As soon as the monsoon season arrives, people’s eyes are on the report of the Meteorological Department on the rain all over the country. Today, news like 20 mm of rain in Delhi, 100 mm rainfall record in Mumbai, or less than normal rainfall in Kolkata becomes common. But have you ever thought that how does the Meteorological Department decide how much rain occurred in which city? And what does this mean?

Rain is measured in millimeters (mm). When the Meteorological Department says that Delhi receives 20 mm of rain, it means that if you place a container on a flat surface, then 20 millimeters i.e. 2 cm of water will accumulate in it, provided it does not shed water or does not contain the ground.

How does the Meteorological Department measure rain?

The Indian Meteorological Department does the work of measuring rain in India – India Meteorological Department. For this, a device called Rengez is used. This device is a cylindrical container in which rain water collects. The more water it collects, the more rain is considered. The amount of rainfall is measured in millimeters (mm). For example, if it is said that a city has received 10 mm of rain, then it means that water accumulated up to 10 mm height in a square meter area.

Renge’s network spread across the country

The IMD has a network spread across the country, which includes thousands of Rengez stations. These stations are installed in every state and every big city which record data continuously. Apart from this, the Meteorological Department prepares accurate prediction and report with the help of satellite, doppler radar and computer models.

How many rain in which city?

In the beginning of the monsoon season 2025, many parts of the country have been recorded more than average and less rainfall. For example, in Mumbai, in June, about 1200 mm of rain has been recorded so far, which is slightly higher than normal. Delhi received about 200 mm of rain, which remained close to the normal level. The monsoon started slow in Kolkata but till the beginning of July, more than 500 mm of rain has been received.

How is the monsoon report released?

IMD releases reports like Daily Rainfall Report, Weekly Weather Summary and Monsoon Update every day. This information is delivered to the public through the website of the Meteorological Department, mobile app and news agencies.

The monsoon has arrived in the country and now it is slowly reaching everywhere. The Meteorological Department estimates that good rains are likely in the next few days. It has covered almost the whole of North India. Right now its conditions remain favorable in the Arabian Sea of the north. Now it is also going to reach Rajasthan, Haryana, Chandigarh and Delhi as well. The Meteorological Department says that in the next two days, the remaining parts of western Uttar Pradesh such as Himachal Pradesh and Jammu will also reach the monsoon. Rain is good for the country, but in this season, moisture and dampness start coming in the house. But it ends by August. Let’s know its connection with science.

The weather pattern changes by August

Everyone likes the rainy season, but due to this, moisture and dampness in the weather bothers. Due to this, the walls and wood of the houses start to deteriorate and the smell also comes in the house. Because of this, people of the house can also fall ill. But if you have noticed, then the damp is over by the last of July or in August. Many people take all measures to avoid this, but there is no benefit. With the end of the rain, the intensity of the monsoon ends and the pattern of rain changes.

Why the dampness ends

Due to heavy rains in June, the amount of moisture and water increases, due to which the problem of damping starts. At the same time, the distribution of rain in July and August can be irregular and due to this, there may be more rain in some areas and some areas may be reduced. Apart from this, the direction of the air also changes, which can reduce moisture and reduce the problem of damping. The damp comes especially in those houses that are not well insulated or which have cracks in the walls.

Moisture flies as a vapor

As the weather is cured, as the weather is cured, the temperature increases, so that moisture fly as vapor and the wind direction helps in drying moisture. Due to this the damping decreases.
