The Free Trade Agreement between India and the European Union, which is being called the Mother of All Deals from both sides, has not only made US President Donald Trump sweat, but India’s neighboring country Bangladesh is also surprised by this deal. And the reason for this is that with the implementation of this deal, India’s textile business will reach the heights where Bangladesh once dreamed of reaching. But this deal has not only broken that dream of Bangladesh but this deal has also written the story of destruction of Bangladesh, which Mohammad Yusuf could never even imagine.

The clothing market in the European Union is worth about $263 billion. The biggest stake in this is from China, which has 28 to 30 percent share in this market. Bangladesh is at second place, which has captured 21 to 22 percent of this entire market. The biggest reason for this is that Bangladesh has duty free access in the European Union, due to which its business is big. At third place is Turkey, which occupies about 10 to 12 percent of this entire market. Geographically, Turkey is close to Europe, so Turkey’s big brand clothes are consumed in the European Union. Vietnam also sells good quality clothes to the European Union. And that too absolutely duty free. So the people of European Union happily buy those clothes cheaply.

When it comes to India, till now India has been able to control only 5 to 6 percent of the market. If we talk in figures, then in Europe’s textile market which is worth 263 billion dollars, India is able to sell only about 8 billion dollars worth of clothes. The biggest reason for this was that the tax on the clothes sent from India to Europe was 9 percent to 12 percent. Still feeling it. But when this free trade agreement is implemented, the tax on Indian clothes will become zero. And then India will also join the list of exports like Bangladesh and Vietnam, whose clothes do not attract tax.

In the benefits enumerated by the Government of India regarding this trade deal, it has been clearly stated regarding the textiles industry that India sells clothes worth about 36.7 billion dollars i.e. about Rs 3.19 lakh crore in the whole world. Till now, India was able to sell clothes worth only 7.2 billion dollars i.e. about Rs. 62 thousand crores to the European Union, but after the trade deal, not only will India’s exports increase, but to meet this demand, more people will be needed in the textile business and this will also create new jobs and the dependence on the American market will also reduce, because till now it was America, which used to buy the most clothes from India. But now in the coming days, the European Union can replace America, which has troubled everyone because of its tariffs.

And as far as Bangladesh is concerned, its destruction is certain. Because till now Bangladesh is the second country after China, which produces clothes on a large scale and sells it to the world. It has got duty free access in the European Union, so that is its biggest market. Although Bangladesh has to depend on China for raw materials, India also supplies it with raw materials and makes similar clothes like t-shirts, lowers, jeans and basic garments. But now when India is also getting duty free access in the European Union, then this market of Bangladesh is sure to be affected, because one, India has diversity in textile manufacturing, it makes everything from sarees to designer clothes, second, India has no shortage of raw materials and especially cotton and the biggest thing is that there is political stability. In such a situation, the biggest challenge for Bangladesh, which is sometimes facing civil war-like situations and sometimes political instability, is to save its textile business, because after the trade deal, India is completely ready to take that place.

After this trade deal, India aims to sell double the amount of clothes to the European Union in the next five years. That means the business which is currently worth 7 billion dollars should become 15 billion dollars. When this happens, jobs will also come in India and the government believes that because of this, about 70 lakh people will get direct and indirect employment in the next few years. As of now, about five to five and a half crore people are involved in the textile business and the government aims to reach 10 crore people by 2030. It is expected that this trade deal will help a lot in achieving this goal.

Amid the violence that broke out after the death of a student leader in Bangladesh, protests and attacks against journalists have intensified in the country. Last week, Islamic fundamentalists set fire and vandalized the offices of two major newspapers of the country, in protest against which the journalists there protested fiercely on Monday (December 22, 2025).

Dozens of journalists and media personnel protested by forming a human chain in the country’s capital Dhaka. They were holding placards condemning attacks on press freedom and democratic values. Meanwhile, security forces were also deployed on the spot.

Violence broke out after the death of student leader

In fact, last Thursday (December 18, 2025) an angry mob attacked two offices in Dhaka. Many parts of the office building were set on fire and a lot of vandalism was also done in the office premises. These attacks took place amid anti-India sentiment that emerged after the death of Bangladesh’s popular student leader Sharif Usman Hadi.

Usman Hadi, 32, a staunch critic of India, was one of the leading faces of the pro-democracy movement that ousted Bangladesh’s then PM Sheikh Hasina from power last year. Earlier this month, Usman was shot by two masked gunmen while leaving a mosque in Dhaka. Hadi later died during treatment in a hospital in Singapore on Thursday (18 December).

Protestors set fire to many buildings in Dhaka

Protestors enraged by the killing of student leader Osman Hadi set fire to several buildings in the capital Dhaka, including the offices of two major newspapers, which are considered pro-India.

At the same time, Nurul Kabir, editor of New Age Daily and President of National Editors Council in Bangladesh, said that the attackers tried to burn the journalists alive. “When journalists were working inside the office, buildings were set on fire and even the fire department was prevented from carrying out rescue operations,” he said at a rally on Monday (December 22).

He said that the attackers had made it clear that anyone who disagreed with them would be burnt alive. He was even attacked while trying to help journalists trapped on the rooftop.

Accusations made against the government of Mohammad Yunus

Human rights organizations and media organizations in Bangladesh strongly criticized the uproar and violence and accused Mohammad Yunus and the government led by him of failing to control the situation. Media personnel claimed that this attack was carried out by people associated with the Yunus government.

The murmur about next year’s elections in Bangladesh has intensified. Ahead of the election season amid a growing political crisis, the National Citizen Party (NCP) accused both the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and the radical Islamist party Jamaat-e-Islami of indulging in an irrelevant debate on the implementation of the July Charter.

According to local media, the NCP also alleged that it had derailed the process and created uncertainty over the February 2026 elections. A leading Bangladeshi newspaper quoted NCP chief coordinator Naseeruddin Patwari as saying during an event in Dhaka on Thursday (October 30, 2025), ‘Whether the referendum will be held first or later, this is an absurd dispute between Jamaat-e-Islami and BNP. We (NCP) will not participate in this debate.

Addressing another seminar of NCP’s youth wing ‘Jatiyo Juboshokti’, Patwari said, ‘We have still not received any solution to the recommendations of the July Charter, we have not received any solution to the proposals, nor have we received any solution regarding the order.’

He also criticized the Jamaat for repeatedly raising the issue of referendum. The NCP leader asked, ‘If you are talking about the question of referendum or fixing the date before the elections, is the purpose of this to get more seats, or is there some other reason?’

The NCP leader stressed that if the referendum is held and the result is ‘yes’, it will be a victory for the people of Bangladesh and not for the Jamaat. He further said, ‘Therefore, we call upon Jamaat-e-Islami to stop this pretense.’

He accused Jamaat and BNP of working together to push the country towards uncertainty at a time of national crisis. He stressed, ‘We call on the Jamaat not to spread panic among the public regarding the referendum. Instead, we should focus on how we can find solutions regarding the process of disagreement, how orders can be issued.

Furthermore, the NCP leader commented that the BNP’s dissent letter through the Bangladesh National Consent Commission was actually a fraud. Amid growing political differences over the July Charter, the BNP recently accused the NCC of ‘betraying’ the people and political parties through its final recommendations on the July Charter. Along with this, he demanded immediate improvement in it by including the letters of disagreement.

On the other hand, the Jamaat demanded that the referendum on constitutional reforms mentioned in the July Charter be held before the elections, even if it means postponing the elections. Parties that had earlier collaborated with Yunus to oust the democratically elected government of Sheikh Hasina-led Awami League are now at loggerheads over reform proposals.

The political deadlock in Bangladesh seems to be deepening before next year’s elections. Radical Islamic party Jamaat-e-Islami said on Tuesday (October 28, 2025) that even if the Supreme Court’s decision restores the system of caretaker government, elections cannot be held under it.

According to local media, Jamaat’s lawyer Mohammad Shishir Monir made this comment after the hearing in the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court on an appeal demanding restoration of the system of caretaker government at the time of elections. This hearing continued for the fourth day on Tuesday.

Provision of caretaker government under SC decision

Bangladesh’s leading daily Jugantor quoted Monir as saying that there is talk of forming a caretaker government within 15 days of the dissolution of Parliament, now there is no Parliament. Parliament was dissolved more than a year ago and an interim government is running the country. Apart from this, there are some other issues, so even if the system of caretaker government is brought back under the decision of the Supreme Court, it is not possible in the upcoming elections.

Last week, on the third day of hearing on appeals and review petitions challenging the 2011 verdict, Jamaat’s counsel told the Supreme Court that the system cannot be effectively implemented under the current interim government as Parliament is inactive.

Call to work like ‘caretaker government’

He further said that whatever decision the Appellate Division makes, it should be in line with the proposals of the July Charter regarding the caretaker government system. Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), on the other hand, recently called on the Mohammad Yunus-led interim government to act as a ‘caretaker government’ to ensure that next year’s elections are held in a free, acceptable and fair manner.

It was said in a media briefing that at this time it is necessary to make the upcoming national parliamentary elections meaningful, fair and acceptable to all. The interim government can play the role of a caretaker government in this direction.

Rafiqul Islam Khan said, ‘If any advisor, secretary, election commissioner or police officer wants to work like a party man, he should resign. Everyone knows what happened to those in the administration who acted like puppets of the party. If a person holding a government post works for a political party, then people will not just sit idly by. The rally was organized as part of the fourth phase of the ongoing organized movement by the Jamaat and seven other Islamic parties on five-point demands, which include a November referendum on the July Charter and holding of the upcoming national elections under the proportional representation system.

Reiterating the demands, Rafiqul said, ‘If these demands are not met, the movement of the Jamaat will continue.’ On the other hand, amid growing tension between the Nationalist Party (NCP) over the demand for a public relations system, Jamaat General Secretary Ghulam Porwar advised NCP leaders to avoid competition with the Islamic party.

This comment of Ghulam Porwar has come after the statement of NCP convenor Nahid Islam. Nahid Islam had said in a statement on the social media platform that the demand for proportional representation movement started by the Jamaat is nothing but a well-planned political fraud.

Bangladesh’s Bengali newspaper Prothom Aalo quoted Porwar as saying, ‘AAP is a new student-led political organization. You still have a long way to go to compete with Jamaat-e-Islami. Don’t try to compete with your father immediately after birth. He said that he does not take NCP seriously.

The education system of Bangladesh is currently at the center of major controversy. The Mohammad Yunus administration has proposed the appointment of music and dance teachers in primary schools under the National Education Policy (NEP). Its purpose is to connect children with art, culture and creative education, but radical groups like Jamaat-e-Islami, Khilafat Majlis and Bangladesh Khilafat Movement have started opposing it.

These organizations say that learning music and dance at an early age will weaken religious education. This can make children an atheist and the next generation will lose faith in Islam. Religious and moral education in schools should compulsorily implement. If this policy continues, then the future of Bangladesh will be in danger. The Islamic Movement Amir Syed Rezaul Karim of Bangladesh said that music and dance will promote corruption and moral decline in children.

Direct attack on Yunus administration
Radical groups have warned the Yunus administration that if art teachers are appointed in primary schools, there will be protests on the road, until religious teachers are recruited, they will continue the movement. He claims that this step is against the principles of Islam and Quran.
