A Bangladesh court on Monday sentenced ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to five years in jail and her niece and British MP Tulip Siddiq to two years in jail in a land scam case. According to the news of state-run BSS news agency, Judge Mohammad Rabiul Alam of Dhaka Special Judge’s Court-4 also sentenced Hasina’s sister Sheikh Rehana to seven years in jail in the same case. A case was registered against 17 people in this corruption case.

The court pronounced this verdict in a packed courtroom in the absence of the three accused. Each of the remaining 14 accused was jailed for five years. The court also imposed a fine of Tk 1 lakh each on all the 17 convicts, including Haseena, Rehana and Siddiq, and in default of payment of the fine, they will have to undergo additional jail term of six months.

She is the daughter of Britain’s Bangladeshi Labor Party leader Siddiq Rehana and has been MP from Hampstead and Highgate since 2015. In April, the interim government had issued an arrest warrant for 43-year-old Siddiq as part of its investigation into corruption during Hasina’s tenure as prime minister.

He was found guilty of influencing his aunt Haseena to acquire land on the outskirts of Dhaka in the name of his mother, brother and sister. However, he has vehemently denied these allegations. According to the news of ‘The Daily Star’ newspaper, this is the fourth decision related to 78-year-old Hasina in the cases filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).

On January 13, ACC had registered a case of land scam against 15 people including Hasina, Rehana and Siddiq. These people were accused of illegally obtaining the allotment of the plot during the tenure of the former Prime Minister. The investigating officer later filed a charge sheet against 17 accused on March 10.

The ACC had filed six separate cases at its Dhaka Unified District Office-1 between January 12 and 14 over alleged irregularities in the allotment of land under the ‘Purbachal New Town’ project, ‘The Dhaka Tribune’ newspaper reported.

According to the ACC, Hasina, in collusion with Rajuk officials, illegally acquired six plots of land, each measuring 10 katha (7,200 sq ft) in size, for herself and several relatives, including her son Sajeeb Wajid Joy and daughter Saima Wajid Putul, even though they were not eligible under existing rules.

ACC officials said Siddiq used his position to get plots in the names of Rehana, Bobby and Azmeena. Rajdhani Unnayan Kartripakkha (RAJUK) is the government agency responsible for monitoring the regulations from planning to construction of government buildings in Bangladesh.

In this case, on July 31, charges were framed against 29 people, including Haseena, Rehana, Joy, Putul and Tulip. Hasina was sentenced on November 27 to 21 years of rigorous imprisonment, which includes seven years in each of the three cases filed in the Purbachal land scam case. Joy and Putul were co-accused in separate cases and were sentenced to five years in each case.

According to a report by ‘BBC’ (British Broadcasting Corporation), Siddiq lives in London and has rejected the allegations against him. Britain has no extradition treaty with Bangladesh. It is classified as a ‘2B’ country, which means that clear evidence must be presented to lawyers and judges to approve any extradition.

Hasina has been living in India since the massive protests in Bangladesh on August 5 last year. Due to the protests, he had to leave power and his Awami League government fell. He was declared a fugitive by a court.

Hasina was sentenced to death in absentia by a special tribunal last month on charges of “crimes against humanity” over her government’s brutal crackdown on student protests last year. The ousted Prime Minister says the allegations against him are “full of bias and politically motivated”.

Former Bangladesh minister and Awami League leader Mohammad Ali Arafat has criticized the interim government led by Mohammad Yunus on Thursday (October 23, 2025). He accused the Yunus government of violating human rights and said that the rule of law has collapsed in the country.

Arafat said in a post on social media platform

He said the perpetrators of these attacks have been given freedom or provided compensation, meaning no legal cases can be filed against the killers or those destroying state property and the victims will never be able to demand justice.

People violating human rights are roaming freely – Arafat

Awami League leader Arafat alleged that those who carried out the killings in broad daylight using weapons and sticks had gone unpunished. He said, ‘Under the unconstitutional and illegitimate rule of Yunus who violates human rights, there is no rule of law in Bangladesh. Only extremists rule.

He claimed that cases have been registered against police and military personnel, who were performing their duties to protect life and property from arson and killings, and they will be prosecuted. Many of them have been arrested on fabricated charges of enforced disappearances and murders.

from bangladesh ICT Gave orders regarding 15 military officers

Bangladesh’s International Criminal Tribunal (ICT) on Wednesday (October 22, 2025) ordered the jailing of 15 military officers in three separate cases of alleged forced disappearances, killings and other crimes against humanity during the Awami League government, local media reported. Earlier, on 11 October, Bangladesh Army Headquarters had announced that 15 officers had been taken into military custody after being formally charged in three cases in ICT.

Sheikh Hasina criticized the arrest of military officers

Last week, former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina strongly criticized the arrest of army officers, saying there was no rule of law in Bangladesh under the Yunus-led interim government. Addressing a virtual meeting with party leaders in Nagaon, he asked, ‘I am surprised as to how the Army can be expected to hand over these officers to the law. Where is the law? There is no rule of law in this country. This government is illegitimate and all its actions are illegal. Why should these officers be handed over to such a government?

Uncertainty and political turmoil are increasing in Bangladesh ahead of next year’s elections. Bangladesh’s radical Islamic party Jamaat-e-Islami has warned interim government chief Mohammad Yunus that if any member of his government works for any political party, people will take to the streets. The party said that everyone knows what happened to those who acted like puppets of the party.

The parties that had earlier worked with Yunus to oust the democratically elected government of Sheikh Hasina-led Awami League are now at loggerheads over reform proposals.

According to the report of Bangladeshi newspaper The Daily Star, on Monday (October 20, 2025), a rally of the party was held at the North Gate of Baitul Mukarram National Mosque in Dhaka, which was addressed by Jamaat’s Assistant General Secretary Rafiqul Islam Khan.

Rafiqul Islam Khan said, ‘If any advisor, secretary, election commissioner or police officer wants to work like a party man, he should resign. Everyone knows what happened to those in the administration who acted like puppets of the party. If a person holding a government post works for a political party, then people will not just sit idly by. The rally was organized as part of the fourth phase of the ongoing organized movement by the Jamaat and seven other Islamic parties on five-point demands, which include a November referendum on the July Charter and holding of the upcoming national elections under the proportional representation system.

Reiterating the demands, Rafiqul said, ‘If these demands are not met, the movement of the Jamaat will continue.’ On the other hand, amid growing tension between the Nationalist Party (NCP) over the demand for a public relations system, Jamaat General Secretary Ghulam Porwar advised NCP leaders to avoid competition with the Islamic party.

This comment of Ghulam Porwar has come after the statement of NCP convenor Nahid Islam. Nahid Islam had said in a statement on the social media platform that the demand for proportional representation movement started by the Jamaat is nothing but a well-planned political fraud.

Bangladesh’s Bengali newspaper Prothom Aalo quoted Porwar as saying, ‘AAP is a new student-led political organization. You still have a long way to go to compete with Jamaat-e-Islami. Don’t try to compete with your father immediately after birth. He said that he does not take NCP seriously.

Bangladesh Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus will meet Pakistan Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif during his visit to New York on 22 September. The two leaders are going to New York to attend the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) session, both will meet here other than the UNGA.

According to the report by Bangladesh’s leading Bengali daily newspaper Jugantor, Muhammad Yunus along with three major political party Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), radical Islami Party Jamaat-e-Islami and four senior leaders of the National Citizens Party (NCP) will also join the UNGA session.

After the coup in Bangladesh last year, closeness between Islamabad and Dhaka has started increasing. Addressing a press conference at the Foreign Service Academy in Dhaka, Bangladesh’s Foreign Affairs advisor Tauheed Hussain announced that the Muhammad Yunus will address the session on 26 September.

According to the IANS report, local media quoted Tauheed Hussain as saying that Muhammad Yunus will also hold a meeting with the Prime Minister of Pakistan, the President of Finland, the Prime Minister of Finland, the Prime Minister of Finland, the Netherlands Prime Minister, the United Nations Secretary -General and the General Secretary for Myanmar during the UNGA session.

Sheikh Hasina’s relationship between Dhaka and Islamabad under 15 years of rule of 15 years of War crime cases and widespread regional politics in Bangladesh was tense. Bangladesh-Pakistan relations have always included Pakistan’s role in the massacre during the 1971 liberation struggle, the return of trapped resources and compensation. However, the situation has changed a lot since the formation of the interim government led by Muhammag Younus in August 2024.

Last month, Pakistan Deputy PM and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar made a two-day official visit to Dhaka, which was the first state-level visit of any Pakistani officer to Bangladesh in 13 years. During this meeting, Ishaq Dar claimed that the long -standing issue over the 1971 massacre has been resolved twice before. However, his claim was immediately denied by Dhaka.

After a meeting with Foreign Affairs advisor Tauheed Hussain, Dar claimed that according to the leading Bangladeshi Media Outlets, Prothom Alo, three unresolved issues between Islamabad and Dhaka, including a long -standing demand to apologize for the 1971 massacre, have been resolved twice before. However, dismissing the claims of the Pakistani Foreign Minister, Hussain told reporters, ‘I don’t agree at all. If we had agreed, the problem would have been resolved. Last year, Younus met Pakistani Prime Minister Sharif during the United Nations General Assembly, where the two leaders agreed to strengthen bilateral relations.

Public protest protest against the Mohammad Yunus government in Bangladesh is also going on on Friday (August 1, 2025). Traffic is severely disrupted due to the protest demonstration in the country’s capital Dhaka and the general public is facing a lot of trouble.

According to local media reports, the dharna demonstration started from Thursday morning and the protesters are continuously raising slogans like ‘July will not take away’ and ‘July Charter Dena’. The protesters demand that the ‘July Charter’ be implemented immediately. The protesters say that their sit -in demonstration will continue till their demands are met.

The traffic came to a standstill due to the accumulation of hundreds of protesters at the Shahabag intersection. A local person said, ‘I went to Jatrabari in the morning by official work. Then the information about Shahabag blockade was found from social media, so I started going from bus to Basabo, Kamalapur and Malibagh, but there was jam everywhere on the streets. It took two and a half hours to reach Karwan Bazaar, which is usually a journey of one and a half hours.

The second round of dialogue was concluded on Thursday by the National Consent Commission of Bangladesh (NCC). Most political parties agreed to the seven reform proposals, including the appointment of the Chief Government Chief, the formation of the High House and the President’s election. However, Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and its colleagues objected to six of these proposals.

After the conclusion of the dialogue, NCC Vice President Ali Riyaz said, ‘Our goal was to meet the dialogue by 31 July, which we have achieved. Now we will prepare the final draft of the July Charter and share it with political parties.

Many parties like Jamaat-e-Islami, National Citizen Party (NCP) and Islamic Movement have expressed objections on the draft ‘July Charter’. The provision of the charter has been specially opposed, which states that reforms will be implemented within two years of formation of the government. These parties demand that the charter be legalized so that its implementation can be ensured.
