A 40-year-old Hindu woman was gang-raped by two men and then tied to a tree and her hair was chopped off in Kaliganj area of ​​Jhenaidah district of Bangladesh. The husband of the victim woman has already died. She lives with her child in Jhenaidah district of Bangladesh.

The victim was raped by the person from whom she bought the house.

The victim has lodged a complaint at Kaliganj Police Station. According to the complaint, the person from whom the victim had purchased 3 decimal land and a two-storey house in Nadipara for Rs 20 lakh two and a half years ago, along with one of his friends, raped her. The victim is a resident of Kaliganj upazila and had purchased the house from Shahin and his brother, residents of Nadipara. After this deal, Shahil started having bad intentions towards the victim woman and also started behaving obscenely.

The brutality of breaking into Padita’s house

According to the police complaint, on Saturday (January 3, 2026) evening, when two relatives from the widow’s village had come to meet her, Shahin and his companion Hasan forcefully entered the house and raped her. After this the accused demanded 50,000 Taka (about Rs 37,000) from the victim. When the woman refused to give the money, the accused attacked her relatives and chased them away.

After this the woman lodged a complaint against Shahin and Hasan at Kaliganj Police Station.

Bilal Hussain, Additional Superintendent of Police, Jhenaidah, said, ‘We called the victim to the police station and registered her complaint. After investigation, the police will take strictest legal action against the accused.

Violence against Hindus increased in Bangladesh

Khokan Chandra Das, a Hindu man, was attacked by a mob and set on fire in Shariatpur district of Bangladesh. Khokan Das managed to escape by jumping into the pond, but died of his injuries on Saturday. On the same day a woman was raped.

On 24 December 2025, another Hindu youth, Amrit Mandal, was beaten to death by a mob in Kalimohar Union of Bangladesh. The interim government in Bangladesh led by Mohammad Yunus condemned the murder, but claimed that Mandal was an extortionist and that there was no communal aspect to his murder. 25-year-old Dipu Chandra Das was also thrashed to death by the mob on December 18 after being falsely accused of blasphemy. His body was also hanged from a tree and set on fire.

There is already tension between India and Bangladesh regarding the killings and atrocities on Hindu community people in Bangladesh. Meanwhile, this controversy has increased further after the exclusion of Bangladesh cricketer Mustafizur Rahman from IPL team Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). Rizwana Hasan, advisor to the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting in the interim government of Bangladesh led by Mohammad Yunus, has expressed strong objection to this decision.

Apart from this, he threatened and said that our sentiments have been hurt by this decision and we will give a befitting reply to it. At the same time, Congress MP Shashi Tharoor has now given his reaction on the threat of Bangladesh government.

Cultural exchange and sports reduce political pressure – Hasan

Rizwana Hasan said, ‘Whenever there is a situation of political tension between two countries, it helps in reducing it through cultural exchange and sports, but what is happening here (with India) is exactly the opposite. Bangladesh cricketer Mustafizur Rahman has been dropped from the IPL team due to political reasons between the two countries. Our sentiments have been hurt by this. We will give a befitting reply to this. We cannot at all accept the reasons given for excluding Mustafizur from the team.

He further said, ‘After giving a place in the team, a Bangladeshi player has been shown the way out due to political reasons. This has naturally caused negative reactions among people. In this situation we will also have to take a stand. We are reviewing the legal basis and process for that stand. Necessary steps will be taken on this after complete verification.

The atrocities against Hindus in Bangladesh are not showing any signs of stopping. At present he is admitted in Shariatpur Sadar Hospital. This is the fourth attack on a Hindu in Bangladesh within two weeks. There has been an increase in violence against minorities, including Hindus, under the interim government led by Mohammad Yunus, which has angered people and many human rights organizations around the world.

India expressed concern over violence against minorities

Former Bangladesh PM Begum Khaleda Zia will contest the 13th National Parliament elections. At present his condition is bad and he is undergoing treatment in the hospital. Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has filed nomination papers on his behalf from Bogra-7 constituency.

Where will Khaleda Zia contest elections from?

Dhaka Tribune reported that the nomination paper for Bogra-7 seat was submitted by Bangladesh Nationalist Party President Khaleda Zia on Monday (29 December 2025). Party Chief’s advisor Helaluzzaman Talukdar Lalu filed nomination papers in the office of Deputy Commissioner and Returning Officer Taufiqur Rehman at around 3:00 pm.

Khaleda Zia, contesting from Bogra-7 seat, was represented by party leaders including Shahjahanpur Upazila BNP President Inamul Haq Shaheen and Gabtoli Upazila BNP General Secretary Inamul Haq Natoon.

Bogra-7 seat has special importance for BNP

Radical forces are a threat to the future of Bangladesh

Radical forces are establishing their roots across the country. These fundamentalist forces are emerging as a threat to the future elections of Bangladesh.

In the year 2024, when there was a violent movement against Sheikh Hasina in Bangladesh, she had to leave the country. Meanwhile, the students who were involved in this movement together formed a political party, National Citizen Party (NCP), but now when the elections are approaching, there is a strong discussion about the NCP party joining hands with the fundamentalist ideology Jamaat-e-Islami. Hurt by this decision, many NCP leaders are leaving the party and opposing this alliance.

A wave of resignations in NCP, a party formed out of student movement

The views of Jamaat and NCP are very different. The thinking of Jamaat is very different from the reforms announced by NCP during the student movement. At present, Naheed Islam is the convener of NCP, on whom most questions are being raised. In Bangladesh, Naheed is being accused of carrying forward the agenda of Jamaat-e-Islami. This is the reason why today NCP’s Mahfooz Alam has also announced to leave the party.

Party’s Joint Secretary Mir Irshadul has also announced his resignation. Till now, more than 30 leaders are leaving the party. Because of this, it is also being discussed that what was the real objective of the student movement that took place last year? Was the only objective of that movement to remove Sheikh Hasina from power? Did the leaders associated with NCP deceive the people of Bangladesh? These questions are circulating in the political atmosphere of Bangladesh.

However, seat sharing could also be a major reason behind NCP joining hands with Jamaat. If NCP had joined hands with Khaleda Zia’s party BNP, it would have got very less seats and with Jamaat, it could have contested more seats, for which NCP seems to be abandoning its issues.

BNP will be the biggest party in Bangladesh elections

Experts in Dhaka believe that BNP i.e. Bangladesh Nationalist Party can become the largest party in these elections. This party of former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia is considered the biggest political enemy of Sheikh Hasina. Khaleda Zia is currently ill and admitted in the hospital. Khaleda’s son Tariq Rahman has returned to Bangladesh after 17 years and is handling the party’s election campaign. This time in the general elections he himself is trying his luck from 2 seats.

On the other hand, Jamaat-e-Islami is also fielding its candidates in these elections. Sheikh Hasina had banned this party because Jamaat is considered a party that supports fundamentalism. This party is led by Shafiqur Rehman and was also a part of the coalition in the BNP government between 2001-06.

Overall, mainly only 3 parties are visible on a large scale in the electoral arena in Bangladesh. However, Bangladesh’s largest party, Awami League, is banned from participating in the electoral process. Awami League is Sheikh Hasina’s party and Sheikh Hasina had left the country after the coup, but big questions are being raised on the ban on Sheikh Hasina’s party Awami League in the electoral process of Bangladesh. Many international experts believe that without Awami League, the elections in Bangladesh are being considered fixed.

Mohammad Yunus silent on attacks on Hindus

At the same time, the challenge before Bangladesh is to conduct peaceful elections, because fundamentalist forces are targeting common Hindus in Bangladesh. Questions are also being raised on the silence of Mohammad Yunus. Recently, Mohammad Yunus has met the High Commissioner of Pakistan in Bangladesh, after which questions are being raised on the intentions of Yunus.

Along with the elections, referendum is also to be held in Bangladesh on 12th February, which means voting will take place twice in a day. Different colored ballot papers will be used for both of these. For parliamentary elections, black colored ballot paper will be used on white paper, whereas for referendum, colored ballot paper will be used. A total of 42,761 polling centers have been built in Bangladesh, in which there will be 2,44,739 booths.

Voting time has been kept from 7:30 am to 4:30 pm. 12,76,12,384 voters will cast their votes in the general elections to be held in the year 2026. Which includes approximately 6,47,60,382 male voters and 6,28,50,772 female voters. About 1,230 transgender voters are also included. After the voting is over, counting of votes will start.

The National Citizen Party (NCP), a political party formed by the leaders of the July Movement in Bangladesh, has joined hands with the Islamic party Jamaat-e-Islami for the general elections in the country to be held in February 2026 next year. This alliance was announced by Jamaat Aamir Shafiqur Rehman on Sunday (December 28, 2025).

According to the Dhaka Tribune report, Jamaat chief Shafiqur Rahman said that NCP and Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) have joined the currently eight-party alliance, after which this alliance has now become 10 parties. He said that he has spoken to NCP convenor Naheed Islam some time ago and the students’ party will make a formal announcement by Sunday (December 28, 2025) night.

Dissatisfaction within NCP over Jamaat’s alliance decision

However, dissatisfaction has also come to light within the NCP regarding the decision of alliance with Jamaat-e-Islami. Many leaders of the party led by Nahid Islam have started submitting their resignations in protest against this decision. According to the report, 30 leaders of the NCP Central Committee had written a letter to Nahid Islam on Saturday (December 27, 2025) opposing any electoral agreement with the Jamaat.

Many party leaders resigned in a week

The Daily Star in its report on Sunday (December 28, 2025) said that more than 170 leaders of the NCP Central Committee have supported the alliance with Jamaat-e-Islami. At the same time, just before the announcement by Jamaat chief Shafiqur Rehman, NCP joint convenor Tajnuwa Jabeen resigned from her post on Sunday afternoon (December 28, 2025).

According to the report, in the Facebook post, Jabeen expressed deep disappointment over the party’s policy-making process and its efforts for alliance with Jamaat-e-Islami. Earlier on Thursday (December 25, 2025), Mir Arshadul Haq, the main leader of the anti-Jamaat faction within the NCP, had also resigned. He was the Joint Member Secretary of NCP and Chief Co-ordinator of Chittagong City Unit. In the last one week, there has been a wave of resignations within the party.

The recent incidents of attacks on minorities in Bangladesh have shocked the entire world. Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) acting president Tariq Rahman on Thursday (December 25, 2025) appealed to the people to maintain peace. Presenting the vision of an inclusive society, he said that the country belongs to people of all religions, Muslims, Hindus, Buddhists and Christians.

Rehman said this while addressing party supporters for the first time after 17 years. Since the formation of the interim government in August last year, there have been many incidents against minorities, especially Hindus, in Bangladesh. Rahman told thousands of supporters after arriving on July 36 Expressway directly from Dhaka airport, ‘Now is the time for all of us to build the country together. This country belongs to the people of hills and plains, Muslims, Hindus, Buddhists and Christians. We want to create a safe Bangladesh, where every woman, man and child can go out of their home safely and come back safely.

The Hindu population in Bangladesh has faced several violent incidents after the ouster of then Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina from power in August last year. Recently, a 25-year-old Hindu laborer was beaten to death by a mob in Mymensingh city. India has expressed concern over attacks on minorities, especially Hindus, in Bangladesh. On Monday, minority groups protested in Dhaka and accused the interim government of failing to stop persecution of minorities. Earlier, Rahman returned to Dhaka on Thursday after living in self-exile for more than 17 years, where he was given a warm welcome.

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and other party leaders welcomed Rahman at Hazrat Shahjalal Airport in Dhaka amid tight security. Rehman was also accompanied by his wife Zubaida Rehman and daughter Jaima Rehman. Rehman was living in London since 2008. He has been effectively leading the BNP since 2018 after the ill health of former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia. BNP has emerged as a major contender to gain power in the elections to be held in February, as former Prime Minister Hasina’s party Awami League has been banned from taking part in the elections.

Jamaat-e-Islami, which was an ally of the BNP during its tenure from 2001 to 2006, is now considered its main rival, as the interim government has banned the Awami League from contesting elections through an executive order under the country’s stringent anti-terrorism law.

Rehman’s return has come at a time when unrest has spread in the country after the assassination of prominent youth leader Sharif Usman Hadi, which has engulfed the entire Bangladesh. Hadi played an important role in ousting Hasina from power. Rahman, a leading contender to become the country’s next Prime Minister, symbolically marked his return to the country’s politics by standing barefoot on Bangladeshi soil soon after arriving at Shahjalal Airport.

Hours later, Rehman, 60, son of former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, addressed his supporters and called for maintaining peace and stability in the country and presented a comprehensive plan to create an ‘inclusive Bangladesh’. Referring to American civil rights activist Martin Luther King’s famous quote ‘I have a dream’, Rahman said, ‘I have a plan for my countrymen and my country.’ Rahman said that he wants to create an inclusive Bangladesh, where people of every caste, creed and religion can live in a peaceful environment.

When the BNP had announced Rahman’s plan to return from London, Rahman had said, ‘Just as a child wants to be near his seriously ill mother in her time of distress, I want to return to Bangladesh.’ Rahman’s return to Dhaka has come at a time when Bangladesh-India relations are deteriorating rapidly. However, he did not make any direct mention of India in his address.

The BNP leader left the airport in a bulletproof bus. Before leaving the airport, Rehman thanked interim government head Muhammad Yunus in a phone conversation. Yunus had supported the arrangements made for their security and the organization of programs related to their return home.

In a video message shared by BNP, Rehman was seen saying, ‘On behalf of myself and my family, I express my gratitude to you. In particular, I express my gratitude for the steps taken for my safety. Rahman also mentioned the establishment of Bangladesh in 1971.

Referring to the fall of the Hasina-led government last year, he said, ‘Just as in 1971, people from all sections of society came together to protect the independence and sovereignty of this country, similarly in 2024 too people united and ousted the Sheikh Hasina government from power.’ About 4,000 soldiers, paramilitary Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) personnel, policemen equipped with riot control equipment and plainclothes policemen were deployed in Dhaka to ensure Rehman’s security.
