There is tremendous turmoil in the politics of Bangladesh before the general elections proposed in February 2026. Sajeeb Wajed, son of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and chief strategist of Awami League, has seriously accused the interim government and chief advisor Professor Mohammad Yunus of weakening democracy. He has said that excluding the country’s largest party from the elections is not a reform, but a deliberate political conspiracy.

Strong opposition to keeping Awami League out of elections
Sajeeb Wazed said that keeping Awami League out of the electoral process is against the basic principles of the democratic system. They allege that the interim government is afraid of holding free and fair elections, hence a strong political party is being deliberately excluded from the field.

Clear stance of the interim government
The interim government of Bangladesh has made it clear that Awami League will not be able to participate in the general elections to be held on 12 February 2026. The government says that the party’s political activities are banned and its registration has been suspended. Chief Advisor’s Press Secretary Shafikul Alam told reporters in Dhaka that the government’s position is completely clear and no consideration is being given to lifting the ban.

Rights of majority voters are being snatched away: Sajeeb
Sajeeb Wajed says that Awami League is not a small party, rather it has the support of about 40 to 60 percent of the voters of the country. In such a situation, keeping the party out of the elections means that crores of people are being deprived of their voting rights. He wrote on social media platform

How the matter reached here, know the entire incident
In the year 2024, Sheikh Hasina’s government fell after the student movement and political instability. After this, an interim government was formed under the leadership of Nobel laureate Mohammad Yunus. In May 2025, the government banned the activities of Awami League under the Anti-Terrorism Act. Along with this, the Election Commission also suspended the registration of the party. The government claims that the Awami League is responsible for the violence during the 2024 protests, while Sajeeb Wajed is calling it an act of political vendetta.

Sajeeb’s serious allegations against Yunus government
Sajeeb Wajed has made many serious allegations against the interim government. He said that the Yunus government is afraid of fair elections, the voting rights of half the population are being taken away by excluding the largest party and punishment is being given on the basis of political support. He says that an election in which the majority of voters are not included cannot be democratic.

Why increased concern at international level
International concern has also started emerging on this entire issue. Five US MPs have written a letter questioning this decision and said that banning an entire party affects the rights of voters. However, the interim government claims that it is not aware of this letter and the ban has been imposed completely as per the law.

Questions are being raised on the validity of the elections
Political analysts believe that if the ban on Awami League is not lifted before the elections, then questions may be raised at the international level on the legitimacy of the next government. According to experts, elections without Awami League cannot be called inclusive, because the party has won many elections continuously and its grassroots hold is still considered strong.

Bangladesh has become a fundamentalist country today. The entire country is suffering the punishment for one mistake of Mohammad Yunus. It is because of a decision taken by the head of the interim government that Hindus are being attacked continuously there today. However, along with the killing of Hindus, student leader Usman Hadi was also killed in Bangladesh.

As soon as Sheikh Hasina left the post, Mohammad Yunus took a decision in Bangladesh which threw the entire country into the fire of fundamentalism and that decision was to lift the ban on Jamaat-e-Islami. Jamaat-e-Islami is a fundamentalist organization, which openly advocates Khilafat. Its love for Pakistan has been reflected from time to time.

Jamaat-e-Islami gets free hand
This decision of Yunus gave a free hand to this fundamentalist organization, the result of which is visible today in the form of attacks on minority Hindus in Bangladesh. On August 8 last year, Yunus had lifted the ban on the organization named Jamaat-e-Islami. This fundamentalist organization hates Hindus. Sheikh Hasina government had banned Jamaat-e-Islami and its student group Islami Chhatra Shibir on August 1, 2024. The reason for this was the violence during the protests against student quota, in which more than 150 people lost their lives. Sheikh Hasina had banned it under the anti-terrorism law.

Jamaat had created massacre in 1971 war
Actually, Jamaat-e-Islami was started in 1941. This organization is completely pro-Pakistan and works on the instructions of ISI. The whole world has seen a glimpse of this in the 1971 war. When Jamaat-e-Islami supported the Pakistani Army in the Bangladesh War of Independence and had a hand in the killing of lakhs of people. In 2013, the Bangladesh court had barred it from contesting elections because its rule was against the constitution.

Jamaat wants to run Bangladesh according to Sharia
On 5 August 2024, Sheikh Hasina resigned and came to India. After this, Yunus government said that there is no terrorist activity of Jamaat and the allegations of Sheikh Hasina government were wrong. Jamaat is a radical Islamic organization, which wants to make Bangladesh a country with Sharia law. Its student group Shibir is very violent, killing enemies and instigating religious conflicts. Apart from this, this organization hates Hindus and is associated with other fundamentalist groups. After the war crimes verdict in 2013, its people demolished more than 50 Hindu temples and set fire to more than 1,500 Hindu houses and shops.

The 2024 violence saw 2,010 attacks from August 4 to 20. 1,705 families were affected and 152 temples were damaged. The fanaticism of the Jamaat is clearly visible in the killings of Hindus.

Tariq Rahman, the working president of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and son of the country’s former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, returned to the country on Thursday (25 December) after 17 years. His supporters gave him a grand welcome at the airport itself. After returning to Bangladesh, Tariq Rahman spoke on phone to Chief Advisor of the Interim Government Mohammad Yunus and inquired about his health.

While talking to Yunus, BNP Working President Tariq Rehman expressed his gratitude for the arrangements made by the government for his security. Tariq appreciated the steps taken to ensure the safety of himself and his family.

Political activities intensify regarding upcoming elections in the country
According to sources, the phone conversation between Tariq Rehman and Mohammad Yunus took place in a cordial atmosphere, in which the current political situation and personal discussion took place. This conversation of Tariq Rehman has taken place at a time when he has returned to his country after 17 years of exile and political activities have intensified in the country regarding the upcoming general elections.

Tariq Rahman’s return to his country is being considered an important development in the politics of Bangladesh, while the interim government is being cautious regarding security and law and order. Tariq Rehman announced on Thursday (25 December 2025) that he will visit the grave of his father and former military ruler General Ziaur Rehman on Friday. This program will start in the afternoon after Friday prayers. Rahman will pray for the peace of his father’s soul at the Samadhi site in Dhaka. After paying tribute to the founder of the party, he will leave for the National Martyrs Memorial located in Savar. Where he will lay a wreath in honor of the martyrs of the 1971 liberation war.

BNP largest party
Amidst the ongoing turmoil in Bangladesh, there is a lot of expectation and speculation about the arrival of Tariq Rahman, as he is being seen as the next possible Prime Minister of Bangladesh. Let us tell you that due to the ban on Sheikh Hasina’s Awami League, low popularity of NCP and Jamaat, BNP is currently the largest party in Bangladesh.

Amidst the ongoing unrest in India’s neighboring country Bangladesh, the interim government there has suffered a major setback. Khudabaksh Chaudhary, special assistant in the Home Ministry headed by Mohammad Yunus, chief advisor to the interim government, has resigned from his post and President Mohammad Shahabuddin has also accepted his resignation.

Khudabaksh Choudhary, a former Director General of Police (IGP) in Bangladesh, was appointed special assistant to Mohammad Yunus on 10 November 2024. His resignation has come at a time when the situation in the country is deteriorating rapidly after the death of rebellion leader Osman Hadi.

Meanwhile, Tariq Rahman, son of former Bangladesh PM, has returned to Bangladesh. Before the return of Tariq Rahman, one person was killed in a bomb attack near a church in the capital Dhaka on Wednesday (24 December). This incident has raised serious concerns regarding security in the capital. Let us tell you that after the death of student leader Usman Hadi, violence has intensified in Bangladesh. The mob also set on fire the offices of two major newspapers of the country, Daily Star and Pratham Aalo.

When will elections be held in Bangladesh?
This uproar is happening in Bangladesh at a time when less than 2 months are left for the country’s national elections. General elections are proposed in Bangladesh on 12 February 2026. This election is the first national election to be held after the fall of Sheikh Hasina government in July 2024. Khudabaksh Chaudhary’s resignation is the fourth major resignation from Yunus’s interim government.

Tariq Rehman is returning to his country
Tariq Rahman, son of former Bangladesh Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, returned to his country today (25 December) after 17 years. 1 lakh workers of his Bangladeshi Nationalist Party (BNP) gathered near the airport to welcome him. Let us tell you that Rahman had fled to London in 2008 to avoid arrest. At that time, many corruption cases were going on against him in Hasina government.

Awami League banned in Bangladesh
Yunus government has banned Sheikh Hasina’s party Awami League. In such a situation, BNP has great chances of winning the elections. BNP President Khaleda Zia is 80 years old and her health is very bad. It is believed that Tariq Rehman can be a contender for the next PM.

Political tension has increased in Bangladesh after the murder of student leader Sharif Usman Hadi. Hadi was shot in the head in Dhaka, due to which he died. Now his brother has accused a faction of the interim government led by Mohammad Yunus of plotting the murder to disrupt the national elections to be held in February.

Sharif Usman Hadi’s murder
Sharif Usman Hadi was the spokesperson of Inquilab Manch. It is a cultural organization that emerged during last year’s protests. Due to this demonstration, Sheikh Hasina was removed from power. Hadi’s assassination led to violent protests in Bangladesh, in which mobs targeted the offices of major newspapers and cultural organizations.

Hadi’s brother accused the government
Usman Hadi’s brother, Sharif Omar Hadi, took aim at the government during protests in Shahbag. He said, ‘You got Osman Hadi assassinated and now you are trying to postpone the elections by using this issue.’ Making serious allegations against the interim government, he said that his brother had expressed his desire to hold national elections by February.

Demand for elections and justice
Omar said that the killers should be immediately prosecuted so that the election environment is not affected. He warned, ‘If justice is not given for Usman Hadi, one day you too will have to leave Bangladesh. Omar was referring to Sheikh Hasina, who moved to India after the protests last year. Omar alleged that his brother was killed because he had decided not to bow before any agency or ‘foreign bosses’.

Inquilab Manch’s allegations and demands
Abdullah Al Jaber, member secretary of Inquilab Manch, said Usman’s killing was part of a ‘deep conspiracy’ to destroy the achievements of the July protests and the sovereignty of Bangladesh, The Daily Star reported. He claimed that international intelligence agencies and ‘fascist collaborators’ working in the country took part in the murder. Jaber has demanded from the government that the killers should be presented before the public within the stipulated time as per international standards, otherwise their opposition will intensify.

Salehuddin Ahmed, finance advisor to the interim government of Bangladesh, said on Tuesday (23 December 2025) that Chief Advisor Mohammad Yunus has taken steps to improve strained relations with New Delhi and his administration is working on developing economic ties with India while keeping economic interests separate from ‘political rhetoric’.

Ahmed told reporters after the meeting of the Advisory Council Committee on Government Procurement in his office, ‘The Chief Advisor is working on improving diplomatic relations with India and he himself is talking to various concerned parties on this subject.’ When asked whether Yunus had spoken directly to India, Ahmed said the chief advisor had “no”, but he had spoken to people associated with the matter.

Bangladesh will buy 50,000 tonnes of rice from India

Ahmed said, ‘Our trade policy is not driven by political considerations. If importing rice from India is cheaper than importing it from Vietnam or anywhere else, then it is economically logical that we buy this staple food grain from India. Ahmed expressed hope that bilateral relations will not deteriorate further. He also said that Bangladesh on Tuesday approved a proposal to buy 50,000 tonnes of rice from India, ‘taking steps towards building good relations’. He said that importing this rice will be beneficial for Bangladesh because importing rice from Vietnam instead of India will cost 10 Bangladeshi Taka (0.082 US dollars) more per kilogram.

India-Bangladesh relations reach worst level since 1971

Ahmed’s comments come at a time when diplomatic analysts have said that relations between India and Bangladesh are at their lowest level since Bangladesh’s independence from Pakistan in 1971. Both countries have summoned each other’s envoys and protests have taken place in front of the Bangladeshi and Indian missions in both the capitals and elsewhere. Despite this, the advisor said, ‘The situation has not reached such a bad stage.’

Are external forces spoiling the relationship?

Ahmed said, ‘From the outside it may seem that a lot is happening… However, there are some statements which are difficult to stop.’ When asked whether ‘people or external forces’ were making anti-India statements, he said, ‘We do not want any bitterness between the two countries. If someone from outside is trying to instigate problems then it is not in the interest of any country. He also said that these incidents do not represent ‘national expression’ but are creating ‘complex situations for Bangladesh’.

Amidst the unrest in the country and deteriorating relations with India, the head of the interim government of Bangladesh, Mohammad Yunus, is trying to improve relations. Salehuddin Ahmed, finance advisor to the interim government, says that Mohammad Yunus is actively trying to improve the strained relations with India.

He said that Yunus is talking to different stakeholders on this issue and is focusing on improving diplomatic relations. His statement has come at a time when relations between the two countries are going through a very bad phase. Visa service has been suspended. The ambassadors of both the countries have also been summoned several times.

Economic interests will be kept separate from politics
Salehuddin Ahmed said that the government wants to strengthen economic relations with India and for this, economic interests will be kept separate from political rhetoric. According to him, Bangladesh administration wants to advance trade and economic cooperation with India from a practical perspective.

No direct talks with India, but contact continues
When Salehuddin Ahmed was asked whether Mohammad Yunus had talked directly to India, the financial advisor said that Yunus has not talked directly to the Indian side at present, but is in touch with people related to the matter.

Bangladesh will buy 50 thousand tons of rice from India
Meanwhile, Bangladesh government has decided to buy 50,000 tonnes of rice from India. This decision was taken in the meeting of the advisory committee related to government procurement. According to the government decision, Bangladesh will buy a total of 1,00,000 tonnes of rice from India and Pakistan. The Food Ministry will purchase 50,000 tonnes of non-Basmati rice from Indian company M/S Pattabhi Agro Foods Private Limited, the price of which has been fixed at $355.77 per tonne.

Preparation to buy soybean oil from America and Nigeria
Apart from this, Yunus government will purchase a total of 3.75 crore liters of soybean oil from Nigeria and America. In this, 1.25 crore liters of soybean oil will be purchased from America at the rate of Taka 132.69 per liter, while the remaining oil will be purchased from Nigeria at the rate of Taka 121.32 per liter.

Even though the situation seems calm at the moment after the recent violence and protests in Bangladesh’s capital Dhaka, the tension in the political circles has not reduced. The country’s former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has held the interim government and its chief Mohammad Yunus directly responsible for the current situation. In an interview, he claimed that the same situation on the charges of anarchy on which his government was removed has become more serious under the current regime.

Yunus held responsible for violence and chaos
Sheikh Hasina said that the violence that spread after the assassination of Sharif Usman Hadi has badly affected the law and order of the country. According to him, the impact of this instability is not limited to Bangladesh only, but has also had a negative impact on relations with neighboring countries. He alleged that the interim government led by Yunus has completely failed to handle the situation.

Concern over India-Bangladesh relations
Sheikh Hasina raised serious questions on the current government regarding India-Bangladesh relations. In an e-mail interview with ANI, he said that the interim administration is continuously making harsh and hostile statements against India. They allege that the Yunus government has not been able to ensure the security of religious minorities and fundamentalist forces are being allowed to interfere in important matters like foreign policy. In this background, he also mentioned the recent murder of a Hindu youth, which has further increased the tension between the two countries.

Called India a reliable friend
Sheikh Hasina clarified that India has been Bangladesh’s most stable and reliable partner for decades. According to him, the relations between the two countries are stronger than any temporary political arrangement. He expressed hope that when the rule of law is again established in Bangladesh, both the countries will return to the old path of trust and cooperation, which was strengthened over the years by the Awami League government.

Called the decision against him a political conspiracy
Reacting to the recent verdict given against her, Sheikh Hasina said that it has nothing to do with justice. According to him, this is an attempt to eliminate him and his party politically. He alleged that he was neither given a chance to present his case nor was he allowed to choose a lawyer of his choice. He said that the tribunal is being used to target the Awami League.

Sharp warning regarding elections
Sheikh Hasina took a very strict stance on the upcoming elections. He said that any election conducted without Awami League cannot be free and fair. He claims that the current leadership is ruling without the mandate of the people and now there are preparations to ban the party to which the people have handed over power several times. He warned that if people do not get the opportunity to vote for the party of their choice, a large number of voters will abstain, raising questions about the legitimacy of any new government.

Response to extradition demands
Regarding the demands for extradition, Sheikh Hasina said that such voices are being raised from a desperate and directionless government. Expressing his gratitude to India, he said that he is grateful for the respect and security with which he has been given shelter here. He also said that the support of various political parties of India encourages him.

What did Sheikh Hasina say on returning to Bangladesh?
Clarifying her decision to leave the country, Sheikh Hasina said that she had taken this step to prevent further bloodshed. She bluntly said that she is not afraid of facing justice, but there is no hope of fairness in the current situation.

On 15 December, a multi-party protest rally was organized at Central Shaheed Minar in Dhaka. This rally was organized by Inquilab Manch. This rally was in protest against the attack on their spokesperson Sharif Osman Hadi. Hadi was shot at by unknown assailants on Friday, in which he was seriously injured and taken to Singapore.

Threat to separate Seven Sisters from India

In this rally, Hasnat Abdullah, the chief organizer of the southern region of Bangladesh’s National Citizen Party (NCP), has openly threatened India. He said that if there is any attempt to destabilize Bangladesh, the seven northeastern states of India will be isolated. These seven states are called ‘Seven Sisters’, which include Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Mizoram and Tripura.

Hasnat Abdullah made serious allegations against India

Hasnat said that those who interfered in the election process, spread anarchy in the country and are behind the attack on Usman Hadi are getting India’s support. He also accused India of being involved in border killing of Bangladeshi citizens. He said in clear words, ‘I want to tell India clearly that if you give shelter to those forces who do not respect Bangladesh’s sovereignty, voting rights and human rights, Bangladesh will retaliate.’

He warned that destabilizing Bangladesh would lead to unrest in the entire region and the fire of protest would spread across the borders.

Hasnat is a big opponent of Sheikh Hasina

Hasnat Abdullah is a leader who played a key role in the violent protests against Sheikh Hasina government. He has been continuously giving anti-India statements. In the rally, NCP’s northern region chief organizer Sarjis Alam also made anti-India statements. He said that relations with India cannot be normal until Sheikh Hasina is given shelter.

How did India respond to this?

This statement has come at a time when general elections are near in Bangladesh. After the fall of Sheikh Hasina and formation of interim government of Mohammad Yunus, anti-India statements have increased. The Seven Sisters area is geographically sensitive, connected to main India through the Siliguri Corridor (Chicken Neck) of West Bengal.

Till now there has been no reaction on this statement from the Government of India or any official. Investigation and political activities are ongoing.

Former Prime Minister of Bangladesh Sheikh Hasina has been sentenced to death by the International Criminal Tribunal (ICT) after finding her guilty of crimes against humanity. Hasina, who is living in exile in India, has been awarded death sentence in two out of five cases and life imprisonment in the remaining cases. Terming the decision as a political conspiracy, he has called it a decision of a ‘fake court’. After this decision, many experts are now calling it not Bangladesh’s politics but a part of ‘International Game’.

What is Sheikh Hasina’s case?
ICT held Sheikh Hasina directly responsible for the violence, deaths and repression that took place during the 2024 student movement. The court says that at that time drones, helicopters and deadly weapons were used on his instructions, due to which 1,400 people died and about 24,000 people were injured. The court sentenced Hasina to death by calling her the ‘mastermind’ of these incidents.

Experts said – this decision is ‘political revenge’
Many experts and former diplomats have raised serious questions on the decision. He believes that this entire process is politically influenced and Hasina was not even given a chance to clarify. Defense analyst Dr Brahma Chellani termed ICT as a ‘Kangaroo Court’ and said that this decision is not justice but political vendetta. He said that Awami League has already been banned and the interim government is using the judicial system to eliminate its political opponents.

America-Pakistan game against India?
Retired Major General and defense expert Sanjay Meston claimed that the agenda of America and Pakistan is working behind this entire incident. According to him, both these countries want to mold Bangladesh into an anti-India Islamic framework. He also said that democracy is being systematically weakened in Bangladesh.

Former diplomats also raised questions on the decision
Former High Commissioner of India to Bangladesh, Veena Sikri also called the court’s decision illegal. He says that no official basis was given for the figure of 1,400 deaths, nor was the identity of the victims disclosed. He said that this decision was given so quickly that it seems to be motivated more by political motives than judicial process. Former ambassador Ashok Sajjanhar also said that this decision was predetermined as all the members of the tribunal are trusted people of the current interim government.

Former High Commissioner of India Riva Ganguly Das said that the situation needs to be viewed very carefully. He told that after the verdict, two bulldozers were seen moving towards 32 Dhanmondi of Dhaka, where Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was murdered. He raised questions as to who are bringing these bulldozers and why that place is being targeted. He said that incidents of violence and arson have been increasing continuously for the last few days, due to which the situation has become very dangerous. India will have to keep a close eye on this situation in its neighbourhood.

Yunus is also doing the same thing!
Even before the decision, there was a situation of violence, crude bomb attacks and tension in Dhaka. Meanwhile, the interim government gave orders to the security forces to ‘shoot at sight’, questions are also being raised about this. Experts say that the present government itself is taking the same action on the charge on which Hasina was punished.
