Metro connectivity is essential for the development of any city. This project will have a positive impact on the lives of the people of Mumbai.” This is Mumbai’s first and completely underground metro line, which is 33.5 kilometers long and includes 27 stations. Every day about 13 lakh people will travel by this metro.

Modi also launched the Mumbai One app, which offers a number of benefits to commuters, including integrated mobile ticketing for multiple public transport operators. He also inaugurated the Short-Term Employability Skills Program (STEP) initiative of the Department of Skills, Employment, Entrepreneurship and Innovation in Maharashtra.

This program is being launched in 400 government ITIs and 150 government technical high schools, which is a major step towards aligning skill development with industry requirements to enhance employability.

People’s time will be saved: PM Modi

Starting his address in Marathi, PM Modi said that Mumbai’s long wait is over. He said, “Mumbai got a second big airport and underground metro. This will make travel easier and people will save time.”

Travel will be easy for people

Work on this project started in 2017 under Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MMRCL). Under this, for the first time in India, 17 Tunnel Boring Machines (TBM) were deployed simultaneously. The Aqua Line will connect with Central Railway at CSMT and Mumbai Central and Western Railway at Churchgate, which will improve intermodal travel.

The line improves access to Nariman Point, Fort, Kalbadevi, RBI, BSE and Mantralaya, making travel easier for professionals working in key business and administrative areas of the city.

How much will the fare be?

This line will provide direct metro access from South Mumbai to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport, which will be a big relief for air travelers. Passengers traveling up to 3 km will have to pay a fare of Rs 10. Those traveling a distance between 3 km to 12 km will have to pay a fare of Rs 20.

The fare has been fixed at Rs 30 for those traveling between 12 km to 18 km, Rs 40 for those traveling between 18 to 24 km, Rs 50 for those traveling between 24 km to 30 km and Rs 60 for those traveling between 30 km to 36 km.

Not only this, the rail service was also stalled due to water filling on the track between Bhaikhala and Masjid Bandar station on the central line. The central rail has come to a standstill due to the water filling between the sand horst road and the fraternity. The local service of up and down side has stopped. The services of the Harbor Line have also started slow due to rain. At the same time, local trains of Western Railway are also seeing a delay of up to 5 minutes.

Accidents due to rain fall due to rain

Not only the local train, but also inside the newly constructed underground metro of Mumbai, Aqua line was flooded. In which the rain water can be seen going inside the station and going on the platform. There have also been accidents of tree fall due to strong winds and rain. BMC received information about falling of trees at 4 places in Mumbai Town and 5 places in Western Subfers. Local train service is affected here.

Mumbai metro aqua line: The second phase of the much awaited underground Aqua Line (Line-3) of Mumbai Metro began on 9 May. This metro has now opened for travelers from Aare JVLR to Acharya Atre Chowk of Varli. However, a few days after the start of the metro, the network problem has increased the problem of passengers.

The mobile network suddenly disappeared on the metro route late on Wednesday, causing a lot of problems to the passengers. Messages like ‘No Network’, ‘Call Feld’ and ‘No Service’ are still visible on the phone inside the metro.

The services of major telecom companies like Vodafone-Idea, Airtel and Jio are completely disrupted in the underground section. Some people believe that this problem is temporary due to recent expansion, while others are connecting it with the ongoing tussle between Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MMRCL) and telecom companies.

Passengers’ difficulties increased

Many passengers said that as soon as they enter underground stations, the mobile network completely stops and returns the network only when it exits the station. Due to this, there are problems in digital ticketing. Passengers are now forced to take a screenshot of QR code or are resorting to offline ticketing. Notices have now been imposed at metro stations, in which passengers are already advised to take tickets.

Know what is the real reason for controversy?

There is a controversy over providing telecom network in the underground part of the Aqua line. The Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI) says that Vodafone, Jio and Airtel jointly offered to install in-beding solution (IBS) for free, but MMRCL refused to give them the right of way. MMRCL says that they are implementing a neutral telecom infrastructure via public tender, as has been done in other major metro and airports in the country.

What did MMRCL say?

In a statement issued by MMRCL, to ensure mobile connectivity inside underground stations to passengers, Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MMRCL) appointed a neutral infrastructure provider through an open tender process in March 2024. Selected sellers, Aces, have the required licenses to install neutral infrastructure and already installed equipment according to the requirements of telecom companies to facilitate mobile coverage at 16 current metro line 3 stations.

However, on 13 May 2025, VI and Airtel suddenly shut down their services from all the current stations of Metro Line 3 without any prior notice, which completely stalled mobile connectivity to the passengers. Only the service of Jio is operational at the Seepz station, as it has installed his equipment only there.

VI was the first telecom company to install active equipment there in October 2024 with the operation of Rich 1. After this, he also started services at six stations of Rich 2A, which started in May 2025. Airtel also provided connectivity at Rich 1 stations, but it has not yet installed equipment at Rich 2A stations. This sudden steps taken by telecom companies have caused heavy inconvenience to thousands of daily travelers and are obstructing the smooth operation of metro services.
