There is news of great relief for lakhs of property taxpayers falling under the jurisdiction of Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD). Mayor Sardar Raja Iqbal Singh has appealed to take maximum benefit of the property tax settlement scheme ‘Sunio’ for the year 2025–26. Under this scheme, an opportunity is being given to get complete relief from old outstanding taxes, interest and penalties.

What is Sunio Scheme and who will get the benefit?

The Mayor said that under the Sunio scheme, the entire interest and penalty on property tax for the period before the financial year 2020–21 is being waived. For this, taxpayers will have to deposit the basic tax amount only for the current financial year 2025–26 and the preceding five financial years i.e. from 2020–21 to 2024–25. There will be no interest or penalty on this amount.

Opportunity to avail benefits till 31 January 2026

Keeping in mind the convenience of the taxpayers, Delhi Municipal Corporation has extended the deadline of Sunio Scheme till January 31, 2026. However, if payment is made after the stipulated period, a late fee of 5 percent will be applicable. The corporation believes that with this more and more people will be able to take advantage of this scheme.

Mayor’s direct appeal to taxpayers

Mayor Sardar Raja Iqbal Singh said that this is a golden opportunity for property owners. He appealed to all the taxpayers to settle their old dues without any interest and penalty and cooperate with the corporation.

Effect of Sunio scheme visible in tax collection

The Mayor said that citizens are participating enthusiastically in this scheme. Till December 31, 2025, a total of 1,66,587 taxpayers have availed the benefit of Sunio scheme. A total property tax of Rs 803.61 crore has been collected from these taxpayers. According to the data, tax of Rs 188.28 crore has been collected from 1,20,157 residential properties. At the same time, property tax of Rs 615.32 crore has come into the corporation’s account from 46,430 non-residential properties. It is clear from this that participation of commercial properties has also been very important.

Big increase in the number of first time tax payers

The Mayor said that 90,139 new taxpayers have paid property tax for the first time by taking advantage of the Sunio scheme. Tax collection of Rs 312.45 crore has been done from these new taxpayers, which shows the success of the scheme.

Record increase in total tax collection

In the current financial year, including Sunio scheme, a total property tax collection of Rs 2,642.80 crore has been done till 31 December 2025. This amount has been received from 12,42,875 taxpayers. In the same period last year, tax collection of Rs 1,859.77 crore was made from 10,31,177 taxpayers. In this way, a significant increase of 42.1 percent has been recorded in tax collection and 20.52 percent in the number of taxpayers.

Better performance than last year

It is noteworthy that the total property tax collection in the entire financial year 2024–25 was Rs 2,132.29 crore, which was received from 11,33,161 taxpayers. Whereas the collection so far in the current financial year has far exceeded this figure.

Appeal to settle taxes on time

The Mayor appealed to all property tax payers to settle their outstanding property tax within the extended time limit of Sunio Scheme and take full advantage of this relief opportunity.

Sources in the organizing committee said that this was the fifth dog attack during this championship. Earlier, dogs, volunteers and stadium officials had attacked the dogs, but the case was suppressed. This time the incidents became public due to the involvement of foreign coaches. Cleaning and increasing concern of organizers

The WPAC organizing committee issued a statement saying that the root of this problem is among those who feed stray dogs near the stadium. The committee said that on 21 August 2025, a letter was written to the MCD requesting the removal of dogs and the campus was also evacuated before the championship started. Despite this, they returned again by people feeding dogs continuously. According to the Times of India, now the stadium and the surrounding areas have been re -confined and security has been increased.

Recently, the case of stray dogs is in discussion and now such attacks are once again making this problem more serious. According to government data, in 2024, 37.17 lakh dog byte cases were registered across the country, ie an average of 10,000 cases on an average. At the same time, the report of the World Health Organization (WHO) states that in 2022, 305 people died of rabies in India.

Politics is intensified to keep the meat shops closed or open on the Kandar Yatra route in Delhi. Meanwhile, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) said on Thursday (July 10) that there is no provision to close meat shops on the Kawad Yatra routes under the DMC Act, 1957. This statement came a day after the statement of Culture and Tourism Minister Kapil Mishra, in which he said that meat shops will be closed on the Kavad Yatra route.

The annual Kandar Yatra begins in the month of Sawan. It will start on Friday (July 11) and end on 25 July. In a written reply to a question at the MCD House, the Civil Body said that there is no provision to close meat shops on the routes of Kavad Yatra under the Municipal Corporation of Municipal Corporation Act, 1957. However, in the last few years it has been observed that the owners of these establishments voluntarily close their shops during the annual pilgrimage.

Campaign against illegal animal slaughter and open meat sales

During the monthly proceedings of the House, in a written reply, it was said that the regional offices of MCD have been directed to run a special campaign against illegal animal slaughter and sale of meat in the open to ensure that someone’s religious sentiments are not hurt. It also states that the municipal officials have been asked to ensure that meat shops should also be covered on the Kavad Yatra routes.

Delhi Mayor Raja Iqbal Singh reiterated the legal status of the civil body. He said, “We will request the owners of the meat shop to close our shops voluntarily, respecting the religious sentiments related to the Kandar Yatra. Those with no legitimate license will not be allowed to work. We are only requesting those who are legal. It is about mutual respect between communities. Twenty five kavad camps have been set up at various places. ”

The MCD further said that it has deployed 22 doctors to work in regular shifts in these camps, with 10 on-coal medical professionals. Additional 62 assistant employees have been appointed. Apart from this, the officers have been instructed to be vigilant and keep the roads clean and waterlogging free. Water tankers and suction machines have been deployed at major places.

What did the member of the Meat Shop Association say?

Meanwhile, a member of the Meat Shop Association said that the government should not connect the business with festivals. Vivek Kumar, who runs chicken and meat shops, said, “We respect all religions and emotions, but it is not a single day event. Many families are completely dependent on such businesses, what will they do in such a situation?”

Officials have banned the sale of meat near pavements, streets or camps during the journey. The MCD stressed that strict action will be taken against those who violate unlicensed shops or rules.
