Nowadays, diseases spread by mosquitoes have become a big challenge for the world. After dengue, malaria, Chikungunya is now becoming a dangerous disease spreading rapidly. The disease is spread by the bite of mosquitoes, especially Aedes aept and Aedes albopictus. These are the same mosquitoes that also spread dengue and zika virus.

Recently, scientists from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, Nagasaki University and International Vaccine Institute at Seoul did a research, which found that around 1.44 million people are in danger of chikungunya infection every year. In this study, India has been described as the most affected country, where every year 51 lakh people are hit by this disease. This is followed by Brazil and Indonesia.

What is Chikungunya?
Chikungunya is a viral disease that spreads by mosquito bites. Its biggest impact falls on the joints of the body. High fever, body breakdown, and especially joint pain in joints are its main symptoms. In many cases this pain can persist for months or years, due to which a person can also become physically weak.

Why is the danger increasing in India?
India’s population, climate, cleanliness status and increasing urbanization create suitable environment for mosquitoes. Apart from this, dirty water accumulation, coolers, utensils and other places stalled water, lack of open waste and cleaning, increasing moisture during the rainy season, all these reasons increase the number of mosquitoes and give a chance to spread diseases like chikungunya. In such a situation, scientists have warned that if it is not stopped in time, then in the coming years this disease can spread in such areas where it was not present till now. Research has said that in the coming time, the number of infected people of Chikungunya can reach 3.49 crores in the coming time, which can include 1.21 crore people in India.

How dangerous is this disease?
Due to chikungunya, about 50 percent of the patients remain symptoms for a long time, due to which they are not able to do the work of daily life. This can be fatal among people more than 80 years and children below 10 years. At the same time, people between the ages of 40 to 60 are getting affected the most. According to research, 54 percent of Chikungunya cases reach the chronic level. In such a situation, prevent mosquitoes from being born to prevent this disease, do not allow water around the house, clean coolers, pots and tanks, wear body-covering clothes, use mosquito nets or repellent, use pesticides spray and take special care during the rainy season.

Delhi has seen a tremendous increase in malaria cases this year. A total of 264 malaria cases were registered in the capital till 6 September, which is the highest figure from January to September in the last five years. Last year, 237 cases were registered during the same season, while 138 cases were registered in 2023, 34 in 2022 and 37 cases were registered in 2021. In the last five years, compared to total malaria cases, 792 cases have been registered in 2024, 426 in 2023, 263 in 2022 and 167 in 2021. There were only two deaths in these years in one 2022 and one in 2023.

Due to increase in malaria cases

According to senior MCD officials, a major reason for increasing the case this year is more testing and monitoring. Earlier there was only blood slide test and there was no facility to test many hospitals, dispensaries and labs. Now widely testing is being done through rapid diagnostic kits. However, all matters cannot be considered as local malaria in Delhi. There are some migratory cases, that is, when people from the surrounding areas come to hospitals in Delhi or someone comes to a relative in Delhi and becomes infected, then its cases are added to the figures of Delhi. A total of 54 migratory cases were registered in Delhi this year.

Malaria again

When the patients do not take full medicine, the symptoms disappear but the parasites live in the body and can grow again. The drugs used in the treatment of malaria should be taken for 15 days, chlorocwin and pimchalin, but often it does not happen.

Rescue and treatment

Symptoms of malaria appear 9–14 days after mosquito bites and may include high fever, headache, chills, vomiting and fainting in severe cases. People are advised to go to the nearest health center and take the medicine. Destroy mosquito breeding sites, keep closed with tanks, drums and utensils and maintain cleanliness.

The Central Government has prepared the National Strategic Plan: Malaria Elimination 2023-27, which aims to completely eliminate zero local malaria cases by 2027 and malaria by 2030. The scheme includes district -wise scheme, surveillance and treatment measures.
