled this program. It is noteworthy that former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina government had already banned Zakir Naik from entering the country. In 2016, two terrorists involved in the terrorist attack on a cafe in Dhaka were revealed to have been influenced by Naik’s radical speeches.
