How Mouth Breathing Affects Sleep Quality: Breathing is a process to which we rarely pay attention. But this seemingly simple habit can deeply affect our body’s energy, sleep and long-term health. Especially when breathing is being taken through the mouth instead of the nose and that too without us knowing. Often people believe that mouth breathing happens only when the nose is blocked or heavy exercise is going on. But in many cases it becomes a habit, especially during sleep. Dry lips when waking up in the morning, frequent thirst or slight fatigue can all be signs that the pattern of breathing has changed.

What do experts say

Dr. Samhita Ullod, Assistant Professor at SDMIAH, Bengaluru, says, “Mouth breathing, i.e. breathing through the mouth instead of the nose, is considered an abnormal condition, especially if it occurs continuously during sleep. In such cases, proper diagnosis and treatment is necessary.” Actually our body is made to breathe through the nose only. The nose is not just a passage for air but also acts as a natural filter. It cleans the air, adds moisture to it and prevents dust and bacteria. When we breathe through the mouth, this entire process is skipped.

what is the problem

According to Dr. Ullod, “By breathing through the nose, the air is filtered, humidified and harmful particles are prevented from entering the body.” But when breathing through the mouth, cold, dry and unfiltered air reaches the lungs directly, which can affect breathing over time. Another big impact of this is on the energy level. Many times people feel tired even after getting complete sleep. One reason for this could also be mouth breathing. Due to this, the body does not get enough oxygen and energy production is affected.

Read this also – Hot Water Benefits: To lose weight, you also drink hot water in the morning, does this hack really work?

Dr. Ullod says that this can cause fatigue, lack of concentration and gradually respiratory problems. Apart from this, the quality of sleep also deteriorates. Due to mouth breathing, sleep can be interrupted again and again, even if we do not realize it. This problem related to sleep can further aggravate serious conditions like sleep apnea. Dr. Ullod says that this habit can worsen sleep apnea and fragments sleep.

What is the effect on children

Its effect can be even more profound in children. Prolonged mouth breathing can affect facial structure, condition of teeth and even posterity. The good thing is that this habit can be changed. But for this the most important thing is to identify the reason. If the nose is blocked, there is allergy or sinus problem, then it is necessary to treat it first. Along with this, breathing exercises like Pranayam, regular physical activity and taking doctor’s advice if necessary can prove helpful.

Why Do I Wake Up With Dry Mouth And Bad Breath: When we wake up in the morning, our mouth feels dry and smells bad, then we often ignore it considering it as normal “morning breath”. But sometimes this is not just the effect of a night’s sleep, but can also be a sign of some disturbances going on inside the body. In fact, our mouth is a kind of mirror of the body, which tells us how the body handled water, breathing and digestion during the night. Let us explain in detail,

What do experts say?

Dr. Gargi Singh Thakur told TOI that dry mouth or foul smell in the morning can be a sign of dehydration, poor sleep or metabolic problems. Actually, when we sleep, saliva production in the body reduces. This saliva keeps our mouth clean, controls bacteria and removes food particles. As soon as its quantity decreases, bacteria start growing rapidly and the smell becomes more felt in the morning.

What is the cause of dry mouth?

Dehydration is also a major reason for dry mouth. If there is a lack of water in the body, the body gives priority to the essential organs and less saliva starts being produced in the mouth. Sleeping in AC, consuming caffeine or alcohol at night can further increase this problem. Another reason is mouth breathing. Many people breathe through the mouth due to blocked nose, allergy or habit, due to which the mouth dries quickly and bacteria start growing. It may also be a sign of poor sleep, as mouth breathing is often associated with snoring and disrupted sleep.

effect of sleep quality

Quality of sleep also plays an important role here. If sleep is frequently interrupted or is not deep, the nervous system gets affected and the production of saliva further reduces. This is the reason why people who are unable to sleep properly have more problems in the morning. Sometimes the cause of bad smell is also related to digestion. If food is not digested properly, some elements start accumulating in the body, which come out through breath and cause bad smell. Acid reflux or irregular eating habits can further increase this problem.

Stress and some medicines can also increase this problem. Stress changes the way of breathing and less saliva is produced. At the same time, some medicines like antihistamines or blood pressure medicines can also make the mouth dry.
