On Friday (September 26, 2025) outside the United Nations headquarters in New York, USA, a large number of people from Bangladeshi Pravasi community gathered and staged a strong protest against Bangladesh’s interim chief advisor Mohammad Yunus. The protesters say that atrocities on religious minorities have increased in Bangladesh since Yunus took power. He raised slogans till Pakistan, which was clearly showing the anger of the migrant community.

The protesters alleged that the situation has worsened since the removal of Sheikh Hasina government on 5 August 2024. The attacks on minority communities, especially Hindus, Buddhists and Christians have intensified. Many people had to leave the country due to violence. A protestor said, “Yunus is pushing Bangladesh towards extremism, the situation is as if Taliban rule.”

Voice of victims and demands

The protesters alleged that Hindu priest Chinmay Krishna Das has been illegally jailed by the Yunus government. Minorities are constantly being murdered and harassed. Yunus captured power by removing the democratically elected Hasina government. They demand that they should leave the post of Yunus and conduct independent elections and the arrested religious leaders should be released immediately.

Dispute of Sheikh Hasina’s government and change of power

The protesters reminded that Sheikh Hasina’s government was illegally removed on 5 August 2024. He says that Bangladesh was handed over to Islamic forces and terrorist organizations by demolishing a democratic government.

Yunus’s side at the United Nations

In his address to the United Nations, Mohammad Yunus said, “Bangladesh had recently seen public rebellion and we are now on a journey of change.” He emphasized the important role of Bangladeshi migrant workers. Younus appealed to the host countries to give sympathy and security to the migrants.

Imf on bangladesh: Salehuddin Ahmed, financial advisor to the interim government of Bangladesh, said on Wednesday (25 June 2025) that the International Monetary Fund (IMF) had sought information on the date of the upcoming general election before releasing the fourth and fifth installment of the loan. The IMF Executive Board has recently approved the fourth and fifth installments under a $ 4.7 billion loan program for Bangladesh. Under this, Bangladesh will now get about $ 1.34 billion.

According to reports, the fourth installment in December was stopped by the IMF when many conditions could not be fulfilled due to political instability and economic challenges after the fall of the Awami League government in August 2024. Salehuddin Ahmed told the local media, “The IMF asked me if the elections will be held in February. They want to be convinced about it. We told them that yes, elections will be held in February itself. Now all, even IMF is satisfied that the election date has been announced.

Bangladesh continues three IMF
IMF has released $ 2.31 billion in three installments to Bangladesh, with $ 1.15 billion released last year. After approval of the fourth and fifth installment on Monday (23 June 2025), the IMF made a statement that Bangladesh’s economic situation has worsened during the interim government led by Mohammad Yunus. Reasons such as continuous political uncertainty, strict monetary policies, increase in business obstacles and tension in the banking sector were given behind this.

IMF warning to Bangladesh
IMF has warned Bangladesh that it should prioritize the financial sector policies and deal with increasing weaknesses. A concrete strategy should be developed immediately to ensure the safety of small depositors by implementing a new legal structure for banking reforms. ” The IMF also said that it will be mandatory for Bangladesh to rapidly implement structural reforms to achieve high-medium income status.

Mohammad Yunus’s pressure on the interim government
Significantly, the interim government led by Mohammad Yunus is already under heavy pressure on political and security fronts. The government is facing a sharp criticism from within itself due to failure in economic reforms. The destinations believe that Bangladesh’s economy is in serious crisis due to the political upheaval that has been going on since August 2024. The business sector in the country is facing huge cash crisis and many commercial and industrial institutions have been closed.

Muhammad Yunus Ban Awami League Party: Taking advantage of the ongoing tension between India and Pakistan, the interim government of Bangladesh, led by Mohammad Yunus, banned former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s party Awami League on Saturday (May 10). Mohammad Yunus has banned the Awami League under the anti -terrorism law.

Yunus’s office said, “This ban will remain in force until the hearing in the International Crime Tribunal (ICT) against the Awami League and its leaders is not completed, so that the security and sovereignty of the country can be protected.”

The interim government of Bangladesh also said that this decision has been taken to ensure the safety of leaders and workers of the movement held in July 2024. Apart from this, this decision has also been taken for the protection of complainants and witnesses prosecuted in the International Crime Tribunal. The ICT law was also changed in the meeting chaired by Yunus, so that any political party and its organizations can now be prosecuted.

Awami League response

Awami League has described this ban as unconstitutional and illegal. Party spokespersons said that this decision is a violation of democratic rights and a conspiracy to remain in power.

Unus government’s tough stance

A few hours before this decision, thousands of people gathered outside Muhammad Yunus’s residence and demanded a banning of Hasina’s party. The Yunus government has now amended the International Crime Tribunal Act of Bangladesh, so that it will be possible to run a criminal case against any political party.

Former leader’s departure from the country and police dismissal
Meanwhile, former senior League leader Abdul Hamid has left the country, while the authorities have suspended three police officers who were negligent at the airport.
