India’s great Mughal Emperor Akbar traveled to Ajmer continuously for about 12 years and attended the Dargah of Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti, but suddenly after 1579 he stopped going to Ajmer. The question is why?

Historians say that Akbar’s religious attitude was gradually changing. He did not want to be limited to Islam only, but also made a new path by combining all religions. With this thinking, he started Deen-e-Ilahi.

What did Abdul Qadir Badauni say?

Mulla Abdul Qadir Badauni wrote in his book Muntakhab-Ut-Tawariikh that some people smiled at Akbar’s dargah and said, “How surprising that the emperor believes in Khwaja but has left the Prophet’s path.” Badauni targeted Akbar through sarcastic poems and said that this attitude was annoying Muslims.

Historians believe that by this time Akbar’s religious views had changed. He was moving towards “human religion” instead of believing in one religion. This was the period when he laid the foundation of Deen-e-Ilahi. Akbar started considering himself as an messenger of Allah.

Mullas reacted sharply to this attitude of Akbar

The Mullas reacted sharply to this attitude of Akbar. Many issued fatwa against him and even planned to put his brother Hakim Mirza on the throne. Due to this controversy, Akbar stopped Ajmer trips.

However, he did not completely break his relationship with Ajmer. In 1580, Akbar appointed Abdurrahim Khankhana as Nazim of Ajmer and sent his son Mirza Danial to the dargah in the same year. Danial distributed Rs 25,000 to Faqirs there. Later Akbar’s wife Salima Begum and her sisters also reached Ajmer, who brought Shahzada Salim to Agra with security.

Historians believe that after 1579, Akbar’s focus was focused on strengthening his new ideas and power after 1579. This was the reason that he completely stopped traveling to Ajmer.

Many years ago, India was ruled by the great emperor Akbar. His court was considered the center of knowledge and thoughts. Akbar wanted people not to tie the old rules only, but should adopt new thinking and education. Scholar Mulla Abdul Qadir Badauni was also in his court. He wrote in his book Tawarikh that Akbar left some Islamic rules and accepted some things of the heretics. Mulla Badauni made many serious allegations against Akbar, some of which cannot be mentioned publicly.

Akbar made this plan in 1582

In 1582, Akbar planned to run a new religion. He held meetings with the intelligent people of his court. In a meeting, King Bhagwandas Kachhwaha asked him that if Hindu and Muslim religion are bad, then what will be his new religion. Akbar thought and stopped persuading the king to the new religion, but continued to work on his thoughts.

Meanwhile, some opponents were sent to southern states. He explained to the rulers there that Akbar has punished them, so that they get shelter in their states with respect. Akbar appointed Qazi Abdul Samee in Delhi and implemented new rules.

Darbari started changing names to please Haram’s women

Mulla Badauni wrote that some courtiers started changing their names to please the women of Haram. He changed the name to names like Mohammad, Yaar Mohammad. Seeing these steps, Akbar tried to change education and thinking in the society.

Akbar called Syed Mir Fateh Ulla and tasked him to teach the children of the rich. Children were taught new ways of calculations, letters and knowledge. Syed Mir Fateh Ulla gave modern education to the children and introduced them to new thinking.

Mulla Badauni protested

Mulla Badauni protested, but it was clear that Akbar’s purpose was to expand knowledge and education in the society. Their efforts gave the children a new thinking and created a new atmosphere of ideas in the court.

The Haram of the Mughal Empire has always been a mysterious and attractive theme for historians and writers. Haram was started by Babur. Akbar gave it a grand appearance. During Akbar’s era, there were more than 5,000 women in Haram, including queens, mistresses, maids and women workers. In Arabic, harem means holy place. It was a complex where only the emperor was allowed to enter.

Historian Prannath Chopra writes in his book some aspects of social life during the mughal age that women of different religions and cultures live in Haram. Different parts were made for queens, mistresses and maids. The emperor had different rooms for special favorite women and disliked women. The responsibilities of women included grooming gardens, overseeing curtains and fountains, keeping shama burning etc. There was a strict arrangement of curtains. Many maids used to spend their whole life in harem, but could not even see the king properly.

Security and arrangement
The entry of men in Haram was forbidden, so women also used to do security work. For this, women with strong stature outside India were called, who neither came to the local language nor were interested in meeting anyone.

Salary and eye
A lot of money was required for the arrangement of Mughal harem. A woman posted in a big post used to get a monthly salary of Rs 1600, while at that time 1 Tola gold used to come for only 10 rupees. The woman soldier of Haram used to get so much salary that she could buy gold every month. Many women used to get more than their salary (jewelry, Ashrafis, precious items).

Conditions and rights of entry into harem
There were strict rules to be a part of Haram. Honesty and tension were very important. Haram’s woman could not go out nor could anyone come inside. Women had so much right that they could stop any man at the door except the emperor. The secret royal decree also used to stop at the door and the maids used to do the work of sending him to the queens or the emperor.

Development and collapse of harem in Mughal period
Haram was present from Babur to Bahadur Shah Zafar. From the time of Akbar, this system came in a systematic form. Haram was at its peak during Jahangir. In the era of Aurangzeb, along with the collapse of the Mughal Empire, the collapse of Haram also started and it gradually became the base of the color. The main royal harem was located in Agra, Delhi, Fatehpur Sikri and Lahore. Apart from this, harem was also made in other cities.

Can a Muslim emperor ask Hindu pundits to ask for marriage? It may seem strange to hear, but the truth is that a Mughal ruler also happened in history, who had unwavering faith in Indian astrology and he was the emperor ‘Akbar the Great’.

Akbar not only made the horoscope of his son Salim (Jahangir) from seven astrologers, but the date of marriage was also decided by seeing the Hindu calendar. How Akbar crossed the walls of religion and gave direction to politics through the movement of ‘planets’, and why this episode is relevant in today’s world. Know-

When the Mughal emperor asked astrologers and decided the auspicious time of marriage
In today’s modern era, some people may feel this imagination, but not. This is the amazing truth of history, when Mughal Emperor Akbar consulted Hindu astrologers for the wedding of his son Salim. A Mughal ruler was not just religious tolerance, but a proof of reverence for knowledge.

Akbar’s ‘Ibadatkhana’ shows what his thinking?
Historian Vincent Smith writes in his book ‘Akbar: The Great Mogul’ that Akbar (1542–1605) was more than a winner, a secular thinking emperor.

Akbar established ‘Ibadatkhana’ in Fatehpur Sikri, where he used to discuss deeds with Hindu, Jain, Muslim and Christian scholars. In one place he writes ‘It was common for akbar to ask Hindu astrologers and jain scholars to interpret celebial events.’ That is, discussion with astrologer and scholars, analysis of planetary transit was a part of daily life for Akbar.

Jahangir’s horoscope was made by seven astrologers
Wheeler M. Thackston who translated many books, translating Jhangirnama, writes that when Salim was born, Akbar invited seven astrologers to make his horoscope i.e. horoscope. Some of these were experts in Hindu calendar and some Greek astronomy.

Tuzuk-e-Jahangiri (Jahangiranama) is the autobiography of Mughal Emperor Jahangir. It is written in Persian. This autobiography is also considered a unique example of literature. Translating it into English, wheeler M. Thackston writes- ‘When I was born, astrolowed, both hindu and muslim cast my horoscope …’ Jahangir writes that when I was born, both Hindus and Muslim astrologers made my horoscope.

Marriage was removed from Hindu calendar
The auspicious day of Jahangir’s marriage was also decided on the basis of the calculation of these Hindu astrologers. This is an example of Akbar’s belief that time in state works should be selected according to the planets.

Indian historian Satish Chandra writes in his book Medieval India: From Sultanat to the Mughals that ‘He Considered Planetary Positions and Consulted Brahmin Astrologers before Royal Weddings.’ That is, the Mughal emperors used to consider the position of the planets before the royal weddings and consulted the Brahmin astrologers.

What was Akbar’s faith in astrology only tradition or trust in science?
It also has to be understood that why the Mughal Emperor Akbar believed so much in astrology. There are also examples that Akbar did not ignore astronomical events like solar eclipse, lunar eclipse, constellation change.

Science also believes these things. In Akbar’s court, scholars like Pandit Jagannath, Birbal had authority over astrology and scriptures. H. Blochmann who translated the mirror Akbari (Ain-I-Cabari), he writes ‘Akbar Respected the Learning of the Brahmins and often Consulted them in Astrological matters.’ That is, ‘Akbar respected the education of Brahmins and often consulted them in astrological matters’.

Did Akbar implement the instructions of Indian astrological texts?
The importance of Muhurta is explained in detail in Vedic scriptures. The tradition of watching Muhurta is not limited to work like marriage. It is clearly written in Brihajjatakam or large native composed by Varahamihira-

Nakshatranan Ch Sarveshan Muhurta Pashyatam Shubham.
Rajya Vivan Yajnay Ch Prashanthanam Dress॥

(That is, it is necessary for the state, marriage and sacrifice to remove auspicious time on the basis of planets and constellations.) Even today this Sanatan tradition is being followed. Which was also relevant even during Akbar’s time.

Is the relationship of knowledge above religion?
It is a symbol of India’s religious diversity and tolerance. This shows that the relationship between power and knowledge is above religion. This proof seems amazing in today’s interfath dialogue and mixed marriages.

This step of Akbar is a proof that a true ruler is the one who understands the knowledge, time and the movement of the planets. Where the boundaries of religion end, Rajdharma and Vivek begin from there, this was proved by Akbar.
